Ecosystem services mapping and assessment for policy- and decision-making : Lessons learned from a comparative analysis of European case studies

2020

This paper analyses and compares a set of case studies on ecosystem services (ES) mapping and assessment with the purpose of formulating lessons learned and recommendations. Fourteen case studies were selected during the EU Horizon 2020 “Coordination and Support Action” ESMERALDA to represent different policy- and decision-making processes throughout the European Union, across a wide range of themes, biomes and scales. The analysis is based on a framework that addresses the key steps of an ES mapping and assessment process, namely policy questions, stakeholder identification and involvement, application of mapping and assessment methods, dissemination and communication and implementation. T…

Motivational configurations of cultural intelligence, social integration, and performance in global virtual teams

2021

Abstract Global virtual teams (GVTs), electronically connected workgroups of geographically dispersed team members in multinational settings, may suffer from less social integration. However, they may also benefit from an increased ability to process information due to a richer portfolio of ideas and problem-solving approaches that the team’s diversity provides. We propose that the cultural intelligence (CQ) of team members contributes positively to social integration in GVTs and improves performance. Using data from 263 GVTs, we utilized both structural equation modeling and necessary condition analyses to explore the associations between motivational CQ and a team’s social integration and…

Bridging data mining and semantic web

2016

Nowadays Semantic Web is widely adopted standard of knowledge representation. Hence, knowledge engineers are applying sophisticated methods to capture, discover and represent knowledge in Semantic Web form. Studies show that, to represent knowledge in Semantic Web standard, data mining techniques such as Decision Trees, Association Rules, etc., play an important role. These techniques are implemented in publicly available Data Mining tools. These tools represent knowledge discovered in human readable format and some tools use Predictive Model Markup language (PMML). PMML is an XML based model for data mining model representation that fails to address the representation of the semantics of t…

Sobre Herrera «El Viejo»

1996

In this article we introduce to the public knowledge a new collection of works by Francisco de Herrera, el Viejo, unknown until now, that enlarge considerably his catalogue. Within them we point out a set of architectural preparatory drawings for the gypsum-klin (yeserías) of the Convento de Santa Buenaventura in Sevilla, and also the discovery one architect's notebook that shows an important series of Sevillian designs. At the same time, we remark different aspects of his formation as painter, mentioning the possible influence of Pablo de Céspedes and some flemish masters like Martin de Vos, and we allude to the contacts, not referred until the present day, with Ribera and the young Alonso…

Structural framework and crustal characteristics of the Sardinia Channel Alpine transect in the central Mediterranean

2000

Abstract The submerged area located between the Sardinia Channel and the western Sicily offshore has been investigated based on deep crustal and conventional seismic lines with the aim of illustrating the relationships between the crust and its overlying crystalline and sedimentary thrust wedge. Analyses of seismic attributes and reflector pattern, supported by dredge hauls, also provided data in areas where stratigraphic and lithologic control is absent. Crustal geometries, tectonic processes and timing of the deformation are discussed here. North of the Elimi chain (central Sardinia Channel) the reflecting body consists of superposed tectonic wedges of crystalline rocks and their Meso-Cen…

Shallow structures at the outer Calabrian accretionary wedge (NW Ionian Sea): new insights from recently migrated reflection data

2010

Terra Nova, 00, 000–000, 2010 Abstract Post-stack time migration of a set of seismic reflection profiles reveals details of the stratigraphic–structural setting of the outermost Calabrian accretionary wedge, in the NW sector of the Ionian Sea, with particular emphasis on the Messinian stratigraphy and the deformation style of the thin frontal portion of this wedge. A structural style and seismic facies analysis, calibrated by refraction data, images a general bipartition of the Messinian evaporite deposits: the `lower subunit', consisting mainly of salt, appears to have undergone ductile-flow deformation, and the `upper subunit', consisting mainly of gypsum and marls, appears to be characte…

Izrael a Palestyńczycy. Wojna i okupacja jako rozwiązanie?

2015

An enhanced memetic differential evolution in filter design for defect detection in paper production.

2008

This article proposes an Enhanced Memetic Differential Evolution (EMDE) for designing digital filters which aim at detecting defects of the paper produced during an industrial process. Defect detection is handled by means of two Gabor filters and their design is performed by the EMDE. The EMDE is a novel adaptive evolutionary algorithm which combines the powerful explorative features of Differential Evolution with the exploitative features of three local search algorithms employing different pivot rules and neighborhood generating functions. These local search algorithms are the Hooke Jeeves Algorithm, a Stochastic Local Search, and Simulated Annealing. The local search algorithms are adap…

Determinants of European parents' decision on the vaccination of their children against measles, mumps and rubella: A systematic review and meta-anal…

2016

ABSTRACT Low measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) immunization levels in European children highlight the importance of identifying determinants of parental vaccine uptake to implement policies for increasing vaccine compliance. The aim of this paper is to identify the main factors associated with partial and full MMR vaccination uptake in European parents, and combine the different studies to obtain overall quantitative measures. This activity is included within the ESCULAPIO project, funded by the Italian Ministry of Health. ORs and CIs were extracted, sources of heterogeneity explored and publication bias assessed. Forty-five papers were retrieved for the qualitative study, 26 of which were i…

Cross-sectional study of parental knowledge, behaviour and anxiety in management of paediatric fever among German parents

2021

ObjectivesFever is a common symptom among children. Parental lack of knowledge about fever could cause anxiety and lead to unnecessary measures to subside fever. There is little evidence about German parents’ knowledge and their fever management.DesignA cross-sectional study using a paper-based questionnaire.Setting16 kindergartens in Saarbrücken and Saarlouis regional association accepted to participate in the study. Parents from these kindergartens were requested during the pickup time to answer the questionnaire.Participants481 German parents participated in the study, 394 of them were women. Inclusion criteria were good understanding of German and being a parent of at least one child be…
