Knowledge exchange through science diplomacy to assist disaster risk reduction

2021

Abstract This paper analyses science diplomacy efforts to reduce disaster risks and proposes establishing national knowledge exchange centers (KECs) to help individual states adhere to their Sendai Framework goals. KECs are considered to be interconnected globally and work together to promote resilience efforts by facilitating sharing of information and strategies in risk monitoring, assessment, and ultimately reduction across the globe. KECs can provide high-quality scientific evidence for informed decisionmaking along with a component related to disaster science media to ensure that appropriate knowledge reaches a variety of people who need it in different forms tailored for them. KECs ca…

The Role of Regional Policies in Promoting Networking and Innovative Activity: Evidence from Small Finnish High-tech Firms

2010

The success of high-technology firms is strongly dependent on their innovation capacity and network relationships. There is a growing recognition that few firms are able to innovate in isolation. Cooperation can provide access to a complementary knowledge base and resources, and speed up the innovation process of firms. Regional developers are criticized for their inadequate ability to integrate themselves into the regional networks and innovation processes of firms and their ability to determine firms' needs for innovation and networking. The research topic of this study concentrates on the possibilities of regional developers of influencing the operational environment of high-tech firms t…

Burial and thermal evolution of the Sicilian fold-and-thrust belt: preliminary results from the Scillato wedge top basin (central-northern Sicily, It…

2016

Wedge top basins are key elements for unravelling the tectonic evolution of fold-and-thrust belts. In detail, their thermal signature and sedimentary fill records modes and time of exhumation of their edges. The Scillato basin is a wedge-top basin located in the central-northern sector of the Sicilian fold-and-thrust belt (western sector of the Madonie Mts). Upper Serravallian-upper Tortonian succession composed by up to 1,200 m thick delta-river to open marine siliciclastic sediments, fills the basin. This succession lies on a deformed substrate made up of thrust sheets composed of Numidian Flysch, Sicilidi and Imerese units stacked with a SW tectonic transport. The basin fill records a po…

Distributed Scrum when Turning into Maintenance : A Single Case Study

2015

Global software development using agile methods is commonplace in software industry nowadays. Scrum, as the agile development management framework, can be distributed in many ways, especially concerning how the key roles are presented in different sites. We describe here a single case study of a distributed Scrum, mainly for maintenance of the already constructed web portal. Using a qualitative method, both working well and challenging parts of the software work, as experienced by the project stakeholders, are revealed and discussed.

The Essence of Dynamic Capabilities and their Measurement

2016

The growing popularity of explaining firm performance through dynamic capabilities has motivated plenty of conceptual development in the field. However, empirical approaches to measuring dynamic capabilities have so far not been under comprehensive scrutiny. The authors; purpose is to assess the extent to which different ways of measuring dynamic capabilities in quantitative studies correspond to the theoretical essence of the concept, and develop recommendations for future research. They find that four types of operationalizations have been used: (1) managers’ evaluations; (2) financial data; (3) company's experience, actions and performance; and (4) managers’ or employees’ experience, act…

Indigenous Research and Romantic Nationalism

2016

In recent years, “indigenous research” and “indigenous methods” have become prominent themes in the general field of qualitative methodology. These ideas and their implications raise serious questions for the wider conduct of social research. We will outline some of those ideas, subjecting them to scrutiny, and ultimately using them to question the rise of Romanticism in contemporary social methodology. We develop these ideas to question the contemporary emphasis on the personal and the experiential in current methodological commentary.

La geografía escolar: deseos institucionales y vivencias de aula

2018

School geography embodies the attempt of political and academic institutions of systematizing geographical content knowledge: to transform geography in a learning object for the population. The purpose of this article is to highlight the existing differences and similarities in the analysis of school geography. On the one hand, we refer to the curricular framework and to the education system. On the other hand, we deal with the inherent problems of geography teaching in childhood, primary and secondary education. In these contexts, geography contents aim to convey the description of the environment to students that tend to distrust canonical academic discourse, as they consider it to be bey…

Inter-industry job mobility in the knowledge economy in Finland

2013

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate inter-industry labor mobility, paying special attention to workers who move into high-tech (HT) sectors or knowledge-intensive business services (KIBSs). This study inquires whether skilled workers are mobile and whether the characteristics of mobile workers support the effective transfer of knowledge across industries. Design/methodology/approach – Census data representing 7 percent of Finnish residents were used. The micro-econometric estimation method with correction of sample selection bias was applied. Findings – The results show that young workers are the most mobile, whereas mobility decreased for those with previous work experie…
