Management of Distal Radius Fractures in the Elderly Patients

2015

Distal radius fractures are one of the most common injuries treated by the orthopedic surgeons representing almost 1/6 of the fractures that are treated in the emergency departments and the 75% of all fractures of the upper limb and are second only to hip fractures in elderly population. The age distribution of this kind of injury is typically bimodal with peaks in the young patients (6-25) and in the elderly patients older than 65. In the first case the mechanism of injury is usually a high energy trauma, such as a car accident, whilst in the second one is usually a low energy trauma like a domestic fall. Various classification systems have been proposed for these fractures. The classic ep…

Frailty and emergency surgery in the elderly: protocol of a prospective, multicenter study in Italy for evaluating perioperative outcome (The FRAILES…

2018

Improvements in living conditions and progress in medical management have resulted in better quality of life and longer life expectancy. Therefore, the number of older people undergoing surgery is increasing. Frailty is often described as a syndrome in aged patients where there is augmented vulnerability due to progressive loss of functional reserves. Studies suggest that frailty predisposes elderly to worsening outcome after surgery. Since emergency surgery is associated with higher mortality rates, it is paramount to have an accurate stratification of surgical risk in such patients. The aim of our study is to characterize the clinicopathological findings, management, and short-term outcom…

Use of Eribulin mesylate as second-line therapy in elderly patients with HER/2 negative metastatic breast cancer (MBC): Efficacy, tolerability and Qu…

2020

OBJECTIVE: Eribulin mesylate (Halaven®) is a non-taxane inhibitor of microtubule indicated as monotherapy in patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC), which progresses after anthracycline and taxanes therapy. In this retrospective observational study, we want to evaluate the efficacy of Eribulin in elderly women with MBC pretreated with anthracyclines and taxanes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 40 elderly patients > 70 years of age were enrolled, and the median age was 76 years (range 70-82). Overall survival (OS), Progression Free Survival (PFS), Objective Response Rate (ORR) were primary endpoints, tolerability, carcinoembryonic antigen levels 15.3 (Ca 15.3), before and after treatment, and…

In Silico Evaluation of Treatment of Periprosthetic Fractures in Elderly Patients After Hip Arthroplasty

2021

The aim of this study was to investigate the soundness of in silico finite element model (FEM) in the assessment of strain in the femur and in the components fixing the periprosthetic fracture in elderly patients after hip arthroplasty. From a group of 55 patients, aged 27–95, treated due to fractures after hip replacement in 2012–2018, 18 patients were separated out, aged over 85, out of whom 7 had type C fractures, according to the Vancouver classification. These seven patients formed the study group. The fractures were stabilized with a locking compression plate system and wire loops or by replacement of the endoprosthesis stem. The FEM was performed by processing radiological images of …

Studio di validazione dell'ACE-R in lingua italiana nella popolazione degli young-old e degli old-old

2012

Introduction. The main aims of the study were the translation into Italian, and validation subsequently of the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination Revised (ACE-R), and the evaluation of its usefulness in discriminating cognitively normal subjects from patients with mild dementia. Methods. The ACE-R was translated and adapted into Italian. The Italian ACE-R was administrated to a group of 179 elderly subjects (72 cognitively intact and 107 subjects with mild dementia, mean age 75.4 years ± 6.4). The group was stratified in two sub-samples according to age, i.e. young-old (< 75 years) and old-old (≥ 75 years), in order to evaluate test's sensitivity and specificity in detecting dementia among…

Hysterectomy for Non-Prolapsed Uterus in Elderly Patients: Predictors of Prolonged Hospital Stay

2022

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate surgical outcomes and complications of hysterectomy for benign conditions other than prolapse in elderly patients and to define predictors of prolonged hospitalization. Design: Retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data. Setting: This study was conducted in an academic research center. Patients: We utilized our institution surgical database to identify patients aged 60 years or more (“elderly”) who underwent hysterectomy for benign conditions other than pelvic organ prolap…

Long-term outcomes comparison of different types of des in elderly patients from a real-world experience

2009

OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate the impact on long-term clinical outcomes of different types of drug-eluting stents (DES) in elderly patients. BACKGROUND: Elderly patients constitute a fast-growing portion of cardiovascular patients, however, they are not adequately represented in clinical trials. Moreover, few data comparing different type of DES in elderly patients are available. METHODS: From a total of 2,330 consecutive patients treated at our institution with DES, we selected 207 elderly patients (≥ 75 years of age) who underwent, from May 2002 to December 2006, sirolimus-eluting stent (SES group, 116 patients [pts], 56%) or paclitaxel-eluting stent (PES group, 91 pts, 43.9%) implanta…

Self-care ability of older people living in urban areas of northwestern iran

2018

Background: Self-care ability was considered as a mechanism to improve the quality of life and reducing the high costs of medical services for elder people. Iran is experiencing increased elder people and healthy aging is one of the challenges. This study aimed to investigate self-care ability of elder people in Shahid Chamran and Dr. Shadpour health complexes, Tabriz- Iran. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study done in 2015. “The Self-care Ability Scale for the Elderly (SASE)” valid and reliable questionnaire (Persian version) was used for data collection. Totally, 220 samples were selected using G-Power 3.1.5 software. Sampling was conducted through systematic random method. Data were…

Did the covid-19 pandemic change hip fracture incidence in elderly?

2021

The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of the national lockdown on femoral neck fractures occurred in the elderly in an Italian city with more than 650 thousand people. We analyzed data related to patients over 65 years-old with femoral neck fractures admitted between March 9th and April 24th, 2020 to five public Hospitals in Palermo and four private Hospitals during lockdown. A total of 152 patients with hip fracture were observed with a significant reduction compared with the same period in 2017-2019. During the Lockdown period a reduction was observed of the mean age from 84.2 ±2.6 years old to 82.5±1.2 with a higher incidence in males, particularly in < 80-year-olds. The…
