Photonic Crystal‐Driven Spectral Concentration for Upconversion Photovoltaics

2014

The main challenge for applying upconversion (UC) to silicon photovoltaics is the limited amount of solar energy harvested directly via erbium-based upconverter materials (24.5 W m–2). This could be increased up to 87.7 W m–2 via spectral concentration. Due to the nonlinear behavior of UC, this could increase the best UC emission by a factor 13. In this paper, the combined use of quantum dots (QDs)—for luminescent down-shifting—and photonic crystals (PCs)—for reshaping the emission—to achieve spectral concentration is shown. This implies dealing with the coupling of colloidal QDs and PC at the high-density regime, where the modes are shifted and broadened. In the first fabricated all-optica…

Modelling and analysis of the influence of solar spectrum on the efficiency of photovoltaic modules

2021

Abstract The article presents the influence of changes in the solar radiation spectrum distribution on the properties of various photovoltaic modules, with particular emphasis on the scattered component. We compared the relative efficiency of the photovoltaic modules based on various semiconductor absorbers during bright and sunny, and cloudy summer days. Additionally, we presented the impact of the module tilt angle on the magnitude of the surface incident scattered component and on the efficiency of the module. The solar spectra for various weather conditions were estimated using specialised computer programmes, such as SolarSpectrum or SMARTS2, and we present here the validation results f…

Stable two -dimensional spatial solitons in heavy metal oxide glasses

2007

In this Communication, a stable self-confined propagation with ps near-infrared (NIR) pulses and over several Rayleigh lengths is demonstrated for the first time . Multiphoton absorption is shown to saturate the self-focusing response in a novel glass of the ternary system Nb2O5-O2-PbO (NPG) exhibiting a high refractive index (2-2.1) in the NIR and an energy gap of 3.52 eV. NPG belongs to the family of heavy metal oxides, widely studied for its fast and high nonlinearity in the infrared.

Transmission Attenuation Power Ratio Analysis of Flexible Electromagnetic Absorber Sheets Combined with a Metal Layer.

2018

Electromagnetic noise absorber sheets have become a solution for solving complex electromagnetic interference (EMI) problems due to their high magnetic losses. This contribution is focused on characterizing a novel structure that is based on an absorber film with a metal layer attached on its top side. Two different absorber compositions were combined with Al and Cu metal layers in order to study the improvement on the performance of these structures, depending on the complex permeability, absorber film thickness, and type of metal. The transmission attenuation power ratio of the absorber films is analyzed and compared to the performance of absorber and metal structures. The measurement pro…

High-temperature emission spectroscopy of methane

2008

International audience; A high-enthalpy source (HES) has been developed in Rennes either to heat gases up to 2000K in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) or to generate hypersonic expansions. The HES prototype has been associated with a high-resolution Bruker IFS 120 HR Fourier transform spectrometer to record emission spectra of hot gases, in LTE conditions. A series of emission spectra of methane has been obtained at 1005, 1365, 1485, 1625 and 1820K in the pentad spectral region located around 3000 cm1, at Doppler-limited resolution (0.02 cm1). Spectra have been corrected for the transmission function that strongly affects the infrared radiation emitted by the hot gas. Line-integrated a…

Oscillator strengths of sulphur 3s23p34s3So-3s23p34p3P transitions measured by time resolved two-photon laser spectroscopy

1997

Oscillator strengths for the three 3s23p34s 3S1o-3s23p34p 3P0,1,2 transitions in neutral sulphur have been determined directly from lifetime measurements. Two-photon UV laser excitation and subsequent fluorescence detection have been used on atoms produced in a thermal sulphur beam or in a laser-driven plasma. A good agreement was found between data obtained in both schemes. The lifetime data obtained, τ(3P0) = 46.1(1.0) ns, τ(3P1) = 46.1(1.0) ns and τ(3P2) = 46.1(1.0) ns are compared with results of theoretical and experimental data from literature. The absorption oscillator strengths derived are f(3S1o-3P0) = 0.120(0.003), f(3S1o-3P1) = 0.360(0.008) and f(3S1o-3P2) = 0.600(0.013), respect…

Optical rotary power at the resonance of the Terbium 7F6→5D4 line in Terbium Gallium Garnet

1998

Abstract The Tb 3+ absorption line 7 F 6 → 5 D 4 of the Terbium Gallium Garnet crystal is excited with an Argon ion laser. The Verdet's constant has been determined and reported against 1/ λ 2 , showing no significant resonant behaviour at absorption resonance. The utility and the constraints of the crystal at this particular resonant wavelength are pointed out.

Selective Photocatalytic Oxidation of 4-Methoxybenzyl Alcohol to p-Anisaldehyde in Organic-Free Water in a Continuous Annular Fixed Bed Reactor

2007

Photocatalytic oxidation of 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol to p-anisaldehyde was performed in water organic-free solutions by using a fixed bed continuous photoreactor containing Pyrex beads on which a TiO2 home prepared photocatalyst was supported. The influence of liquid flow rate, inlet alcohol concentration and catalyst amount on the photoprocess was studied. The highest selectivity to p-anisaldehyde was about 47% being CO2, the other main oxidation product; traces of 4-methoxybenzoic acid were also detected. The radiation field inside the photoreactor has been modelled by applying the Monte Carlo method thus allowing the determination of the local volumetric rate of photon absorption (LVRPA).…

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency and optical pumping processes formed in Cs sub-micron thin cell

2012

Abstract The Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) effect in a Λ -system formed by Cs atoms (6 S 1/2  − 6 P 3/2  − 6 S 1/2 ) confined in an extremely thin cell (ETC) (atomic column thickness L varies in the range of 800 nm –3 µm is studied both experimentally and theoretically. It is demonstrated that when the coupling laser frequency is in exact resonance with the corresponding atomic transition, the EIT resonance parameters weakly depend on L , which allows us to detect the effect at L  =  λ  = 852 nm. EIT process reveals a striking peculiarity in case of the coupling laser detuned by Δ from the atomic transition, namely the width of the EIT resonance rapidly increases upon an in…
