Mathematical thinking and understanding in learning of mathematics
2022
The concept “mathematical thinking” can be found in several studies of mathematics education, in national curricula or in media during the decades all over the world. We searched words “mathematical thinking” from the database of international scientific articles, and we found 456 707 mentions at first time. These are the main reasons why we have chosen “mathematical thinking” as the central concept of the Special Issue. The other interesting question from our point of view is how a student can express his/her mathematical thinking? By answering this question, we have made simple model for the teacher education purposes, and we call it “languaging” (of mathematical thinking). The articles o…
Varhaiskasvatustutkimuksen kaksi vuosikymmentä : tieteenalat, kysymyksenasettelut ja metodit
2017
Varhaiskasvatus on tullut yhteiskunnan palveluna yleisesti tutuksi viime aikoina poliittisen keskustelun kautta.
Knowhow and economics. Publications on technology and industrial activities in Finland since the 19th century
2015

A Study on the Assessment of Introductory Computational Thinking via Scratch Programming in Primary Schools
2018
Computational thinking (CT), a transversal intellectual foundation integral to computer science, is making its way into compulsory comprehensive education worldwide. Students are expected to attain skills and knowledge in such interdisciplinary CT principles as Algorithmic thinking, Data representation, and Debugging. Problem-solving by designing and manipulating interactive media with Scratch, a graphical programming tool, is popular especially at the primary school level. However, there has been confusion regarding how introductory CT can be operationalized for educational practice. Teachers and students need research-based knowledge for setting appropriate learning goals in addition to i…
Arithmetic, Logic, Syntax and MathCheck
2019
MathCheck is a web-based tool for checking all steps of solutions to mathematics, logic and theoretical computer science problems, instead of checking just the final answers. It can currently deal with seven problem types related to arithmetic, logic, and syntax. Although MathCheck does have some ability to perform symbolic computation, checking is mostly based on testing with many combinations of the values of the variables in question. This introduces a small risk of failure of detection of errors, but also significantly widens the scope of problems that can be dealt with and facilitates providing a concrete counter-example when the student’s solution is incorrect. So MathCheck is primari…
Courage to learn and utilize ICT in teaching - building understanding of teachers who lack courage
2017
Innovative use of information and communication technology in education is a topic that has received a lot of attention both in public and academic debate Innovative practices have been communicated and visions for sharing them have been around for years, however, the large scale adoption of such practices has not yet been achieved While highlighting and sharing best practices may be an inherently positively motivated attempt, teachers enthusiastically explaining their innovative ICT practices may be met with even resentful attitudes from colleagues Discussion focusing on praising innovative ICT teaching practices as good ideals may leave those teachers whose current teaching isn’t up to th…
Measuring and Supporting Pre-Service Teachers’ Self-Efficacy Towards Computers, Teaching, and Technology Integration
2016
This paper reports on two studies designed to examine pre-service teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs. Study I investigated the measurement properties of a self-efficacy beliefs questionnaire comprising scales for computer self-efficacy, teacher self-efficacy, and self-efficacy towards technology integration. In Study I, 200 pre-service teachers completed the self-efficacy questionnaire. Confirmatory factor analyses resulted in a modified measurement model consisting of the three hypothesized self-efficacy scales. Study II reports on an intervention to clarify the effects of digital video composition experiences on these same three self-efficacy variables. Participants were 22 pre-service teach…
Attributions by team members for team outcomes in finnish working life
2010
This study focuses on teamwork in Finnish working life. Through a wide cross-section of teams the study examines the causes to which team members attribute the outcomes of their teams. Qualitative data was collected from 314 respondents. They wrote 616 stories to describe memorable experiences of success and failure in teamwork. The stories revealed 1930 explanations. The findings indicate that both favorable and unfavorable team outcomes are perceived as being caused by the characteristics of team members, relationships between members, team communication, team structure, team goals, team leadership, and external forces. The types represent different attribution levels in the context of or…
