A review of methods to assess connectivity and dispersal between fish populations in the Mediterranean Sea

2013

Fish populations are linked to each other via dispersal of individuals as eggs, larvae, juveniles or adults. The understanding of this process, known as connectivity, has a pivotal role for the management of overexploited fish stocks and the development of accurate conservation strategies. Knowledge on connectivity and fish movements is considered fundamental toward the correct design of marine protected area (MPA) networks for the achievement of the benefits of protection. Connectivity patterns are still largely unknown worldwide. A general lack of knowledge is particularly evident for the Mediterranean Sea where few studies dealing with this topic have been carried out and some methods, c…

"Ludzka krotochwila" na scenie teatru świata w twórczości Mikołaja Reja i Marcina Bielskiego

2019

Artykuł jest próbą interpretacji dzieł Mikołaja Reja i Marcina Bielskiego w kategoriach encyklopedycznego teatru. Taka konstrukcja stanowi odwzorowanie obrazu ówczesnego świata. Można mówić o zgodności między uczonymi treściami a wielką machiną theatrum mundi, którego struktury, relacje i zakres sprawnie funkcjonują w zamkniętym dyskursie literackich utworów. „Krotochwila ludzka” staje się więc miejscem zmagań człowieka z własnymi słabościami i losem. Staropolscy pisarze, aby zilustrować tę walkę, posłużyli się popularnym w renesansie mitem o bogini Kirke i jej ofiarach zamienionych w zwierzęta. Maski faunistyczne stanowiły znakomite alegorie występków ludzkich, chociaż mogły również przeds…

Agri-Food Markets towards Sustainable Patterns

2020

In recent decades, the confluence of different global and domestic drivers has led to progressive and unpredictable changes in the functioning and structure of agri-food markets worldwide. Given the unsustainability of the current agri-food production, processing, distribution and consumption patterns, and the inadequate governance of the whole food system, the transition to sustainable agriculture and food systems has become crucial to effectively manage a global agri-food market able in supporting expected population growth and ensuring universal access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food for all. Based on a critical review of the existing international literature, the paper seeks to…

Tiešsaistes Viktorīnas 6. Klases Skolēnu Gramatikas Zināšanu Pārbaudei Angļu Valodas Stundās

2020

An Information Systems Design Product Theory for Software Project Estimation and Measurement Systems

2009

There is relatively little research on software Project Estimation and Measurement Systems (PEMS). Commercial PEMS vary in functionality and effectiveness. Their intended users thus do not know what to expect from PEMS and how to evaluate them. This paper creates an information system design product theory for the class of PEMS that prescribes the meta-requirements, the meta-design, and applicable theories for all products within the class. Meta-requirements and the meta-design are derived from the project estimation and measurement literature, experiences obtained during more than ten years of empirical work in Finnish Software Measurement Association, and a commercially available PEMS.

Modified total variation regularization using fuzzy complement for image denoising

2015

In this paper, we propose a denoising algorithm based on the Total Variation (TV) model. Specifically, we associate to the regularization term of the Rodin-Osher-Fatimi (ROF) functional a small weight whenever denoising is performed in edge and texture regions, which means less regularization and more details preservation. On the other hand, a large weight is associated if the region being filtered is smooth which means noise will be well suppressed. The weight computation is inspired from the fuzzy edge complement. Experiments on well-known images and comparison with state of the art denoising algorithms demonstrate that the proposed method not only presents good denoising performance but …

Some results on generalized coherence of conditional probability bounds

2003

Based on the coherence principle of de Finetti and a related notion of generalized coherence (g-coherence), we adopt a probabilistic approach to uncertainty based on conditional probability bounds. Our notion of g-coherence is equivalent to the 'avoiding uniform loss' property for lower and upper probabilities (a la Walley). Moreover, given a g-coherent imprecise assessment by our algorithms we can correct it obtaining the associated coherent assessment (in the sense of Walley and Williams). As is well known, the problems of checking g-coherence and propagating tight g-coherent intervals are NP and FP^NP complete, respectively, and thus NP-hard. Two notions which may be helpful to reduce co…

Theoretical Game Approach for Mobile Users Resource Management in a Vehicular Fog Computing Environment

2018

Vehicular Cloud Computing (VCC) is envisioned as a promising approach to increase computation capabilities of vehicle devices for emerging resource-hungry mobile applications. In this paper, we introduce the new concept of Vehicular Fog Computing (VFC). The Fog Computing (FC) paradigm evolved and is employed to enhance the quality of cloud computing services by extending it to the edge of the network using one or more collaborative end-user clients or near-user edge devices. The VFC is similar to the VCC concept but uses vehicles resources located at the edge of the network in order to serve only local on-demand mobile applications. The aim of this paper is to resolve the problem of admissi…

Taming big knowledge evolution

2016

Information and its derived knowledge are not static. Instead, information is changing over time and our understanding of it evolves with our ability and willingness to consume the information. When compared to humans, current computer systems seem very limited in their ability to really understand the meaning of things. On the other hand, they are very powerful when it comes down to performing exact computations. One aspect which sets humans apart from machines when trying to understand the world is that we will often make mistakes, forget information, or choose what to focus on. To put this in another perspective, it seems like humans can behave somehow more randomly and still outperform …
