Learning in a Ugandan gender advocacy NGO : Organizational growth and institutional wrestling
2020
The chapter explores organizational learning in a Ugandan gender advocacy organization, Action for Development (ACFODE), in the course of history of over 30 years. It identifies three instances of learning: changes in the habits of project implementation, changes in the advocacy approaches, and reformulation the ways of being an organization. Each of these instances include continuous institutional wrestling; between easily defined and measurable training approaches and activities embedded in daily life of communities, between contestation and co-optation in relationship with the state, and between being a structured modern organization or informal members’ meeting place. The chapter shows …

Vapaapalokunta - kasvupaikka kansalaistoiminnalle 1838-1938
2011
Vapaapalokuntatoiminta alkoi maassamme vuonna 1838 naapurimaista saadun esimerkin mukaisesti.
The role of temperament in children's affective and behavioral responses in achievement situations
2013
Abstract Although students' affects and behaviors in achievement situations have been shown to be influenced by their previous learning experiences, less is known about how they relate to students' dispositional characteristics, such as temperament. This study examined to what extent children's temperament is related to their affective and behavioral responses in achievement situations. Teachers rated first-graders' ( n = 153) temperamental characteristics in the Fall semester. Children's active task avoidance, anxiety, and helplessness were rated in test situations in the Fall and Spring semesters. The results showed that the more easily distracted the children were, the more task avoidan…

Sensitivity of bipartite network analyses to incomplete sampling and taxonomic uncertainty
2023
Bipartite network analysis is a powerful tool to study the processes structuring interactions in ecological communities. In applying the method, it is assumed that the sampled interactions provide an accurate representation of the actual community. However, acquiring a representative sample may be difficult as not all species are equally abundant or easily identifiable. Two potential sampling issues can compromise the conclusions of bipartite network analyses: failure to capture the full range of interactions (sampling completeness) and use of a taxonomic level higher than species to evaluate the network (taxonomic resolution). We asked how commonly used descriptors of bipartite antagonisti…
Committing, engaging and negotiating : Teachers’ stories about creating shared spaces for co-teaching
2019
The study examined teachers’ stories on developing co-teaching partnerships. The narratives of three two-teacher teams were used to illustrate joint professional landscapes. The teams narrated the development process as one in which commitment, engagement and negotiation were the key elements in shaping their professional landscapes. The findings indicate wide variation in the role of shared understanding and related engagement in co-constructing co-teaching practices. peerReviewed

Finnish teacher-students’ views on home-school cooperation
2019
This study focused on the views on home-school cooperation of teacher-students who are in the process of becoming professionals. The data were gathered from five focus-group interviews of 19 Finnish teacher-students. The data were analysed thematically. Better learning results were not the general aim of cooperation; instead, the aim was the child’s well-being. All parties benefited when cooperation functioned well. Yet, factors related to parents and teachers’ lack of time hinder cooperation. The views of home-school cooperation were a combination of the participants’ childhood memories, stories they had heard from their friends and colleagues and, less saliently, ideas originating from te…
