Experimental and numerical investigation of heat transfer and fluid flow were conducted for classic heat exchanger elements (flat plate with fin-tubes in-line, staggered and with vortex generators) and corrugated-undulated ducts under transitional and weakly turbulent conditions. Resolving the true band gap of ZrNiSn half-Heusler thermoelectric materials

N-type XNiSn (X = Ti, Zr, Hf) half-Heusler (HH) compounds possess excellent thermoelectric properties, which are believed to be attributed to their relatively high mobility. However, p-type XNiSn HH compounds have poor figures of merit, zT, compared to XCoSb compounds. This can be traced to the suppression of the magnitude of the thermopower at high temperatures. E_g = 2eS_(max)T_(max) relates the band gap to the thermopower peak. However, from this formula, one would conclude that the band gap of p-type XNiSn solid solutions is only one-third that of n-type XNiSn, which effectively prevents p-type XNiSn HHs from being useful thermoelectric materials. Characterization of thermoelectric and thermogravimetric properties of conductive PEDOT:PSS films blended with SWCNTs and PVA

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) was blended with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) filler to form composites with thermoelectric properties. Studied samples were obtained by drop coating and solution casting methods. Thermoelectric measurements of PEDOT:PSS demonstrated that the addition of 5 wt. % SWCNTs increased the Seebeck coefficient value from 8.0 μV/K to 23.6 μV/K, while in the case of PEDOT:PSS/PVA blended with 5 wt. % SWCNT Seebeck coefficient value of 20.3 μV/K was achieved. Thermogravimetric analysis showed slight SWCNT effect on thermal stability of the investigated systems.

An Approach on the Hydrogen Absorption in Carbon Black after Gamma Irradiation

In this work, different samples of an industrial carbon black are used to study the hydrogen intake from an over pres-surized atmosphere and its changes due to alteration of its level of crystallinity produced by ¿-irradiation. The monitor-ing of the hydrogen adsorption was made by means of thermogravimetric analysis and by measurements of some elec-trical parameters as the Seebeck coefficient. X-ray diffraction shows that the irradiation diminishes the level of crystal-line perfection. These results show interesting possibilities to use carbon black as cheap hydrogen absorbers.

Since the adoption of the EU Directive, 2001/77/EC, the production of electricity from renewable energy sources has progressed. Apart from the indicative target proposed by the Directive, actually no other tools of policy monitoring exist. To fill this gap, we propose a dynamic method able to capture this multidimensional phenomenon, providing an assessment tool to measure the technical efficiency performances of EU countries in the photovoltaic sector (1996–2010). Intracavity Frequency Doubling and Difference Frequency Mixing for Pulsed ns Ti:Sapphire Laser Systems at On-Line Radioactive Ion Beam Facilities

Intra-cavity second harmonic generation of a Titanium:sapphire (Ti:sa) laser system has been used to improve the conversion efficiency to the second harmonic. Over the course of several experiments performance data spanning the whole wavelength range of a Ti:sa has been collected, which may be used as a guideline for future experiments. An average output power of up to 3.7 W was achieved, resulting in a conversion efficiency of >75 % to the second harmonic. A wavelength coverage from 340-525 nm has been demonstrated. Cerebral toxicity of penicillins in relation to their hydrophobic character

The neurotoxic effects of ticarcillin, methicillin, phenthicillin, oxacillin, cloxacillin and dicloxacillin were studied in the conscious rabbit. During and after intravenous administration of 1.2 and 2.4 g/kg, resp., over 50 min the blood concentrations of the drugs were determined and the neurotoxicity assessed by continuous recording of the electroencephalogram. The hydrophobia of the penicillins was characterized by determination of their partition coefficients between isobutanol and buffer solution pH 7.4.
