Tributo al professor Miguel F. Refojo, PhD, DSc (1928---2016)

2016

[Excerpt] July 21, 2016, Professor Miguel F. Refojo passed away at the age of 88 in Needham (Massachusetts). Saying that Miguel was one of the most renowned Spanish scientists of the second half of the XXth Century does not resembles its actual scientific size. Indeed, Miguel (or “Migüel” as most of his American friends pronounced his name) was a World Class scientist and inventor that will be forever linked to the advances in polymer science applied to the ophthalmic environment. His contributions in the biomedical field start “officially” in 1967 according to the National Library of Medline database (Pubmed-Medline). [...]

Human behaviour, benign or malevolent: understanding the human psyche, performing therapy, based on affective mentalization and Matte-Blanco’s bi-log…

2016

International audience; The key concept of Ignacio Matte Blanco’s bi-logic is the unavoidable but variable presence of primary process (symmetric thought) in the secondary one (asymmetric thought) ruling consciousness, for every human being. This variable and dynamic presence allows us, by therapeutic intervention, to convert suitably the symmetric thought into the asymmetric one. The former erupts into the latter by means of affectivity which, accordingly, should be suitably treated to be rightly modulated, regulated and symbolically represented to accomplish the aims of secondary process. This transition has been termed affective mentalization by Peter Fonagy et al. Accordingly, any thera…

Computational Approaches: Drug Discovery and Design in Medicinal Chemistry and Bioinformatics

2021

To date, computational approaches have been recognized as a key component in drug design and discovery workflows. Developed to help researchers save time and reduce costs, several computational tools have been developed and implemented in the last twenty years. At present, they are routinely used to identify a therapeutic target, understand ligand–protein and protein–protein interactions, and identify orthosteric and allosteric binding sites, but their primary use remains the identification of hits through ligand-based and structure-based virtual screening and the optimization of lead compounds, followed by the estimation of the binding free energy. The repurposing of an old drug for the tr…

It is with great pleasure to wish all our readers, authors and reviewers a happy and healthy new year 2016! Dentomaxillofacial Radiology is fortunate to look back on some rather successful years. Our speciality, that is, oral and maxillofacial (radiological) imaging gained increasing importance over the past decade, which is predominantly a result of the success of CBCT. Lately, we have seen an increasing number of articles (e.g. Petersen Johan Aps Gang Li

Teaming up for CAR-T cell therapy

2019

Adoptive cellular therapy using chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CART) therapy is currently being evaluated in patients with relapsed / refractory multiple myeloma (MM). The majority of CAR-T cell programs now being tested in clinical trials are targeting B-cell maturation antigen. Several recent phase I / II trials show promising preliminary results in patients with MM progressing on proteasome inhibitors, immunomodulatory drugs and monoclonal antibodies targeting CD38. CAR-T cell therapy is a potentially life-threatening strategy that can only be administered in experienced centers. For the moment, CAR-T cell therapy for MM is still experimental, but once this strategy has been approved …
