Approximatively 10 liters of fluid enter the gastrointestinal tract with food and endogenous secretions, and only less than 100 ml or 1% leave it with the faeces. Minor changes of this equilibrium in the intestinal transport may cause diarrhoea or constipation. Functions of small and large intestine differ markedly in transport of electrolytes and water. The relatively leaky epithelium of the small intestine allows for rapid equilibrium of osmolality in both directions while the tight epithelium of the colon preserves electrolytes and water once they have been absorbed. Stimulated 7^Li echo NMR spectroscopy of slow ionic motions in a solid electrolyte

Abstract Lithium spin-alignment spectroscopy is presented as an NMR technique for studying slow translational motions in solid and solid-like ionic conductors. We employ phase cycling that allows to measure two-time translational correlation functions via the generation of a pure quadrupolar ordered state. Correlation functions of the crystalline electrolyte Li 3 Sc 2 (PO 4 ) 3 were recorded for times ranging from about 0.1 ms to more than 10 s, implying that translational diffusion coefficients smaller than 10 −20 m 2 /s become accessible.

Giant barocaloric effects over a wide temperature range in superionic conductor AgI

Current interest in barocaloric effects has been stimulated by the discovery that these pressure-driven thermal changes can be giant near ferroic phase transitions in materials that display magnetic or electrical order. Here we demonstrate giant inverse barocaloric effects in the solid electrolyte AgI, near its superionic phase transition at ~420 K. Over a wide range of temperatures, hydrostatic pressure changes of 2.5 kbar yield large and reversible barocaloric effects, resulting in large values of refrigerant capacity. Independent ion migration in suspensions of strongly interacting charged colloidal spheres

We report on sytematic measurements of the low frequency conductivity in aequous supensions of highly charged colloidal spheres. System preparation in a closed tubing system results in precisely controlled number densities between 1E16/m3 and 1E19/m^3 (packing fractions between 1E-7 and 1E-2) and electrolyte concentrations between 1E-7 and 1E-3 mol/l. Due to long ranged Coulomb repulsion some of the systems show a pronounced fluid or crystalline order. Under deionized conditions we find s to depend linearily on the packing fraction with no detectable influence of the phase transitions. Red Shift in the Light Absorption Threshold of Anodic TiO2 Films Induced by Nitrogen Incorporation

Abstract Titanium foils were anodized in ammonium containing and ammonium free solutions in order to check the possibility of inducing nitrogen incorporation into anodic TiO 2 films. XPS spectra confirmed the presence of O-Ti-N bonds on the surface of the anodic films prepared in ammonium biborate electrolytes. In order to evidence the effect of nitrogen incorporation on the light absorption threshold, photoelectrochemical behavior of as-anodized and high temperature annealed films as a function of the anodizing electrolyte composition were investigated. Photoelectrochemical study on anodic aluminum oxide films. Internal photoemission processes at the metal-oxide interface

A photoelectrochemical investigation has been carried out on aluminum oxide films grown anodically at constant rate up to different thicknesses. Depending on the potential both anodic and cathodic photocurrents were observed at photon energies well below the optical bandgap expected for these layers. This finding is explained with the presence of internal photoinjection processes both for electrons and holes from the base metal into the oxide film. The analysis of the photocurrent spectra has given the threshold energies for both processes.
