Purely long-range polar molecules composed of identical lanthanide atoms

2019

International audience; Doubly polar molecules, possessing an electric dipole moment and a magnetic dipole moment, can strongly couple to both an external electric field and a magnetic field, providing unique opportunities to exert full control of the system quantum state at ultracold temperatures. We propose a method for creating a purely long-range doubly polar homonuclear molecule from a pair of strongly magnetic lanthanide atoms, one atom being in its ground level and the other in a superposition of quasi-degenerate opposite-parity excited levels [Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 063201 (2018)]. The electric dipole moment is induced by coupling the excited levels with an external electric field. W…

NaK Λ doubling and permanent electric dipoles in low-lying1Πstates: Experiment and theory

1998

The paper presents \ensuremath{\Lambda} splittings and q factors in the NaK $D{}^{1}\ensuremath{\Pi}$ state, directly measured from the electric radio-frequency-optical double resonance (RF-ODR) in laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) for a number of vibrational states $v=1--22$ with definite rotational levels J between 7 and 46. Permanent electric dipole moment values (d) have been obtained by measuring in LIF spectra the relative intensities of ``forbidden'' lines caused by dc Stark effect induced $e/f$ mixing in the ${}^{1}\ensuremath{\Pi}$ state, with their subsequent processing, which allowed us to obtain the $q/d$ ratio. A possible influence of the hyperfine structure on the RF-ODR signal…

Spin clocks: Probing fundamental symmetries in nature

2013

The detection of the free precession of co-located 3He/129Xe nuclear spins (clock comparison) is used as ultra-sensitive probe for non-magnetic spin interactions, since the magnetic dipole interaction (Zeeman-term) drops out in the weighted frequency difference, i.e., Δω = ωHe- γHe/γXe·ωXe of the respective Larmor frequencies. Recent results are reported on searches for (i) short-range P- and T-violating interactions between nucleons, and (ii) Lorentz violating signatures by monitoring the Larmor frequencies as the laboratory reference frame rotates with respect to distant stars (sidereal modulation). Finally, a new experimental initiative to search for an electric dipole moment of 129Xe (C…

Valence Topological Charge-Transfer Indices for Dipole Moments

2003

Valence topological charge-transfer (CT) indices are applied to the calculation of dipole moments. The dipole moments calculated by algebraic and vector semisums of the CT indices are defined. The combination of the CT indices allows the estimation of the dipole moments. The model is generalized for molecules with heteroatoms. The ability of the indices for the description of the molecular charge distribution is established by comparing them with the dipole moment of the valence-isoelectronic series of benzene and styrene. Two CT indices, μ v e c (vector semisum of vertex-pair dipole moments) and μ V v e c (valence μ v e c ) are proposed. μ v e c and μ V v e c are important for the predicti…

Site selectivity in excited-state intramolecular proton transfer in flavonols

2001

Abstract To investigate 4′-(diethylamino) (FET) and 4′-N-(15-azacrown-5) (FCR) derivatives of 3-hydroxyflavone in binary solvents and erythrocyte ghosts, we used the red-edge excitation spectroscopy (REES). The results obtained prove the existence of spectral heterogeneity of flavonols in the studied systems. The effect manifests itself in the dependence of the efficiency of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) on the excitation frequency. The electro-optical absorption method (EOAM) was used to measure the dipole moments of the normal form of FET. The electric dipole moments in the ground (μg) and excited Franck–Condon ( μ e FC ) states have the values 22.7×10−30 and 53.3×1…

Bounds on rare decays of η and η′ mesons from the neutron EDM

2019

We provide model-independent bounds on the rates of rare decays $\ensuremath{\eta}({\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}})\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\pi}$ based on experimental limits on the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM). Starting from phenomenological $\ensuremath{\eta}({\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}})\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\pi}$ couplings, the nEDM arises at the two-loop level. The leading-order relativistic chiral perturbation theory calculation with the minimal photon coupling to charged pions and a proton inside the loops leads to a finite, counterterm-free result. This is an improvement upon previous estimates which used approximations in evalu…

Overview of the Cosmic Axion Spin Precession Experiment (CASPEr)

2020

An overview of our experimental program to search for axion and axion-like-particle (ALP) dark matter using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques is presented. An oscillating axion field can exert a time-varying torque on nuclear spins either directly or via generation of an oscillating nuclear electric dipole moment (EDM). Magnetic resonance techniques can be used to detect such an effect. The first-generation experiments explore many decades of ALP parameter space beyond the current astrophysical and laboratory bounds. It is anticipated that future versions of the experiments will be sensitive to the axions associated with quantum chromodynamics (QCD) having masses \({\lesssim }10^{…

Search for CP-violating nuclear magnetic quadrupole moment using the LuOH+ cation

2020

The time-reversal and spatial parity violating interaction of the nuclear magnetic quadrupole moment (MQM) of the 175Lu and 176Lu nuclei with electrons in the molecular cation LuOH+ is studied. The resulting effect is expressed in terms of fundamental parameters, such as quantum chromodynamics angle θ⎯⎯, quark electric dipole moment (EDM), and chromo-EDM. For this, we have estimated the magnetic quadrupole moments of 175Lu and 176Lu nuclei and calculated the molecular constant that characterizes the interaction of the MQM with electrons in the considered molecules. Additionally, we predict the hyperfine structure constants for the ground electronic state of LuOH+. In the molecular calculati…
