Theoretical study of an absorbing sample in infrared near-field spectromicroscopy

2004

Abstract This paper is devoted to study the near-field spectrometry in the infrared spectral range. To understand the behavior of the infrared light diffracted by an object, numerical calculations have been carried out with Fourier Modale (FM) method within R-matrix algorithm. We consider the case of three-dimensional system including a translational symmetry in one direction, where is included an homogenous layer in which is buried an absorbing object. Using an optical near-field analysis and by calculating the electric field intensity distribution, both of the thickness effect and the lateral size of the absorbing sample are investigated. It is found that the distribution of the intensity…

Boson peak and hybridization of acoustic modes with vibrations of nanometric heterogeneities in glasses

2007

9 pages; International audience; The low-frequency dynamics in glasses is compared with that in icosahedral quasicrystals. For both arrangements of matter, the existence of nanometric heterogeneities, implying the existence of a nanometric inhomogeneous elastic network, is expected to play a crucial role. Thanks to this comparison, mostly based on inelastic x-ray (neutron) scattering data, it is proposed that the excess of vibrational density of states observed in both materials is due to the hybridization of longitudinal and transverse acoustic modes with modes localized around the heterogeneities.

Excitation of a one-dimensional evanescent wave by conical edge diffraction of surface plasmon

2011

International audience; The experimental observation of a one-dimensional evanescent wave supported by a 90◦ metal edge is reported. Through a measurement of in-plane momenta, we clearly demonstrate the dimensional character of this surface wave and show that it is non-radiative in the superstrate. Excitation conditions, lateral extension and polarization properties of this wave are discussed. Finally, we explore the effect of the surrounding dielectric medium and demonstrate that a single edge can sustain distinct excitations.

Asymmetric transmission of transverse magnetic or radially polarized THZ waves through sub-wavelength gratings

2015

We have developed a metallic double circular grating with sub-wavelength slits which blocks radially polarized light incident from one of its sides and acts as a focusing diffractive element in the other direction. The proposed grating has been optimized for the sub-THz frequency range. Unidirectional transmission through the grating has been demonstrated experimentally at 0.1 THz. We have also developed a planar metallic double grating with sub-wavelength slits which blocks light with a transverse magnetic polarization incident from one of the grating sides and transmits radiation incident from the opposite direction into the +1 and −1 diffraction orders. These gratings which could be used…

Wideband THz time domain spectroscopy based on optical rectification and electro-optic sampling

2013

We present an analytical model describing the full electromagnetic propagation in a THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) system, from the THz pulses via Optical Rectification to the detection via Electro Optic-Sampling. While several investigations deal singularly with the many elements that constitute a THz-TDS, in our work we pay particular attention to the modelling of the time-frequency behaviour of all the stages which compose the experimental set-up. Therefore, our model considers the following main aspects: (i) pump beam focusing into the generation crystal; (ii) phase-matching inside both the generation and detection crystals; (iii) chromatic dispersion and absorption inside the c…

<title>Coumarin fluorescent probes by electro-optical and laser spectrofluorimetry methods</title>

1997

Modified electro-optical absorption and emission methods were used to measure the dipole moments of six coumarin fluorescent probes (CU1, CU4, CU7, CU30, CU120, CU334) in the equilibrated ground, excited Franck-Condon and equilibrated excited states. The measurements were performed in cyclohexane and dioxane at room temperature. The equilibrated ground and excited states dipole measured by electro-optical methods are compared with those derived from other measurements techniques and from semiempirical calculations. Experiments and calculations performed in this work reveal a set of anomalous and interesting properties of CU7 and CU30 in solutions. The spectral dependence of some electro-opt…

Elongated push–pull diphenylpolyenes for nonlinear optics: molecular engineering of quadratic and cubic optical nonlinearities via tuning of intramol…

1999

Abstract Push–pull polyenes are of particular interest for nonlinear optics (NLO) as well as model compounds for long-distance intramolecular charge transfer (ICT). In order to tune the ICT phenomenon and control the linear and nonlinear optical properties, we have synthesized and investigated several series of soluble push–pull diphenylpolyenes of increasing length and having various donor (D) and acceptor (A) end groups. Their linear and NLO properties have been studied by performing electro-optical absorption measurements (EOAM) and third-harmonic generation (THG) experiments in solution. Each push–pull molecule exhibits an intense ICT absorption band in the visible characterized by an i…

Ab initio calculations for the far infrared collision induced absorption by N2 gas

2014

We present (far-infrared) Collision Induced Absorption (CIA) spectra calculations for pure gaseous N2 made for the first time, from first-principles. They were carried out using classical molecular dynamics simulations based on ab initio predictions of both the intermolecular potential and the induced-dipole moment. These calculations reproduce satisfactory well the experimental values (intensity and band profile) with agreement within 3% at 149 K. With respect to results obtained with only the long range (asymptotic) dipole moment (DM), including the short range overlap contribution improves the band intensity and profile at 149 K, but it deteriorates them at 296 K. The results show that t…

<title>Electro-optical and fluorescence lifetime studies of aminophthalimide probes in liquids</title>

1995

The modified electro-optical absorption and emission methods are described as well as their use for measurements of electrical dipole moments of five aminophthalimides in ground and excited states. It is found that there exists a principal difference between properties of 3- aminophthalimide (3AP) and 4-amino-N-methylphthalimide (4ANMP) in different solvents. The equilibrated dipole moment of 3AP in its excited state is practically independent on the solvent polarity, in comparison with 4ANMP. The possible mechanism of this effect is discussed.© (1995) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Downloading of the abstract is permitted for personal use only.

Wavelet-based efficient simulation of electromagnetic transients in a lightning protection system

2003

In this paper, a wavelet-based efficient simulation of electromagnetic transients in a lightning protection systems (LPS) is presented. The analysis of electromagnetic transients is carried out by employing the thin-wire electric field integral equation in frequency domain. In order to easily handle the boundary conditions of the integral equation, semiorthogonal compactly supported spline wavelets, constructed for the bounded interval [0,1], have been taken into account in expanding the unknown longitudinal currents. The integral equation is then solved by means of the Galerkin method. As a preprocessing stage, a discrete wavelet transform is used in order to efficiently compress the Fouri…
