Electrodeposited nickel–zinc alloy nanostructured electrodes for alkaline electrolyzer

2022

Abstract Over the last decade, as a consequence of the global decarbonization process, the interest towards green hydrogen production has drastically increased. In particular a substantial research effort has focused on the efficient and affordable production of carbon-free hydrogen production processes. In this context, the development of more efficient electrolyzers with low-cost electrode/electrocatalyst materials can play a key role. This work, investigates the fabrication of electrodes of nickel-zinc alloys with nanowires morphology cathode for alkaline electrolyzers. Electrodes are obtained by the simple method of template electrosynthesis that is also inexpensive and easily scalable.…

Study of the synergistic interaction between nickel, gold and molybdenum in novel modified NiO/GDC cermets, possible anode materials for CH4 fueled S…

2013

Abstract The present study concerns the structural and physicochemical characterization of novel Au–Mo–NiO/GDC cermets, alongside with measurements of their carbon tolerance. This is an investigation on whether commercially available NiO/GDC powder that is modified with Au and/or Mo can yield possible electrocatalysts as anodes for CH4 fueled SOFCs. Specifically, the performed preparation methods of deposition-precipitation and deposition-coprecipitation permitted the modification of a commercial electrocatalyst and lead to cermets that exhibit different reaction kinetics for the catalytic dissociation of CH4 and different performance for CH4 steam reforming. The most interesting structural…

Improving the onset potential and Tafel slope determination of earth-abundant water oxidation electrocatalysts

2021

To date, a plethora of electrocatalysts for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER) have been proposed. For evaluating their electrocatalytic behavior the determination of the onset potential in each studied electrolyte is a key parameter. Nevertheless, this evaluation becomes particularly problematic for first- transition metal catalysts as well as by the use of electroactive collectors ( e.g. Ni foams) whose redox peaks overlap the onset potential. A usual solution to detect the onset potential requires the availabil- ity of in-situ mass spectrometric determination of the generated oxygen. In this work, we present fast and easier available cyclic voltammetry and coulovoltammetric responses to…

Electrocatalytic carboxylation of chloroacetonitrile at a silver cathode for the synthesis of cyanoacetic acid

2008

Abstract The electrocatalytic carboxylation of chloroacetonitrile to cyanoacetic acid performed at silver cathodes was investigated both theoretically and experimentally. Silver exhibits powerful electrocatalytic activities towards the reduction of chloroacetonitrile. In CO 2 -saturated CH 3 CN, reduction of NCCH 2 Cl occurs at potentials that are about 0.7 V more positive than those observed at glassy carbon and gives cyanoacetic acid in good yields. Theoretical considerations on the effect of operative parameters on the performances of the process were confirmed by electrocarboxylation experiments performed in undivided cells equipped with sacrificial anodes both in a bench-scale electroc…

Electroreduction of aliphatic chlorides at silver cathodes in water

2010

The effect of water on the reduction of aliphatic chlorides at silver cathodes was investigated by cyclovoltammetric experiments in acetonitrile, water and their mixture and focused electrolyses in water solutions. The addition of water to acetonitrile gives rise to the formation of new peaks and/or the displacement of pre-existent peaks at dramatically less negative potentials. In a water medium, silver shows a very large electrocatalytic effect towards the reduction of chlorinated aliphatic compounds belonging to the classes of chloromethanes, chloroethanes and chloroethenes, dramatically higher than that observed in aprotic solvents such as dimethylformamide (DMF) or acetonitrile (ACN). …

Coadsorption of NRR and HER Intermediates Determines the Performance of Ru-N4 toward Electrocatalytic N2 Reduction

2021

Efficiency of the electrochemical N2 reduction reaction (NRR) to ammonia is seriously limited by the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) but our current atomic-scale insight on the factors controlling HER/NRR competition are unknown. Herein we unveil the elementary mechanism, thermodynamics, and kinetics determining the HER/NRR selectivity on the state-of-the-art NRR electrocatalyst, Ru-N4 using constant potential density functional theory calculations (DFT). The calculations show that NRR and HER intermediates coadsorb on the catalyst where HER is greatly suppressed by the NRR intermediates. The first reaction step leading to either *NNH or *H determines the selectivity towards NRR…

Solution-Processed Ni-Based Nanocomposite Electrocatalysts: An Approach to Highly Efficient Electrochemical Water Splitting

2021

In this study, we report an up-scalable and low-cost solution-processed method to in situ synthesize an earth-abundant non-stoichiometric NiOx-based electrocatalytic film for water oxidation. The catalytic activity was found to be inversely proportional to the baking temperature, which varied from 50 to 500 °C. We found the formation of a hybrid nanocomposite thin film of NiOx nanocrystals (<2 nm size) inside an acetate-based organic matrix at low temperatures (<200 °C). The defective and short-range structural order of the NiOx-based nanocomposite electrocatalysts, compatible with lattice stress, low electrical conductivity, and high density of catalytically active surface species, and hig…

Electrochemical characterization of praseodymia doped zircon. Catalytic effect on the electrochemical reduction of molecular oxygen in polar organic …

2011

The voltammetry of microparticles and scanning electrochemical microscopy methodologies are applied to characterize praseodymium centers in praseodymia-doped zircon (PrxZr(1−y)Si(1−z)O4; y + z = x; 0.02 < x < 0.10) specimens prepared via sol–gel synthetic routes. In contact with aqueous electrolytes, two overlapping Pr-centered cathodic processes, attributable to the Pr (IV) to Pr (III) reduction of Pr centers in different sites are obtained. In water-containing, air-saturated acetone and DMSO solutions as solvent, PrxZr(1−y)Si(1−z)O4 materials produce a significant catalytic effect on the electrochemical reduction of peroxide radical anion electrochemically generated. These electrochemical…

Enhancing the electrocatalytic activity and stability of Prussian blue analogues by increasing their electroactive sites through the introduction of …

2021

Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) have been proven as excellent Earth-abundant electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic, neutral and alkaline media. Further improvements can be achieved by increasing their electrical conductivity, but scarce attention has been paid to quantify the electroactive sites of the electrocatalyst when this enhancement occurs. In this work, we have studied how the chemical design influences the specific density of electroactive sites in different Au-PBA nanostructures. Thus, we have first obtained and fully characterized a variety of monodisperse core@shell hybrid nanoparticles of Au@PBA (PBA of NiIIFeII and CoIIFeII) with different shell siz…
