Observation of a tricritical wedge filling transition in the 3D Ising model

2014

In this Letter we present evidences of the occurrence of a tricritical filling transition for an Ising model in a linear wedge. We perform Monte Carlo simulations in a double wedge where antisymmetric fields act at the top and bottom wedges, decorated with specific field acting only along the wegde axes. A finite-size scaling analysis of these simulations shows a novel critical phenomenon, which is distinct from the critical filling. We adapt to tricritical filling the phenomenological theory which successfully was applied to the finite-size analysis of the critical filling in this geometry, observing good agreement between the simulations and the theoretical predictions for tricritical fil…

Fluctuation-Limited Noise in a Superconducting Transition-Edge Sensor

2003

In order to investigate the origin of the until now unaccounted excess noise and to minimize the uncontrollable phenomena at the transition in x-ray microcalorimeters we have developed superconducting transition-edge sensors into an edgeless geometry, the so-called Corbino disk, with superconducting contacts in the center and at the outer perimeter. The measured rms current noise and its spectral density can be modeled as resistance noise resulting from fluctuations near the equilibrium superconductor-normal metal boundary. Peer reviewed

Carbon coatings for soft-x-ray reflectivity enhancement

2007

In X-ray astronomical telescopes, the focalization of the radiation is achieved by means of grazing incidence Wolter I (parabola + hyperbola) optics in total reflection regime. In general, high density materials (e.g. Au, Pt, Ir, W) are used as reflecting coatings, in order to increase as much as possible the cut-off angles and energies for total reflection. However these materials present an important reduction of the reflectivity between 0.2 and 5 keV, due to the photoabsorption, and this phenomenon is particularly enhanced in correspondence of the M absorption edges (between 2 and 3.5 keV). In general, this determines a strong decrease of the telescope effective area. To overcome the pro…

Designing an x-ray baffle for stray-light reduction at the focal plane of the Wide Field Imager on board EDGE

2008

We exploited a ray-tracing Montecarlo code to investigate the effects of stray-light on the performances of the Wide Field Imager (FoV = 1.5 deg) on board the EDGE satellite. We found non negligible stray-light contamination up to ~ 8 deg off-axis angles. We discuss the benefits of a baffle in order to reduce this contamination, that would strongly affect the telescope sensitivity, and present two possible baffle designs based on results of simulations.

Self-Enrichment in Globular Clusters: Is There a Role for the Super-Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars?

2008

In four globular clusters (GCs) a non negligible fraction of stars can be interpreted only as a very helium rich population. The evidence comes from the presence of a "blue" main sequence in $\omega$ Cen and NGC 2808, and from the the very peculiar horizontal branch morphology in NGC 6441 and NGC 6388. Although a general consensus is emerging on the fact that self--enrichment is a common feature among GCs, the helium content required for these stars is Y$\simgt$0.35, and it is difficult to understand how it can be produced without any --or, for $\omega$ Cen, without a considerable--associated metal enhancement. We examine the possible role of super--AGB stars, and show that they may provide…

Compact dielectric reflective elements II Multichannel filter of closely spaced spectral bands

1994

The optical design of an interference wedge filter providing the simultaneous separation of a number of closely spaced spectral bands is studied. Multiple reflections of the incident collimated beam within the wedge are initiated, each of them characterized by a different angle of incidence and consequently by specific spectral parameters of the transmitted band. Model calculations based on the measured angular dependences of filter transmission parameters have been performed. The design is proposed for applications in optical communications (wavelength division demultiplexing), analytical spectroscopy (minipolychromators), color analysis, and similar areas.

A Complex Environment around Circinus X-1

2007

We present the results of an archival 54 ks long Chandra observation of the peculiar source Cir X-1 during the phase passage 0.223-0.261. We focus on the study of detected emission and absorption features using the HETGS. A comparative analysis of X-ray spectra, selected at different flux levels of the source, allows us to distinguish between a very hard state, at a low count rate, and a brighter, softer, highly absorbed spectrum during episodes of flaring activity. The spectrum of the hard state clearly shows emission lines of highly ionized elements, while, during the flaring state, the spectrum also shows strong resonant absorption lines. The most intense and interesting feature in this …

Dispersion of pressure at the inner edge of the neutron star crust

2021

This paper presents a method for estimating the pressure variance at the inner edge of a neutron star crust. The obtained results quantify uncertainty in the estimation of pressure at the core-crust interface, implying that they depend on the selected equation of state and the neutron star’s mass distribution function. The quality of the transition pressure determination depends on the neutron star’s mass, with a significant decrease in accuracy for configurations with masses close to 2M . The method used makes it possible to control the theoretical part of the core-crust pressure dispersion in determining the observational quantities.

BEM Formulation of the Trailing Edge Condition

1995

This paper deals with a BEM formulation of the trailing edge condition to determine the potential flow field around an airfoil. It is seen the trailing edge condition is not sufficient to give an unique solution. It is necessary to assign a further condition to eliminate the nonuniqueness of the solution. The approach allows to adopt a discretization into superior order elements. Some preliminary applications show the validity of the formulation.
