The selection of spawning substratum by the river lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis) was studied in two experimental tanks with different flow conditions. In both tanks, four gravel sizes mixed with 15% sand were available to the test animals. In the tank with the lower current speed, lampreys selected in favour of the finest (2–8 mm) gravel size available against gravel sizes 4–20 mm and 8–40 mm. Selection was also significantly different in the tank with higher current speed where selection against the medium-sized substratum (4–20 mm) was evident, but there were no differences between selection for gravel sizes 2–8 mm, 2–40 mm and 8–40 mm relative to availability. This may reduce the possibility to obtain area-specific and population parameters estimates with adequate precision. Market research companies and institutes for producing official statistics face frequently this problem. Various models and methods for small area estimation (SAE) have been developed to solve this problem. The sample allocation must support the selected model and method to ensure efficient estimation and must be implemented in the design phase of the survey. Tiivistelmä – Abstract Tutkielman tarkoituksena oli selvittää yläkoulun oppilaiden ja opettajien mielipiteitä sanaston oppimiseen suunnatuista tehtävistä; millaiset tehtävät heidän mielestään sopivat sanaston oppimiseen yläkoulussa. Samalla selvitettiin sanaston oppimista koulun ulkopuolella sekä sanaston oppimiseen käytettyä aikaa. Oppilaiden ja opettajien mielipiteitä verrattiin toisiinsa. Tutkimus toteutettiin Tampereella vuonna 2010. Osallistujina olivat kolme englannin opettajaa ja heidän luokkansa, yksi kutakin luokka-astetta, yhteensä 52 oppilasta. Most studies of sexual selection in Drosophila have concentrated on a single signaling modality, usually either courtship song or cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs), which can act as contact pheromones. We have examined the relationship between both signal types and reproductive success using F1–3 offspring of wild- collected flies, raised in the lab. We used two populations of the Holarctic species Drosophila montana that represent different phylogeographic clades that have been separate for ca. 0.5 million years (MY), and differ to some extent in both traits. Kin selection on one hand, and gamete interactions in post-ejaculatory sexual selection on the other are two major research themes that have risen to prominence over the past half century and have simultaneously developed into central fields of research in evolutionary biology.
