Shining castles and humans of metal/floral appearance ? metaphorical language in the Palaiologan romances Kallimachos and Velthandros

2019

About eight centuries after Heliodorus, the Greek novel resurfaced in the twelfth century, in Komnenian Byzantium, and again two centuries later under the Palaiologan dynasty. This latter literary revival was due to the political stability of the imperial Byzantine government, which promoted cultural production, rhetorical education, and patronage networks. Kallimachos and Velthandros, two Palaiologan romances presented as court literature, combine ancient and medieval tropes with rhetorical artistry to blur the boundaries between the artificial and the natural. Castles and objects made of precious metals thus resemble living, natural spaces, and human characters are portrayed in metallurgi…

Intorno a Cees Nooteboom e José Saramago.

Michele Cometa

2021

This essay is about Michele Cometa, essayist, literary and aesthetic critic and one of the founders of Italian Visual Culture ,both as a cultural approach and as an academic discipline (or, rather, un-discipline). He is responsible for the reception of W.J.T. Mitchell in Italy, having edited the first translations of his works (see, Pictorial Turn. Essays on Visual Culture, 2008, new edition 2017). He also organized the first meeting entirely devoted to the discipline in 2007, hosting the encounter between Mitchell’s Pictorial turn and Belting’s Iconic Turn and the different approaches they gave origin to in Italy.

Preface

2017

The volume is devoted to images in painting, photography and cinema invented by literature. At the same time it intends to question, through this perspective, the relationship between text and image, between verbal and visual in modern and contemporary literature. The authors investigate the mutual boundaries between literature and arts from the point of view of aesthetics, visual culture and literary theory, trying to build a map of the notional ékphrasis, a description which constitutes the work of art while telling it.

Representació gràfica i ècfrasi en l’obra de Ramon Llull

2016

This article discusses the relation established between texts and graphic representations in works of Ramon …

Of whales and men: Caitríona O’Reilly’s septentrional voyage in “The Sea Cabinet” (2006)

2021

International audience; The title-poem of Caitríona O’Reilly’s second collection – The Sea Cabinet – is a sequence of five ekphrastic pieces paying tribute to the city of Hull’s past as a major whaling port. As she perambulates through the galleries of the Maritime Museum, the Irish poetess is inspired by all the paraphernalia on display: skeletons of various species of whales, whaler’s tools but also journals, logbooks, paintings, illustrations and hundreds of examples of the folk art and mythemes of the whaler. From one poem to the next, O’Reilly depicts the northernness of the Arctic Ocean as eery but bewitching otherness, focusing on illustrations of Captain Graville’s whaling ship ice-…
