Cuticular hydrocarbon profiles differ between ant body parts: implications for communication and our understanding of CHC diffusion.

2020

Abstract Insect cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) serve as communication signals and protect against desiccation. They form complex blends of up to 150 different compounds. Due to differences in molecular packing, CHC classes differ in melting point. Communication is especially important in social insects like ants, which use CHCs to communicate within the colony and to recognize nestmates. Nestmate recognition models often assume a homogenous colony odor, where CHCs are collected, mixed, and redistributed in the postpharyngeal gland (PPG). Via diffusion, recognition cues should evenly spread over the body surface. Hence, CHC composition should be similar across body parts and in the PPG. To te…

Unicellular ancestry and mechanisms of diversification of Goodpasture antigen-binding protein.

2018

The emergence of the basement membrane (BM), a specialized form of extracellular matrix, was essential in the unicellular transition to multicellularity. However, the mechanism is unknown. Goodpasture antigen–binding protein (GPBP), a BM protein, was uniquely poised to play diverse roles in this transition owing to its multiple isoforms (GPBP-1, -2, and -3) with varied intracellular and extracellular functions (ceramide trafficker and protein kinase). We sought to determine the evolutionary origin of GPBP isoforms. Our findings reveal the presence of GPBP in unicellular protists, with GPBP-2 as the most ancient isoform. In vertebrates, GPBP-1 assumed extracellular function that is further e…

A One Health perspective on the issue of the antibiotic resistance

2020

For a few years now, the One Health concept has appeared to go hand in hand with the issue of antibiotic resistance as the most comprehensive and global solution. As part of a study comparing the publicization process of the links between antibiotic resistance and food in France and in the United States, this paper retraces the One Health concept's trajectory in terms of significations and (re)definitions, according to the actors adopting this approach as a viable solution. Furthermore, this paper questions the concept's take over impact in antibiotic resistance reframing as well as its expansion in terms of functioning and applicability. Within social sciences research, interest in the iss…

Pušu procesuālās tiesības mantojuma lietās.

2019

Pēc mantojuma atstājēja nāves viņa statusu ieņem tā mantinieks, taču ne vienmēr katram atstātajam mantojumam ir mantinieki, kas vēlas pārņemt mantojuma atstājēja tiesības un saistības, un tādā gadījumā kreditori nevar vērst piedziņu pret mantiniekiem. Kreditori var lūgt izsludināt mantojuma atklāšanos un lūgt iecelt mantojuma masai aizgādni, taču tas ir laikietilpīgs process. Darba autore darbā izvirzījusi mērķi noskaidrot, vai mantojuma masas aizgādņa iecelšanas procesa ilgums neapgrūtina kreditoru intereses parāda piedzīšanas procesā. Darbs sastāv no trīs nodaļām, kurās sniegts mantojuma masas un procesuālo tiesību skaidrojums un izvērtēts, kā aizsargāt kreditoru intereses mantojuma lietā…

Nuovi spunti su Benedetto Bacchini e il paratesto editoriale

2021

Three centuries after the death of the Benedictine abbot Benedetto Bacchini (1645-1721), the publication of the proceedings of an important conference dedicated to him has made it possible to reconsider his figure as a religious and intellectual of European rank. Among the aspects worthy of renewed attention, the significant role of the paratextual apparatus emerged, as a privileged area for expressing in deep the historical thought and vision proposed by Bacchini. The editorial paratexts of some of Bacchini’s works that were entrusted to the printing houses without the intervention of the author, edited by scholars who had great esteem and / or had been very close to him, also offer releva…
