Organization and efficiency of education systems : some empirical findings

2000

International audience; Using a sample of countries chosen for their similar level of development, this article shows the extent to which the organisation of primary and secondary education differs from one country to another, notably with respect to the way in which systems differentiate and select pupils for specialised curricula. It also explores the question of whether an education system that sorts pupils at a very early age is more cost-effective than a system that does not sort pupils during compulsory education. The stylised description of national education system is based on various sources of information. The data used in the cost analysis come from OECD and UNESCO. Due to data l…

The Analyses of the Teacher’s Activities Facing with Efficiency

2008

The element of education has here a very important role not only regarding the aspect of quality of the act but in integrating the need of quality in the national culture. The individual’s conception has to assimilate the conviction that the welfare can not exist without a responsible and quality labor. Starting form this mission, it becomes obvious that the entire university’s activity should be oriented towards the institution’s competitiveness growth both at a national level and at the international level through: the quality of the offer and the result of the activity, a good management, a financial politic adequate to the rational use of the resources and of drawing new resources, to s…

Earnings management to exceed thresholds in continental and Anglo-Saxon accounting models: The British and French cases

2017

International audience; The purpose of this paper is to compare the extent to which French and British firms manage their earnings in order to avoid losses, decreases in earnings and earnings below the forecasts of analysts. Further, this study aims to investigate the factors that potentially influence earnings management to exceed thresholds with reference to the Anglo-Saxon and continental accounting models. Britain and France, correspondingly, belong to those different socio-economic environments. Based on a panel data of 1771 French and 2057 British firm-year observations during the period 2002–2012, we show that all firms considered manage earnings to beat zero and last year’s earnings…

Validity and Reliability of a New Optoelectronic System for Measuring Active Range of Motion of Upper Limb Joints in Asymptomatic and Symptomatic Sub…

2019

The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity of the Veloflex infrared dynamic angle-meter (Veloflex-IDA) and the intra- and inter-rater reliability when measuring the ranges of motion (ROMs) of the upper limb joints. Thirty-five healthy and 20 symptomatic participants were evaluated. Twelve upper limb movements were measured in two sessions with the Veloflex-IDA, which is a device composed of a camera that tracks the trajectory of retro-reflective markers. In addition, a goniometer was used in the first session to evaluate concurrent validity. Validity and agreement were evaluated by Pearson correlation coefficient (r) and Bland&ndash

Educational Efficiency in a Dea-Bootstrap Approach

2010

We use the PISA 2006 results to analyse the students' proficiencies in 24 European Countries with regard to two indexes that represent the educational resources available at home and the family background of students. Many factors affect the proficiencies and therefore, using a DEA-bootstrap method, we intend to measure the efficiency of the European educational systems as capability to ensure high students' competencies despite adverse conditions about the educational resources available in students' home and the family background.

PEMODELAN GEOGRAPHICALLY WEIGHTED REGRESSION (GWR) PADA PERSENTASE KRIMINALITAS DI PROVINSI JAWA TIMUR TAHUN 2017

2020

Crime is everything that exists in Indonesia. Based on BPS data in 2018, East Java Province ranks first in the Province of North Sumatra and the Special Capital Region of Jakarta. This research was conducted to determine the factors that support crime in each Regency / City of East Java Province. The method used in this research is Weighted Geographic Regression (GWR). Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) is one of the statistical methods used to model variable responses with regional or area-based predictor variables. Based on the GWR results, it is recognized as a variable Population Density Percentage (X1), Open Unemployment Rate (X2), Poor Population (X3), Population who are Victims…

The unusual hydrodynamical behaviour of freshwater oncolites

1997

Algal concretions are frequent in calcareous environments, occuring as individual particles (oncolites) that are easily transported during floods. Several parameters have been measured and calculated for a population of 127 particles from French streams. These oncolites have a high porosity (mean 42.7%) and a low density (mean 1.65), in respect to quartz and calcite. Oncolites have a settling velocity 1.5 times lower than that of quartz grains with the same nominal diameter. The computation of multiple correlations results in a classification in terms of decreasing efficiency: shape coefficients (Corey, ψ, and SI of Sneed and Folk), nominal diameter, density, edge sharpness and roughness. 1440 Child Mortality Under Five in Latvia, Causal Relationship and Reduction Possibilities in An International Context

2010

Background and aims: To identify the reasons of the continuously highest infant and under five mortality (U5M) rates in Latvia (since restoration of independence) within EU - 25, in order to find solutions to minimize the mortality rate in accordance with Millenium Development Goals (MDG). Methods: Analytical study of statistical data bases was performed by monitoring reports, private publications to find causal relationship in international aspect between U5M in Latvia and following factors: GDP, health budget per capita, Gini coefficient, medical service availability, etc. Results: Structure of U5M in Latvia differs from EU-25, being 2 to 10 times higher by reason of external causes of de…

Eco-efficiency assessment of municipal solid waste services: Influence of exogenous variables.

2020

Abstract Improving the eco-efficiency of municipalities in the provision of municipal solid waste (MSW) services is fundamental in the context of a circular economy. This study evaluates the eco-efficiency of a sample of Spanish municipalities, integrating the total cost as input, recyclable waste as desirable output, and unsorted waste as undesirable output. Following a pioneering approach, the weighted Russell directional distance model (a non-radial data envelopment analysis model) was employed, which allowed us to obtain a global inefficiency score and individual inefficiency scores for each variable integrated in the model. In the second stage of analysis, the potential factors affecti…

Causes of Public Expenditure Inefficiency and Proposals for Their Streamlining

2020

The public sector has continually developed, as new needs of the population have been identified and the expectations of the population regarding the quantity and the quality of the provided services have already been rising. Unlike private management, the public administration has not always been concerned with the way results have been achieved, but, particularly with the results themselves, and, as long as these have been satisfying for the population, the resources employed for obtaining the results were of no much concern. The public administration monopoly in the provision of some services has led to the possibility of generating imbalances between the quality of the provided services…
