Objectives The aim is to obtain a) a safe procedure to repair the large abdominal defect and reinforce the fragile zones around; b) a simple and rapid technique to reduce the operation time. Materials And Methods Retrospective review of medical records of 72 elderly patients in whom intraperitoneal mesh placement was used between January 1988 and June 2005. Short-run and long-run persistence of bad health among elderly

We study the health dynamics among older Americans using ten waves of the Health and Retirement Study following a spell-approach and a regression-based approach. The former is fully non parametric synthesizing the sequences of health status into a Health Persistence Index. The latter approach relies on a Latent Markov (LM) model capturing persistence in poor health by modelling time-varying unobserved heterogeneity. Our results show that only few elders experiences persistently a poor health status. The higher values of the index are consistently observed with the main socio-demo-economic risk factors. Background: To evaluate the feasibility and clinical preliminary results of weekly cisplatin and volumetric-modulated arc therapy to the pelvis with simultaneous integrated boost to macroscopic disease in a cohort of elderly patients. Materials and Methods: Inclusion criteria of this prospective study were age ≥70 years, Karnofsky performance status 70 to 100, locally advanced histologically proven squamous cervical carcinoma, and patients unable to undergo brachytherapy. Falling is the main cause of domestic accidents and fatal injuries to seniors at home. In this paper, we describe the design process for a new pervasive technology (CIRDO). The aim of this technology is to detect falls (via audio and video sensors) and to alert the elderly's family or caregivers. Two complementary studies were performed. Warm experts for elderly users : who are they and what do they do?

This paper examines “warm experts”—that is, nonprofessional persons who help inexperienced users come to terms with digital devices—and their significance for the use of digital media in everyday life by elderly Swedes. We analyze data from a national survey (N = 1264) and from qualitative, semistructured interviews with 18 elderly Swedes (aged 65+). Subjective well-being of elderly people in a social care home in the process of participation

Elderly people feel isolated from their former living place and they need social pedagogical support in the course of integration in a social care home. The integration of elderly people in a social environment is made more difficult because of the possible necessity of participation in the social life. The theoretical analysis has resulted in doing research on the theoretical content of the process of aging as well as in defining well-being and participation indicators. The research has been done in order to broaden the participation possibilities in a social care home, and as a result of the integration process to achieve the elderly people’s subjective well-being.
