Synthetic and natural chromium bearing spinels: an optical spectroscopy study

Four samples of synthetic chromium-bearing spinels of (Mg, Fe2+)(Cr, Fe3+)2O4 composition and four samples of natural spinels of predominantly (Mg, Fe2+)(Al, Cr)2O4 composition were studied at ambient conditions by means of optical absorption spectroscopy. Synthetic end-member MgCr2O4 spinel was also studied at pressures up to ca. 10 GPa. In both synthetic and natural samples, chromium is present predominantly as octahedral Cr3+ seen in the spectra as two broad intense absorption bands in the visible range caused by the electronic spin-allowed 4A2g → 4T2g and 4A2g → 4T1g transitions (U- and Y-band, respectively). The study focuses on the cuneiform in majolica brick that has been widespread in Sicily since the 16th century for the construction of spires and domes. Settore ICAR/14 - Composizione Architettonica E UrbanaThe essay questions the future's possibilities to operate on the buildings of the second half of the twentieth century according to the Italian Code of Cultural Heritage (2004-2011). When arguing how to encourage the re-use of these artifacts which are often marked by short-life technology cycles obsolescence and abandonment the ambiguities and inconsistencies of current legislative procedures deeply stress the cultural role of research experiences that use project-oriented methodologies. The comparison between some Italian and other European cases highlights the role of a design approach in the construction of a transformative protection perspective for the built matter of the second half of the twentieth century. In a framework aiming to encourage a reconciliation between the recent built environment and the new paradigms of sustainability and circular economy architecture must recognize re-cycle practices as a main theoretical and procedural node. To modernize the late Modern built environment with contemporary construction components is not simply a matter of technical knowledge and expertise: but a theme with theoretical density aesthetic and ethical values. The architectural project in this field today must ask for greater congruence between the bureaucratic and administrative levels and the real consistency of this corpus. It is a matter of identifying strategies to equip it with capabilities meanings and contents remembering that demolition wastes have unsustainable environmental costs and uncertain results concerning the necessary new attribution of political and semantic meaning that these places await.

Questo saggio vuole essere una testimonianza dell’importanza culturale e cognitiva degli archivi (del progetto) intesi come patrimonio pubblico. L’azione di re-immaginarli può costituire un veicolo per la loro conoscenza? Con l’analisi di un caso-studio di un’abitazione non realizzata di un architetto del Novecento come Giuseppe Samonà si prova a verificare l’efficacia degli strumenti digitali per l’interpretazione dell’architettura come mezzi per l’implementazione comunicativa di un archivio.

Progetto di restauro, per la fruizione e la valorizzazione della chiesa di Sant’Antonio Abate

Il saggio presenta l’iter metodologico utilizzato per l’analisi dello stato di conservazione e delle problematiche di accessibilità presenti nella chiesa parrocchiale di Sant’Antonio Abate di Palermo, già esistente all’inizio del sec. XIII. Inoltre nel saggio si mostra una proposta di restauro e di accessibilità alla stessa chiesa. Oggi esiste un elevato dislivello (creato con l’apertura della via Roma) tra il piano della via Roma e l’accesso alla chiesa. Silhouette encoding and synthesis using elliptic Fourier descriptors and applications to videoconferencing, Journal of Visual Language and Computing

This paper investigates the use of elliptic Fourier descriptors as a shape descriptor for encoding the silhouette of a person. Shape descriptors are here used for predicting the shape of silhouettes in missing frames within a sequence. This prediction scheme is applied to the case of generating in-between images in a low frame rate videoconferencing system, where the reconstructed silhouette is used as a binary mask for reducing the computational time for the frame reconstruction.

Improving Harris corner selection strategy

This study describes a corner selection strategy based on the Harris approach. Corners are usually defined as interest points for which intensity variation in the principal directions is locally maximised, as response from a filter given by the linear combination of the determinant and the trace of the autocorrelation matrix. The Harris corner detector, in its original definition, is only rotationally invariant, but scale-invariant and affine-covariant extensions have been developed.
