Angular and lateral spreading of ion beams in biomedical nuclear microscopy

2009

Abstract Nuclear scattering from target atoms gives rise to a spatial broadening of energetic ion beams penetrating matter. The spatial broadening of the ion beam presents an ultimate limit to the resolving power that can be achieved in nuclear microscopy methods. The pressing of the attainable resolution limit in biomedical nuclear microscopy to dimensions approaching 10 nm, or so, implies the fundamental limitation from ion-target scattering will become increasingly significant. This effect has been investigated by a combined analytical and numerical computational approach to determine the extent and how single and multiple scattering processes limit the resolution for analysis with 2 MeV…

A gas-jet apparatus for high-resolution laser spectroscopy on the heaviest elements at SHIP

2020

© 2019 Elsevier B.V. Laser spectroscopy enables the determination of fundamental atomic and nuclear properties with high precision. In view of the low production rates of the heaviest elements, a high total efficiency is a crucial requirement for any experimental setup to be used in on-line experiments. The setup requires the use of gas stopping techniques to slow down the radionuclides of interest. In previous studies laser spectroscopy was performed inside a gas-filled stopping cell with a limited spectral resolution of a few GHz. Collisional broadening inside stopping cells ultimately limits the precision of laser spectroscopic studies and hampers in particular hyperfine spectroscopy. Th…

Energy calibration of the NEXT-White detector with 1% resolution near Q ββ of 136Xe

2019

Excellent energy resolution is one of the primary advantages of electroluminescent high pressure xenon TPCs, and searches for rare physics events such as neutrinoless double-beta decay ($\beta\beta0\nu$) require precise energy measurements. Using the NEXT-White detector, developed by the NEXT (Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon TPC) collaboration, we show for the first time that an energy resolution of 1% FWHM can be achieved at 2.6 MeV, establishing the present technology as the one with the best energy resolution of all xenon detectors for $\beta\beta0\nu$ searches.

Detector characterization and first coincidence tests of a Compton telescope based on LaBr3 crystals and SiPMs

2011

International audience; A Compton telescope for dose monitoring in hadron therapy consisting of several layers of continuous LaBr3 crystals coupled to silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays is under development within the ENVISION project. In order to test the possibility of employing such detectors for the telescope, a detector head consisting of a continuous 16 mm×18 mm×5 mm LaBr3 crystal coupled to a SiPM array has been assembled and characterized, employing the SPIROC1 ASIC as readout electronics. The best energy resolution obtained at 511 keV is 6.5% FWHM and the timing resolution is 3.1 ns FWHM. A position determination method for continuous crystals is being tested, with promising res…

Efficiency and timing performance of the MuPix7 high-voltage monolithic active pixel sensor

2018

The MuPix7 is a prototype high voltage monolithic active pixel sensor with 103 times 80 um2 pixels thinned to 64 um and incorporating the complete read-out circuitry including a 1.25 Gbit/s differential data link. Using data taken at the DESY electron test beam, we demonstrate an efficiency of 99.3% and a time resolution of 14 ns. The efficiency and time resolution are studied with sub-pixel resolution and reproduced in simulations.

A gas ionisation Direct-STIM detector for MeV ion microscopy

2015

Abstract Direct-Scanning Transmission Ion Microscopy (Direct-STIM) is a powerful technique that yields structural information in sub-cellular whole cell imaging. Usually, a Si p-i-n diode is used in Direct-STIM measurements as a detector. In order to overcome the detrimental effects of radiation damage which appears as a broadening in the energy resolution, we have developed a gas ionisation detector for use with a focused ion beam. The design is based on the ETH Frisch grid-less off-axis Geiger–Muller geometry. It is developed for use in a MeV ion microscope with a standard Oxford Microbeams triplet lens and scanning system. The design has a large available solid angle for other detectors …

Design, construction and performance of the energy compressing system of the Mainz 300 MeV electron linac

1973

Abstract For the sake of better energy resolution of the 300 MeV electron linac of Mainz university a system has been built which transforms a sharply bunched beam of poor energy resolution into a beam of sharply defined energy, while its bunches are smeared out. The system is described, its design philosophy and some essential construction details are given. The operating experience of the last 6 months since completion of the system is communicated.

Messungen am Po214 γ-Spektrum mit einem Ge(Li)-Paar-Spektrometer

1969

Theγ-ray spectrum of Po214 between energies of 1.1 and 3.3 MeV was measured with a resolution of 4–5 keV. The energies and intensities of 69γ-rays are tabulated and an improved level scheme of the Bi214-Po214 decay is proposed.
