Characterization of electromagnetic noise suppression sheet for aerospace applications

2016

Electromagnetic noise suppression sheets based on absorber materials can be an interesting solution to reduce or suppress noise emissions at a high-frequency region that may cause complex EMI problems. These materials usually are characterized by their permeability but their performance also depend on other factors such as dimension, geometry, thickness or noise source kind. Three experimental methods are proposed in order to characterize absorber sheets in different kind of applications taking into account the last factors. These setups make it possible to test several samples with different characteristics and to analyse the absorption capacity in applications with transmission line probl…

A Flux and Speed Observer for Sensorless SPIM Applications

2010

It is usual to find single-phase induction motor (SPIM) in several house, office, shopping, farm, and industry appliances, which is become more sophisticated and requires the development of high performance alternatives to drive a SPIM. All proposed strategies to improve the performance SPIM need the evaluation of the rotational speed or position information. Since the use of conventional sensors to measure the rotational speed cannot be justified for SPIM applications, the adoption of a sensorless strategy is a more reasonable option for these cases. This paper presents a flux and speed observer for sensorless applications involving SPIMs. The performance of the proposed observer is verifi…

Optical Fibre Control-Measurement Systems Of Compound HV/HP Electrical Equipment

1988

Responsible electrical equipment should be controlled during the work in care of their high reliability. Traditional control measurement systems cannot fulfil the task because of the hard conditions in which the equipment may operate (various electrical potentials, electromagnetic interferences, changes of temperature, etc.). The development of fibre optic transmission media and fibre optic sensors allows the construction of new control measurement systems for cooperation with such electrical equipment as: converters, generators, treLnsforniens, switch bays, busbards, etc. Those optical fibre structures, composed of bu-ses and sensors are subject of this paper. The main attention is paid to…

A portable instrument for the location and identification of defects generating PD

2011

A portable instrument based on an antenna probe and suitable for partial discharge detection, have been characterized through both laboratory and on-site experiments carried out on coils and stator windings of ac rotating machines. The antenna probe allows the capture of electromagnetic waves in a bandwidth of 0.1–100 MHz. Pulse signals and ac supply voltage reference are obtained by means of high-pass and low-pass filters, respectively, so avoiding the need of a direct connection with the objects under test. By this way, real-time phase resolved partial discharge patterns can be derived. Results of a comparison of the diagnostic information provided by PD patterns due to conducted and irra…

An electromagnetic generator for MAGLEV transportation systems

2015

The fundamental idea of this paper is to use the distribution theory to analyze linear generators in order to include in the mathematical model both ideal a non ideal features. This paper shows how the use of distribution theory can be used in order to establish a mathematical model able to describe both the ordinary working condition of a linear generator for MAGLEV systems as well the role of the unavoidable irregularities and non-ideal features.

Numerical investigation of the induced voltage on a cable placed at random locations inside a metallic enclosure

2008

In this paper, we investigate the induced voltage on a cable when placed at random locations inside a metallic enclosure. The analysis consists of a cable of defined length and fixed terminals, but different layouts, placed in a metallic enclosure containing an aperture. The induced voltages for the different layouts are computed for a plane wave incident on the aperture. A second analysis is performed with no cable (i.e., an empty enclosure) and the results are compared to those for the cable present. The results are compared to the resonance frequencies of the closed cavity and the aperture.

Transmission line meshes for computational simulation of electromagnetic modes in the Earth's atmosphere

2007

PurposeTwo transmission line meshes to simulate electromagnetic waves in the Earth's atmosphere are developed, one with the link transmission lines connected in parallel and the other with connections in series.Design/methodology/approachThe equations describing propagation of waves through these parallel or series meshes are equivalent to the Maxwell equations for TEr or TMr modes in a spherical cavity with lossy dielectric material between the external conducting surfaces, respectively.FindingsThe transmission line meshes are used for a numerical study of the natural electromagnetic noise due to lightning discharges in the Earth‐ionosphere cavity.Originality/valueThe numerical algorithm f…

Adapting available finite element structural programs to solve three-dimensional high frequency electromagnetic problems

1991

The adaptation of available structural mechanics software to solve microwave problems is possible by the analogy between the differential equations. A brief review of the analogy between transverse or shear waves in elasticity and electromagnetic waves is presented, followed by a more detailed discussion of the adaptation of a program to obtain the resonant frequencies of a rectangular resonant cavity, doing a three-dimensional analysis. The geometry of the electric field is also obtained for the resonant modes.

Immunity of a Virtual Instrument to conducted electromagnetic disturbances

2004

In the paper the performances of the Virtual Instruments under conducted electromagnetic disturbances are investigated, in order to find out if and how their metrological characteristics change with respect to the ones measured in absence of electromagnetic threats. The analysis is carried out by means of experimental tests, subjecting the AC power port of the systems under test to the conducted disturbances considered by the IEC-61326 standard and following the test procedures prescribed in the IEC-61000-4-series standards. The results show that the tested measurements instruments are sufficiently immune to these disturbances, since no variations of the distinctive parameters have been obs…
