Effect of uniaxial deformation on the optical scattering losses of a semicrystalline fluorocopolymer.

1997

Both small- and wide-angle light scattering as well as transmission measurements have been used to investigate the optical scattering losses of a vinylidene difluoride–tetrafluoroethylene–hexafluoropropylene copolymer crystallized from the melt. The main origin of the scattering loss is the wide-angle light scattering from the spherulitic superstructure. Uniaxial deformation transforms this structure into a fiber morphology. The attenuation of fibers has been measured for light propagating both parallel and perpendicular to the orientation axis. For both directions, the attenuation decreases with increasing draw ratio. Annealing of the fibers while keeping their ends fixed is an effective m…

Energy efficiency and CO2 emissions of port container terminal equipment: Evidence from the Port of Valencia

2019

Abstract Energy efficiency has emerged as a key point in port industry because of different factors such as the adoption of stronger environmental regulations and the increasing pressure of the local community on the surrounding ports. As gathering operational data from port terminals can be difficult due to privacy, studies on emissions and energy efficiency of these terminals are scarce. The following research provides key information about the real energy consumption and CO2 emissions of one of the most relevant container terminals in the Mediterranean area, located in Valencia, Spain. The results show that yard terminal tractors and rubber tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) are the main emissio…

2004

This paper presents the use of Support Vector Machines (SVMs) for prediction and analysis of antisense oligonucleotide (AO) efficacy. The collected database comprises 315 AO molecules including 68 features each, inducing a problem well-suited to SVMs. The task of feature selection is crucial given the presence of noisy or redundant features, and the well-known problem of the curse of dimensionality. We propose a two-stage strategy to develop an optimal model: (1) feature selection using correlation analysis, mutual information, and SVM-based recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE), and (2) AO prediction using standard and profiled SVM formulations. A profiled SVM gives different weights to …

Diffusion of oxygen in cork.

2012

International audience; This work reports measurements of effective oxygen diffusion coefficient in raw cork. Kinetics of oxygen transfer through cork is studied at 298 K thanks to a homemade manometric device composed of two gas compartments separated by a cork wafer sample. The first compartment contains oxygen, whereas the second one is kept under dynamic vacuum. The pressure decrease in the first compartment is recorded as a function of time. The effective diffusion coefficient D-eff is obtained by applying Fick's law to transient state using a numerical method based on finite differences. An analytical model derived from Fick's law applied to steady state is also proposed. Results give…

Relation entre transitivité et structure de communauté dans les réseaux complexes

2011

The relation between community structure and other topological properties in complex networks, has not been analyzed clearly. In this preliminary study, we explore experimentally the potential link between transitivity and community structure. We study the evolution of transitivity based on the quality of the community structure on artificially generated networks. Then we observe the evolution of community structure according to transitivity value. The results show a relationship between high transitivity and community structure. Additional analytical work is needed to identify the exact nature of this relationship.

Energy efficiency improvement in hospital buildings, based on the example of a selected type of hospital facility in Poland

2019

Abstract Energy demand in hospitals is of highly diverse nature: heat energy, cool energy and electricity. A guarantee of energy supply is required to ensure continuity of medical procedures. Taking care of the lowest possible costs of hospital operations, special attention should be paid to energy efficiency of the installations used in the hospital buildings. The paper presents an analysis of energy demand for heating, cooling, ventilation and lighting in an example hospital in Poland. The selected object was considered a reference as it was built according to a repetitive construction plan, according to which several dozen other hospitals were built in Poland. On the basis of data from 2…

A mathematical model of the self-averaging Pitot tube

2005

Abstract Flowmeters with self-averaging Pitot tubes are more and more often applied in practice. Their advantages are practically no additional flow losses, usability in the case of high temperature of fluids and simplicity of fitting. A mathematical model of a self-averaging Pitot tube including the influence of the probe shape, selected constructional features and flow conditions on the quantity of differential pressure gained has been given in this paper. The values and ranges of variations of the coefficients established for the model have been assessed on the basis of the numerically computed velocity and pressure fields around and inside the probe. Velocity and pressure fields were ca…

Separation of the azeotropic mixture 2-propanol + water employing different imidazolium ionic liquids as solvents

2020

Abstract The liquid-liquid equilibria of the ternary systems water (1) + 2-propanol (2) + [emim][Tf2N] (3) and water (1) + 2-propanol (2) + [hmim][Tf2N] (3) at 283.2, 303.2 and 323.2 K and atmospheric pressure were investigated, in order to achieve a better knowledge of the ternary mixture behaviour. The capability of [emim][Tf2N] and [hmim][Tf2N] as solvents in the separation of the azeotropic mixture water + 2-propanol was studied through the distribution coefficient and selectivity, and compared with the results obtained with other ionic liquids in the same azeotropic mixture studied before by our research group. The thermodynamic parameters of both ternary mixtures were calculated by th…

Capability study of 1-butyl-3- methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide and trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)phos…

2018

Abstract The liquid-liquid equilibria of the ternary systems water (1) + 1-propanol (2) + 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([bmim][Tf2N]) (3) and water (1) + 1-propanol (2) + trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)phosphinate ([TDTHP][Phosph]) (3) at 283.2, 303.2 and 323.2 K and atmospheric pressure were determined to study their behaviour, determine their thermodynamic parameters and know the capability as solvents of [bmim][Tf2N] and [TDTHP][Phosph] in the separation of the azeotropic mixture water + 1-propanol. The non-random two-liquid (NRTL) and universal quasichemical (UNIQUAC) models were used in the calculation of the thermodynamic par…

Study of the capability of 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ionic liquid as solvent in the separation of water from 1-pr…

2020

Abstract After the good behavior of different 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ionic liquids (ILs) used as solvents in the separation of 1-propanol and 2-propanol from water, liquid-liquid equilibria data was measured from a system formed by a ternary mixture of water, 1-propanol or 2-propanol and 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([dmim][Tf2N]) at 283.2, 303.2 and 323.2 K and atmospheric pressure. The non-random two-liquid (NRTL) and universal quasichemical (UNIQUAC) models were employed to obtain the thermodynamic parameters of both ternary mixtures, with good results in all cases. Finally, the capability of [dmim][Tf2N] to separate…
