Lignin Inter-Diffusion Underlying Improved Mechanical Performance of Hot-Pressed Paper Webs
2021
Broader use of bio-based fibres in packaging becomes possible when the mechanical properties of fibre materials exceed those of conventional paperboard. Hot-pressing provides an efficient method to improve both the wet and dry strength of lignin-containing paper webs. Here we study varied pressing conditions for webs formed with thermomechanical pulp (TMP). The results are compared against similar data for a wide range of other fibre types. In addition to standard strength and structural measurements, we characterise the induced structural changes with X-ray microtomography and scanning electron microscopy. The wet strength generally increases monotonously up to a very high pressing tempera…
Up with ecology, down with economy? : The consolidation of the idea of climate change mitigation in the global public sphere
2018
Building on theories of valuation and evaluation, we develop an analytical framework that outlines six elements of the process of consolidation of an idea in the public sphere. We then use the framework to analyse the process of consolidation of the idea of climate change mitigation between 1997 and 2013, focusing on the interplay between ecological and economic evaluations. Our content analysis of 1274 articles in leading newspapers in five countries around the globe shows that (1) ecological arguments increase over time, (2) economic arguments decrease over time, (3) the visibility of environmental nongovernmental organizations as carriers of ecological ideas increases over time, (4) the …

Eettinen kuluttaminen kulutuskulttuurissa
2016
The aim of this dissertation is to contribute to our knowledge and understanding of the various meanings of ethical consumption constructed in consumer culture, especially from consumers’ viewpoint. This doctoral thesis belongs to the field of cultural and interpretive consumption research (CCT). The research consists of an introductory essay and three articles, of which two are published in academic journals. The introductory essay presents the general research task, conceptual framework, and methodological choices and discussion to conclude the main results of the dissertation. The research included in this dissertation uses qualitative methods and applies discursive content analysis, geo…
Living standards and changing expectations : investigating domestic necessity and environmental sustainability in an affluent society
2017
This study explores how the problematic relations of rising living standards and environmental sustainability may be better understood by investigating domestic necessity and daily going-on. These key subjects are looked at from two angles and through two kinds of research material: statistics and quantitative survey material constituting of a nationally representative longitudinal dataset of Finnish people (n=2,417 in 1999, n=3,574 in 2004, n=1,202 in 2009), and in-depth interviews (n=14) of a particular socio-economic group, the well-to-do who have higher-than average income and higher education, and those in their prime working age (30–45 years-old). The survey material provides a tempor…
Kohti vastuullista ylellisyyttä? : eettiset ja ekologiset trendit sekä luksuskulutus Suomessa
2012
Luksus- eli ylellisyystuotteet on perinteisesti yhdistetty korkeaan hintaan ja sosiaaliseen statukseen. Tutkimuksessa on kuitenkin havaittu muutoksia kuluttajien käsityksissä ylellisyydestä.
Ecological and social impacts of photovoltaic solar power plants and optimization of their locations in northern Chile
2017
Large scale photovoltaic (PV) solar power plants are gaining popularity in Chile. Solar energy potential in northern Chile is one of the best worldwide and true deserts are considered ideal environments for solar power plant projects. Atacama Desert is one of the driest places on earth. Nevertheless, northern Chile is home for many endemic species with 40 different vegetation types. The thesis presents studies of ecological effects (I-II) and location optimization of PV solar power plants in northern Chile (III). For ecological impacts two types of PV solar power plant technologies were studied: fixed mount solar plant and solar- tracking mounts. Study units were placed below the mounts or …
