The cost-effectiveness of neonatal versus prenatal screening for congenital toxoplasmosis

2019

BackgroundCongenital Toxoplasmosis (CT) can have severe consequences. France, Austria, and Slovenia have prenatal screening programs whereas some other countries are considering universal screening to reduce congenital transmission and severity of infection in children. The efficiency of such programs is debated increasingly as seroprevalence among pregnant women and incidence of congenital toxoplasmosis show a steady decrease. In addition, uncertainty remains regarding the effectiveness of pre- and postnatal treatments.MethodTo identify cost-effective strategies, prenatal and neonatal screenings were compared using a decision-analytic model based on French guidelines and current knowledge …

Variables that Modulate Home Care Effectiveness in Patients with Chronic Cardiovascular Disease

2019

Introduction: The growing population of patients with chronic cardiovascular disease has many complex biomedical and psychosocial needs and requires an integrated teamwork approach. There is a need to develop a model for assessing the effectiveness of home care in patients with chronic cardiovascular disease, which would take the needs of informal caregivers into account. The purpose of the study was to determine the variables affecting the level of effectiveness of home care, defined as the co-occurrence of high: quality of life (QoL), health behaviours and met needs.Subjects and method: The study involved 193 patients under the care of district nurses and 161 informal caregivers. The study…

Do You See What I See? Effectiveness of 360-Degree vs. 2D Video Ads Using a Neuroscience Approach

2021

[EN] This study compares cognitive and emotional responses to 360-degree vs. static (2D) videos in terms of visual attention, brand recognition, engagement of the prefrontal cortex, and emotions. Hypotheses are proposed based on the interactivity literature, cognitive overload, advertising response model and motivation, opportunity, and ability theoretical frameworks, and tested using neurophysiological tools: electroencephalography, eye-tracking, electrodermal activity, and facial coding. The results revealed that gaze view depends on ad content, visual attention paid being lower in 360-degree FMCG ads than in 2D ads. Brand logo recognition is lower in 360-degree ads than in 2D video ads. …

The background music-content congruence of TV advertisements: A neurophysiological study

2021

Abstract Music affects viewers’ responses to advertisements. In this study we present the findings of an experiment that investigates the emotional and cognitive reactions of subjects’ brains during exposure to television advertisements with music congruent, and incongruent, with the advertisement content. We analyze the electroencephalography signals and eye-tracking behaviors of a group of 90 women watching six TV advertisements. The study's findings suggested that incongruent music generates higher levels of attention and advertisement recall. On the other hand, frontal asymmetry measured through electroencephalography was shown to be higher with congruent music. Similarly, cognitive wor…

Student Learning in Public and Private Primary Schools in Madagascar

2003

03058; International audience; This article examines the progress of primary education in Madagascar. The challenge facing policy makers is enormous: how to maintain (or indeed, improve) learning across schools within Madagascar based on the data from the Conference des Ministries de l'Education des Pays Ayant le Francais en Partage in five African countries where common tests were administered to second- and fifth-graders. Beyond documenting the aggregate differences across sectors, the extent to which differences across schools, particularly between those in the public and private sectors, are associated with pupils' socioeconomic background, difference sin school inputs, and gaps across …

Socioeconomic effects and the role of public spending decomposition on income mobility: a moderated regression model

2022

The aim of this paper is to investigate, empirically, what components of public spending imply a decreasing effect on income mobility, and what components create income opportunities, also discussing the role of government effectiveness. The role of the components of government expenditure is analysed in the association between intergenerational income mobility and socioeconomic characteristics, which are relevant for the life chances of children. Using the Global Database on Intergenerational Mobility, containing estimates of intergenerational income mobility at country level, and applying the moderated regression model, the results show strikingly consistent patterns. A country with more …

Can stability of foreign aid agreement reduce global income inequality?

2017

Abstract Global initiatives on debt relief call for increasing foreign aid assistance to alleviate income inequality. But the potential gains from foreign aid policy coordination may be limited by the willing participation of diverse and self-interested donor countries. If stability of the foreign aid agreement does not occur, then aid effectiveness fails. Thus, the aim of this paper is to investigate the effects of the stability of foreign aid agreement on income redistribution amongst countries. The findings show that stability has positive effects on income mobility from the rich to the poorest countries reducing global income inequality.

: Why are fifteen year old French students performing less than their counterparts from other countries ?

2003

Why are fifteen year old French students performing less than their counterparts from other countries ? The scores of French students at the PISA international assessment are disappointing. This article is an attempt to understand why, through a comparison between the French situation and that of those countries which outperform France. This country appears to be in a rather favourable situation regarding the family and students attitude towards schooling and regarding the organisational framework of schooling, while in a rather unfavourable one regarding the teacher's attitudes towards learning and pupils. The article also tries to see if the French system does not compensate by a high deg…

An evaluation of the efficiency of French higher education: the case of scientific preparatory classes

2007

Looking at the famous French elite preparatory programmes called « Classes préparatoires aux grandes écoles » (CPGE), this research aimed to study the effectiveness of their training. The objective was to know if students from science CPGE develop specific behaviours that lead them to a better academic achievement in further engineering programmes (internal effectiveness) and a better professional career after graduation (external effectiveness). For comparison needs, the empirical approach focused on engineering schools enrolling both students from CPGE and students from other two-year programmes (DEUG, DUT, BTS). For assessing internal effectiveness, two surveys have been conducted; one d…
