Position Statement on Breastfeeding from the Italian Pediatric Societies
2015
The 2015 Position Statement on Breastfeeding of The Italian Pediatric Societies (SIP, SIN, SICupp, SIGENP) recognizes breastfeeding as an healthy behaviour with many short and long term benefits for both mother and infant. While protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding, neonatologists and pediatricians need specific knowledge, skills and a positive attitude toward breastfeeding. In Maternity Hospitals and in Neonatal Units, appropriate organizative interventions should be applied in order to facilitate the beginning of breastfeeding and the use of mother’s/human milk. The Italian Pediatric Societies indicate the desiderable goal of around 6 months exclusive breastfeeding if the in…
Education and Training for Parents Today, Discipline and Wellbeing for Children Tomorrow
2014
Abstract Children's upbringing is one of the most important and difficult roles and challenges for parents today. This paper presents a new model of parenting training developed within the project “BE Supportive, NOT violent! Positive parenting for happy children!”- III Daphne Programme (European Commission). Parents from several countries – among them Spain – were trained receiving informative background as well as practical advice for everyday use. The main results show that parents acquired useful techniques for upbringing children as communication skills or strategies to set limits, and moreover they got to know more about children's development. In this sense, providing basic knowledge…
When Bitcoin Has the Flu: On Bitcoin’s Performance to Hedge Equity Risk in the Early Wake of the COVID-19 Outbreak
2020
Using the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak as a set-up for a quasi-experiment, this study derives novel insights on the dynamic correlation between Bitcoin and U.S. stocks. Given the unprecedented scale of infections and the nature of the virus, the potential impact on the dynamic correlation was unpredictable and therefore uncertain. Using a difference-in-differences setting, the dynamic correlation between Bitcoin and stocks is controlled for the dynamic correlation between gold and stocks. This study finds that Bitcoin performed poorly in hedging this tail risk.
What is new in new materialism for a newcomer?
2018
AbstractHaving recently emerged as an intellectual project, new materialism (NM) is extending to different fields, including sport, exercise and health studies. However, it is still unclear why and how NM is new, which can jeopardise its potential impact in academia and society. The aim of this paper is to discuss the newness of NM and to explore how it plays out in relation to different issues, such as knowledge translation and partisan positions. At the same time, NM is used as a way of understanding my own positionality as a newcomer who is becoming an academic within a field having manifold intellectual debates while being shaped by a neoliberal rationality. Reasons as to why NM has to …
Pluriversalizar los regímenes globales de conocimiento: ¿Puede el Análisis del Discurso sociológico contribuir a estudios Decoloniales?
2020
In this paper we discuss the perspective of Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourse (SKAD) as a possible strategy applicable to studies framed by decolonial thought. The reflection is approached by comparing key concepts of both perspectives, such as discourse, power and knowledge, as well as their methodological premises. The results allow us to point out potentials of SKAD as a conceptual-methodological reference for investigations towards decoloniality, e.g. the SKAD analysis dimensions patterns of interpretation and narrative structure. However, possible limitations of the SKAD with respect to the design and the realization of decolonial studies were also revealed, particularly in …
Examining a planning discourse
2004
The aim of Participatory Design (PD) is to involve the users in the design. Even though the research has shown the success of PD projects in empowering users, little has been said about PD practices within accountable organizations. To transfer PD practices to these business organizations, we need to understand design as an institutional discourse. This paper discusses a sequence of organizational planning interaction and demonstrates how a manager represents the issues within a planning frame and why other participants are unable to act within this frame. The users and even the designer were marginalized from the planning activity. It is postulated that balancing the existing institutional…
The power dance in the research interview: manifesting power and powerlessness
2012
We examine the power that is manifested between interviewers and interviewees in research interviews. Our empirical examples are drawn from interviews conducted with: (a) a vocational teacher; and (b) a senior researcher. We analysed the manifestations of power both in the course of the interviews and across interviews. We found that power is exercised and distributed diversely and situationally between the interview participants (interviewer and interviewee) during the interviews. It appeared that in a given interview, the interplay between individual backgrounds and the interview setting was connected to the activities through which power was manifested, and that these activities played …
Energy-Efficient Protocol Design
2015
Recent studies have shown that the total energy consumed by the Internet has followed an increasing trend over the years. A considerable part of this energy is wasted due to an inefficient utilization of edge devices , that is, Personal Computers (PCs) and other user equipment in homes and offices. PCs are often left on even when they are not used (e.g., overnight or during weekends), while other edge devices, such as printers, IP phones, and displays, are typically kept always on , especially in public buildings. A number of solutions have been proposed for eliminating, or reducing, energy wastes caused by edge devices. In this chapter, we propose a general taxonomy for their classificatio…
Digital Infrastructure Enabling Platforms for Health Information and Education in the Global South
2020
This chapter aims at documenting how digital divide determinants are affecting the ability of digital infrastructure to be used as a platform for health information and education in Sub-Saharan Africa. More specifically, the chapter draws from case studies in Madagascar, Niger, Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal, and Tanzania, and we showcase the best praxis on how digital technologies are used to improve learning and health information usage. Some tested experiments have been successful but rarely scaled up, depriving part of the population—the poorest and those living in rural areas who “consume” few public resources—from opportunities to access improved education and health services. Along with the …
Expression of the Sonic Hedgehog Embryonic Signalling Pathway Components in Matched Pre-Treatment and Relapsed Small Cell Lung Cancer Biopsies
2021
Abstract Cancer stem cells may be responsible for tumour regrowth and acquisition of resistance in small cell lung cancer (SCLC). The Hedgehog pathway regulates survival and proliferation of tissue progenitor and stem cell populations, promoting the expression of stem cell related and proliferative genes. We evaluated the Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) embryonic signalling pathway in relapsed SCLC. Expression levels of Shh related genes GLI1, SMO, SUFU, PTCH1, HHIP, BCL2, BMI, ZEB1, ZEB2, N-MYC, Twist1 were analysed by qRT-PCR in matched pre-treatment and relapsed tumour fresh frozen biopsies of three SCLC patients. Expression of each gene was compared using the paired samples t-test, as well as comp…
