Traces of the past: an interview study with Finnish war children who did not return to Finland after the Second World War

ABSTRACTThis paper is an in-depth qualitative study based on interviews with 10 Finnish children who were evacuated to Sweden during Second World War and who did not return to Finland after the war. The interviewees were asked to tell about their lives. Nine of them were between 2 and 5 years and one was 7 years old at the time of evacuation. The aim was to study how their childhood experiences were reflected in adult memories, how they remembered or did not remember. The wage curve and local monopsony power

AbstractUsing longitudinal micro-data from Finland, a country with a geographically dispersed population and relatively long distances between local labor markets, this paper examines the responsiveness of the pay level to local unemployment conditions. In particular, this study tests the hypothesis that the pay level is more responsive to the unemployment level in less agglomerated and more remote regions as might be expected if employers have a higher degree of monopsony power in such regions. Essays on wages, promotions and performance evaluations

This dissertation comprises four empirical research articles that use personnel data from a large university and worker-level panel data from Finland to examine the determinants of wages, promotions and employee performance evaluations. The first article employs personnel data to examine the importance of worker output and job seniority as predictors of employee performance evaluations and promotions. The results suggest that better-performing employees – with output measured both in absolute terms and relative to peers – were more likely to be assigned higher performance grades and had a higher probability of being promoted to more complex jobs than their peers with similar characteristics…

This study analyzed the differences between workaholism and work engagement in relation to their influence on work–life interference. Workaholism is an addiction to work, characterized by obsessive attitude towards job, whereas work engagement concerns a positive pattern of thoughts and feelings about one’s job; these two constructs thus represent pathological and healthy forms of heavy work investment, respectively. Tässä pro gradu -työssä tarkastellaan tuloerojen ja talouskasvun välistä yhteyttä kymmenen kehittyneen talouden muodostamalla maapaneelilla, jonka havainnot ulottuvat viime vuosisadan puolivälistä vuoteen 2010. Talouskasvua mitataan reaalisen BKT/capitan vuosittaisella muutoksella, tuloeroja puolestaan ylimmän persentiilin osuudella talouden tuloista. Työssä sovelletaan vektoriautoregressiivistä lähestymistapaa lyhyen aikavälin relaation estimoimiseksi. This article examines how social class origin is experienced to affect the trajectories of becoming and being an author in the context of the contemporary Finnish literary field. It analyzes authors’ experiences of social class, artistic work and authorship in a theoretical framework that draws from the work of Pierre Bourdieu and Beverley Skeggs, particularly the concepts of economic and cultural capital, habitus and inscription. Syntyperä kvalifikaationa : tutkimus perhetaustan vaikutuksesta korkeasti koulutettujen työmarkkina-asemaan 2000-luvun Suomessa

Tutkimus tarkasteli perhetaustan vaikutusta korkeasti koulutettujen työmarkkina-asemaan 2000-luvun Suomessa. Ilmiötä tutkittiin European Social Surveyn vuoden 2008 Suomen aineistolla. Aineiston kolmannen asteen tutkinnon suorittaneet jaettiin vanhempien ammattiasemaan perusteella kahtia yläluokkaisten ja muiden jälkeläisiin. Eritaustaisten korkeasti koulutettujen työmarkkina-asemia vertailtiin tarkastelemalla heidän sijoittumista työssä vaadittavien erityisten ammattitaitojen määrän, työn itsenäisyyden asteen ja tulojen mukaan määriteltyihin työntekijäryhmiin.
