Green Synthesis, Molecular Characterization and Associative Behavior of Some Gemini Surfactants without a Spacer Group.

2013

A series of new gemini surfactants without a spacer group, disodium 2,3-dialkyl-1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylates, were synthesized in a green chemistry context minimizing the use of organic solvents and applying microwaves (MW) when activation energy was required. Once the desired architecture was confirmed by means of the nuclear magnetic resonance technique (1H-NMR, 1H-1H COSY) for all the studied surfactants, the critical micellization concentration was determined by conductance measurements. The diffusion coefficient of micelles formed by the four compounds was characterized using pulsed field gradient (PFG)-NMR. Diffusion coefficients were found to be dependent on the concentration and …

A rational runoff coefficient for a revisited rational formula

2019

The Rational Formula (RF) is probably the most frequently applied equation in practical hydrology to compute the peak discharge, due to its simplicity and effective compromise between theory and data availability. Thus, after more than a century, the estimation of peak discharge through the RF is still an important and challenging issue in hydrology. The RF assumes response linearity and sometimes assumes that the return period does not depend on the runoff coefficient and neglects the time to ponding and the antecedent moisture condition. Moreover, the RF requires the critical duration of rainfall and the runoff coefficient to be estimated, both of which are highly controversial. This pape…

Conjugate Gradient Method for Brain Magnetic Resonance Images Segmentation

2018

Part 8: Pattern Recognition and Image Processing; International audience; Image segmentation is the process of partitioning the image into regions of interest in order to provide a meaningful representation of information. Nowadays, segmentation has become a necessity in many practical medical imaging methods as locating tumors and diseases. Hidden Markov Random Field model is one of several techniques used in image segmentation. It provides an elegant way to model the segmentation process. This modeling leads to the minimization of an objective function. Conjugate Gradient algorithm (CG) is one of the best known optimization techniques. This paper proposes the use of the nonlinear Conjugat…

Weighted Likelihood Function of Multiple Statistical Parameters to Retrieve 2D TRUS-MR Slice Correspondece for Prostate Biopsy

2012

International audience; This paper presents a novel method to identify the 2D axial Magnetic Resonance (MR) slice from a pre-acquired MR prostate volume that closely corresponds to the 2D axial Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS) slice obtained during prostate biopsy. The shape-context representations of the segmented prostate contours in both the imaging modalities are used to establish point correspondences using Bhattacharyya distance. Thereafter, Chi-square distance is used to find the prostate shape similarities between the MR slices and the TRUS slice. Normalized mutual information and correlation coefficient between the TRUS and MR slices are computed to find the information theoretic simi…

Isolation and Characterization of Epidermal DNA and RNA from Guinea Pig Skin

1971

DNA and RNA were isolated from mammalian epidermis in a relatively small scale procedure. The high purity and native state of the DNA isolated is reflected by its molar absorptivity E (P), its thermal hyperchromicity and its hyperchromicity upon DNase treatment and by its sedimentation profile as well as by its profile in a cesium chloride density gradient. The very low content of protein and RNA, as well as the data of DNA determination, indicate that this method permits the isolation of a highly purified product. This is further substantiated by the determination of UV absorption spectra and by analysis of the base composition. The mammalian skin DNA showed the following properties: Mol. w…

Flavor Release from i-Carrageenan Matrix: A Quantitative Structure-Property Relationships Approach

2006

International audience; We carried out a QSPR (quantitative structure-property relationships) approach to evaluate the influence of the chemical structure of aqueous matrixes over the partition coefficient between the gas phase and the matrix. The determination of the partition coefficient of flavor ingredients was performed by headspace analysis at equilibrium for both saline solution and -carrageenan gel. Starting from an initial list of 90 descriptors, we selected 10 descriptors to perform equation generation by the GFA (genetic function approximation) method available in the Cerius2 package. The best obtained equations involve only five descriptors, which encode electronic properties of…

Inverse Analysis Used to Determine Plastic Flow and Tribological Characteristics for Deep-drawing Sheet

2014

Abstract The present paper aims to develop a simple method based on inverse analysis that allows us to determine the laws of plastic flow coefficients and the friction coefficient between the material and punch. Selecting from different types of tests, we have chosen the Hecker test, because this test requires a single form of punch, the hemispherical one. In this test, the friction between the punch and the blank-sheet is caused by the blank-sheet strains and not by the movement it makes (as in deep drawing case). Besides the friction coefficient, other parameters like hardening and strength coefficients (n and k), influence the distribution of stresses and strains in the material. Using t…

From Arithmetic to Logic based AI: A Comparative Analysis of Neural Networks and Tsetlin Machine

2020

Neural networks constitute a well-established design method for current and future generations of artificial intelligence. They depends on regressed arithmetic between perceptrons organized in multiple layers to derive a set of weights that can be used for classification or prediction. Over the past few decades, significant progress has been made in low-complexity designs enabled by powerful hardware/software ecosystems. Built on the foundations of finite-state automata and game theory, Tsetlin Machine is increasingly gaining momentum as an emerging artificial intelligence design method. It is fundamentally based on propositional logic based formulation using booleanized input features. Rec…

Factor analysis-based approach for early uptake automatic quantification of breast cancer by 18F-FDG PET images sequence

2014

International audience; Factor Analysis of Medical Image Sequences (FAMIS) is recognized as one pioneer successfully used approach for analyzing especially dynamic images' sequence for estimating kinetics and associated compartments having a physiological meaning. Some studies tried to extend the exploring of this approach to analyze Positron Emission Tomography (PET) image modality for dynamic sequences. PET images with 18F-fluorodesoxyglucose (18F-FDG) is the gold standard for in vivo, evaluation of tumor glucose metabolism and is widely used in clinical oncology. In this paper, a novel approach is proposed to obtain an automated quantification method for early accumulation of 18F-FDG tra…

Country-specific correlations across Europe between modelled atmospheric cadmium and lead deposition and concentrations in mosses

2012

Previous analyses at the European scale have shown that cadmium and lead concentrations in mosses are primarily determined by the total deposition of these metals. Further analyses in the current study show that Spearman rank correlations between the concentration in mosses and the deposition modelled by the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (EMEP) are country and metal-specific. Significant positive correlations were found for about two thirds or more of the participating countries in 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005 (except for Cd in 1990). Correlations were often not significant and sometimes negative in countries where mosses were only sampled in a relatively small number of EMEP gr…
