Variable Thickness Porous Anodic Alumina/Metal Film Bilayers for Optimization of Plasmonic Scattering by Nanoholes on Mirror

2018

Continuously variable thickness porous anodic aluminum oxide (PAAO) films were obtained using electrochemical oxidation of bulk aluminum sheet while both electrodes were simultaneously withdrawn from the electrolyte solution. The thickness gradient was controlled by the withdrawal rate (1–10 mm/min range) and thickness variation demonstrated from below 50 nm to above 1 micrometer. The thickness increased linearly with the sample lateral coordinate, whereas the nanopore structure (diameter and interpore distance) remained unchanged. Effects of the initial pore growth and capillary forces are discussed. The presented method can be used for tuning optimal PAAO thickness for optical and other a…

Anodic growth of passive layers on steel rebars in an alkaline medium simulating the concrete pores

2006

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) techniques have been used to study passive layers anodically grown on steel rebars in an aqueous alkaline solution simulating the electrolyte of the concrete pores. Nyquist diagrams recorded by EIS at the different stabilization potentials show a diffusional tail at low frequencies. The analysis of the impedance measurements has been made by means of an equivalent circuit with a Warburg component and within the framework of the point defect model (PDM) theory. It is observed that the calculated concentration of vacancies is a function of the potential in accordance with the theoretical prediction of the PDM.

Design of highly efficient porous carbon foam cathode for electro-Fenton degradation of antimicrobial sulfanilamide

2021

Abstract This work investigated, for the first time, the potential of novel biomass derived carbon foam as a suitable and efficient electrocatalytic material (as cathode) for in-situ hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production and its applicability in electro-Fenton (EF) approach for oxidizing organic pollutants. The carbon foam cathode was prepared by polymerization and carbonization of sucrose at high temperature. The as-prepared carbon foam consists of highly porous and extremely light structure with interconnected spherical cells. It exhibited excellent electrocatalytic properties such as high conductivity, relatively high redox current and several active-sites for producing oxidizing species, …

PEM electrolyzer characterization with carbon-based hardware and material sets

2021

Abstract The research and development of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is an upcoming and growing area due to a rising interest in hydrogen as an energy carrier. Operating conditions are harsher than in a fuel cell system, particularly because the potentials required for the oxygen evolution reaction are significantly higher. In commercial water electrolysis systems, this is compensated by typically using titanium material sets that are often protected against oxidation through coating processes. Such material choices make small scale research hardware and porous transport layers expensive and difficult to source. In this work, we show that the stability of traditional…

Revealing Charge-Transfer Dynamics at Electrified Sulfur Cathodes Using Constrained Density Functional Theory

2021

To understand and control the behavior of electrochemical systems, including batteries and electrocatalysts, we seek molecular-level details of the charge transfer mechanisms at electrified interfaces. Recognizing some key limitations of standard equilibrium electronic structure methods to model materials and their interfaces, we propose applying charge constraints to effectively separate electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom, which are especially beneficial to the study of conversion electrodes, where electronic charge carriers are converted to much slower polarons within a material that is nonmetallic. We demonstrate the need for such an approach within the context of sulfur cathodes …

Optimizing the nickel boride layer thickness in a spectroelectrochemical ATR-FTIR thin-film flow cell applied in glycerol oxidation

2021

Abstract The influence of the drop-casted nickel boride catalyst loading on glassy carbon electrodes was investigated in a spectroelectrochemical ATR-FTIR thin-film flow cell applied in alkaline glycerol electrooxidation. The continuously operated radial flow cell consisted of a borehole electrode positioned 50 µm above an internal reflection element enabling operando FTIR spectroscopy. It is identified as a suitable tool for facile and reproducible screening of electrocatalysts under well-defined conditions, additionally providing access to the selectivities in complex reaction networks such as glycerol oxidation. The fast product identification by ATR-IR spectroscopy was validated by the …

Influence of Iron Sulfide Nanoparticle Sizes in Solid‐State Batteries**

2021

Abstract Given the inherent performance limitations of intercalation‐based lithium‐ion batteries, solid‐state conversion batteries are promising systems for future energy storage. A high specific capacity and natural abundancy make iron disulfide (FeS2) a promising cathode‐active material. In this work, FeS2 nanoparticles were prepared solvothermally. By adjusting the synthesis conditions, samples with average particle diameters between 10 nm and 35 nm were synthesized. The electrochemical performance was evaluated in solid‐state cells with a Li‐argyrodite solid electrolyte. While the reduction of FeS2 was found to be irreversible in the initial discharge, a stable cycling of the reduced sp…

Assessment on the use of the amorphous semiconductor theory for the analysis of oxide films

2015

Abstract Although the theory of Schottky barrier in amorphous semiconductors is generally accepted, the limits of validity of such theory have not yet been explored. The classic semi-analytical solution is obtained under the constraint of constant electronic density of states (DOS) distribution in the mobility gap. In order to take into account the presence of a DOS variable in energy, a semi-empirical corrective power law was introduced in this paper. It is shown that the equations derived for thick films maintain their validity also in the case of thin films, provided that the space charge region width remains lower than 70% of the whole film thickness. A new expression based on the use o…

An analog electronic interface to measure electrical conductivity in liquids

2005

Abstract Measuring conductivity in aqueous solutions is a problem which is not easy to solve due to the differences in mass and mobility that exist between ions conduction and electrons. Additionally, it is necessary to keep in mind the interaction processes electrode-solution. As a consequence, the electrolytic conductivity cell has to be polarized with alternating voltage of adequate amplitude and frequency in order to extract the correct information. In this paper an electronic conditioning circuit is presented which converts electric conductivity into a value of continuous voltage. A hardware solution is proposed to do the conductivity temperature compensation. Experimental results obta…

AMORPHOUS SEMICONDUCTOR-ELECTROLYTE JUNCTION. A NEW INTERPRETATION OF THE IMPEDANCE DATA OF AMORPHOUS SEMICONDUCTING FILMS ON METALS.

1986

On the basis of the theory of amorphous semiconductor Schottky barrier an equivalent electrical circuit of the amorphous oxide film/electrolyte interface is proposed.—The analytical expressions for the equivalent conductance and capacitance of the barrier are reported in the hypothesis of a constant density of states within the mobility gap.—According to this model, the semiconducting properties and the impedance behaviour at different frequencies of anodic oxide films on Niobium are interpreted by taking into account the amorphous nature of the films.—An explanation for the anomalous behaviour of the Mott-Schottky plots usually observed with amorphous anodic oxide films is presented.—The p…
