Raman investigation of single oxidized carbon nanotubes

2001

The oxidation process of single-walled carbon nanotubes via nitric acid treatment was followed by IR-, UV-Vis-NIR, and single bundle Raman spectroscopy. The introduction of functional, oxygen-containing groups is revealed by an additional absorption band at 1725 cm−1, characteristic of carbonyl stretch vibrations. No significant shift of the optical absorption bands could be detected after oxidation. The combination of atomic force microscopy and confocal scanning resonance-enhanced Raman microscopy was used to investigate thin bundles and, eventually, individual nanotubes in detail. Influence on the macrosegregation of binary metallic alloys by thermoelectromagnetic convection and electromagnetic stirring combination

International audience; Influence of a slowly rotating 0.5 T transverse magnetic field on the directionally solidified metallic alloy has been experimentally studied in this work. Main idea is to study an influence on the melt flow and material structure caused by the simultaneous electromagnetic stirring and thermoelectromagnetic convection with comparable magnitudes. Reliable Propagation of Magnetic Domain Walls in Cross Structures for Advanced Multiturn Sensors

[EN] We develop and analyze an advanced concept for a domain-wall-based sensing of rotations. Moving domain walls in n closed loops with n - 1 intersecting convolutions by rotating fields, we are able to sense n rotations. By combining loops with coprime numbers of rotations, we create a sensor system allowing for the total counting of millions of turns of a rotating applied magnetic field. We analyze the operation of the sensor and identify the intersecting cross structures as the critical component for reliable operation. Interference-assisted resonant detection of axions

Detection schemes for the quantum chromodynamics axions and other axion-like particles in light-shining-through-a-wall (LSW) experiments are based on the conversion of these particles into photons in a magnetic field. An alternative scheme may involve the detection via a resonant atomic or molecular transition induced by resonant axion absorption. The signal obtained in this process is second order in the axion-electron interaction constant but may become first order if we allow interference between the axion-induced transition amplitude and the transition amplitude induced by the electromagnetic radiation that produces the axions.

The transient gravitational-wave sky

Interferometric detectors will very soon give us an unprecedented view of the gravitational-wave sky, and in particular of the explosive and transient Universe. Now is the time to challenge our theoretical understanding of short-duration gravitational-wave signatures from cataclysmic events, their connection to more traditional electromagnetic and particle astrophysics, and the data analysis techniques that will make the observations a reality. This paper summarizes the state of the art, future science opportunities, and current challenges in understanding gravitational-wave transients.

Coupled Electromechanical Analysis of a Permanent-Magnet Bearing

In this paper we present a new Permanent Magnets (PMs) bearing, which is composed of a rotor capable to levitate at a short distance from a dedicated stator. Proper configurations of PMs arranged on both the stator and the rotor allows having the magnetic suspension. Intrinsic mechanical instability characterizes the device; a passive stabilization is attempted exploiting eddy currents on a conducting sheet that surrounds the magnets on the stator.
