Solution nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy on a nanostructured diamond chip

2017

We demonstrate nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of picoliter-volume solutions with a nanostructured diamond chip. Using optical interferometric lithography, diamond surfaces were nanostructured with dense, high-aspect-ratio nanogratings, enhancing the surface area by more than a factor of 15 over mm^2 regions of the chip. The nanograting sidewalls were doped with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers so that more than 10 million NV centers in a (25 micrometer)^2 laser spot are located close enough to the diamond surface (5 nm) to detect the NMR spectrum of 1 pL of fluid lying within adjacent nanograting grooves. The platform was used to perform 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopy at room tempe…

Magnetic and magnetoelastic properties of epitaxial (2 1 1)-oriented RFe2 (R=Dy, Tb) thin films

2005

Abstract Epitaxial, (2 1 1)-oriented thin films of RFe 2 (R: rare earth; here: Dy, Tb) were deposited by molecular beam epitaxy on faceted and non-faceted α - Al 2 O 3 ( 1 0 1 ¯ 0 ) (m-plane) substrates utilizing a 15 A thin Fe seed layer and a 500 A Nb buffer layer. Detailed X-ray diffraction analyses revealed a twin-free epitaxial (2 1 1)-oriented growth of buffer layer and film. The magnetostrictive layer RFe 2 , as well as the template layers Nb and Mo exhibited the same crystallographic in-plane orientation with regard to the substrate. The same epitaxial relationship was found for films prepared on faceted and on non-faceted substrates. This implies a coherent crystal overgrowth of th…

The influence of erdosteine administration on lead-induced oxidative stress in rat muscle.

2019

Lead-exposure is known to disrupt the redox balance of tissues leading to oxidative stress. Due to the fact that a mucolytic drug, erdosteine, exerts also antioxidant properties, we decided to perform a pilot study on rats to evaluate its therapeutic potency in lead poisoning. Male Wistar rats were divided randomly into the following seven groups having 10 animals in each. Group I served as the control group. During 8-week period, rats in groups II-IV, except standard alimentation, received: erdosteine in a dose 350 mg/kg (collateral control group), 1200 ppm of lead acetate in drinking water and placebo, as well as the same doses of lead and erdosteine, respectively. Rats in group V-VII rec…

European Clinical Experience with a Dual Chamber Single Pass Sensing and Pacing Defibrillation Lead

2002

Dual chamber ICDs are increasingly implanted nowadays, mainly to improve discrimination between supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias but also to maintain AV synchrony in patients with bradycardia. The aim of this study was to investigate a new single pass right ventricular defibrillation lead capable of true bipolar sensing and pacing in the right atrium and integrated bipolar sensing and pacing in the right ventricle. The performance of the lead was evaluated in 57 patients (age 61 +/- 12 years; New York Heart Association 1.9 +/- 0.6, left ventricular ejection fraction 0.38 +/- 0.15) at implant, at prehospital discharge, and during a 1-year follow-up. Sensing and pacing behavior of…

Single mechano-gated channels activated by mechanical deformation of acutely isolated cardiac fibroblasts from rats

2010

Aim Mechanosensitive conductances were reported in cardiac fibroblasts, but the properties of single channels mediating their mechanosensitivity remain uncharacterized. The aim of this work was to investigate single mechano-gated channels (MGCs) activated by mechanical deformations of cardiac fibroblasts. Methods Currents through single MGCs and mechanosensitive whole-cell currents were recorded from isolated rat atrial fibroblasts using the cell-attached and whole-cell patch-clamp configurations respectively. Defined mechanical stress was applied via the patch pipette used for the whole-cell recordings. Results Under resting conditions occasional short openings of two types of single MGCs …

Patient Alert to detect ICD lead failure: efficacy, limitations, and implications for future algorithms.

2006

Aims An algorithm that alerts implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) patients, in case of abnormal lead impedance (Patient Alert™, Medtronic), may help to recognize lead dysfunction. We aimed to determine the utility of Patient Alert for ICD lead-failure detection in a prospective study. Methods and results Three hundred and sixty ICD patients were followed for 22±14 months. Patient Alert was active for pacing impedance 2000–3000 Ω, and high-voltage conductor impedance 200 Ω. Ten alert events and a total of 29 severe system complications occurred. Patient Alert detected three of 10 ICD lead failures, with a positive predictive value (PPV) of 77.8% for any severe system complication. R…

Can't simply roll it out: Evaluating a real-world virtual reality intervention to reduce driving under the influence.

2020

Driving under the influence (DUI) increases the risk of crashes. Emerging technologies, such as virtual reality (VR), represent potentially powerful and attractive tools for the prevention of risky behaviours, such as DUI. Therefore, they are embraced in prevention efforts with VR interventions primed to grow in popularity in near future. However, little is known about the actual effectiveness of such DUI-targeting VR interventions. To help fill the knowledge gap, this study explored the effects of one VR intervention as delivered in the real world. Using pre and post test design, including an intervention group (n = 98) and a control group (n = 39), the intervention evaluation examined you…

Accelerometer-assessed sedentary work, leisure time and cardio-metabolic biomarkers during one year : Effectiveness of a cluster randomized controlle…

2017

BackgroundIt is unknown whether reducing sedentary time at work and during leisure time is possible and effective during one year.MethodsOffice workers with young children were recruited for this one-year cluster-randomized controlled trial through kindergartens and primary schools from 7 clusters in the city of Jyväskylä, Finland. After a lecture, face-to-face tailored counseling was used to set contractually binding goals regarding reducing and breaking up sitting periods and increasing light intensity physical activity during work and leisure time. Primary outcomes of total, work and leisure sedentary time (ResultsParticipants from intervention (N = 71) and control (N = 62) regions were …
