Isolated Mn-12 single-molecule magnets grafted on gold surfaces via electrostatic interactions

2005

Electrostatic interactions drive the adsorption of polycationic single-molecule magnets onto anionic monolayers self-assembled on gold surfaces. Well-isolated magnetic clusters have been deposited and characterized using scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy.

Innovative remotely-controlled bending device for thin silicon and germanium crystals

2020

Steering of negatively charged particle beams below 1 GeV has demonstrated to be possible with thin bent silicon and germanium crystals. A newly designed mechanical holder was used for bending crystals, since it allows a remotely-controlled adjustment of crystal bending and compensation of unwanted torsion. Bent crystals were installed and tested at the MAMI Mainz MIcrotron to achieve steering of 0.855-GeV electrons at different bending radii. We report the description and characterization of the innovative bending device developed at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (LNL).

Experimental evidence on photo-assisted O$^-$ ion production from Al$_2$O$_3$ cathode in cesium sputter negative ion source

2020

The production of negative ions in cesium sputter ion sources is generally considered to be a pure surface process. It has been recently proposed that ion pair production could explain the higher-than-expected beam currents extracted from these ion sources, therefore opening the door for laser-assisted enhancement of the negative ion yield. We have tested this hypothesis by measuring the effect of various pulsed diode lasers on the O$^-$ beam current produced from Al$_2$O$_3$ cathode of a cesium sputter ion source. It is expected that the ion pair production of O$^-$ requires populating the 5d electronic states of neutral cesium, thus implying that the process should be provoked only with s…

Perspective: Polarizable continuum models for quantum-mechanical descriptions

2016

Polarizable continuum solvation models are nowadays the most popular approach to describe solvent effects in the context of quantum mechanical calculations. Unexpectedly, despite their widespread use in all branches of quantum chemistry and beyond, important aspects of both their theoretical formulation and numerical implementation are still not completely understood. In particular, in this perspective we focus on the numerical issues of their implementation when applied to large systems and on the theoretical framework needed to treat time dependent problems and excited states or to deal with electronic correlation. Possible extensions beyond a purely electrostatic model and generalization…

Restoring of A balance by electric pulses

2004

Restoring of the balance beam to its initial situation after a change of load can be effected by combination of forces of different kind. In former papers we discussed the possibility using the equation of motion of the balance to determine the mass to be measured. After the measurement the balance was restored by means of current pulses into the electromagnetic measuring system. In the present paper we discuss the application of electric pulses into an additional electrostatic system.

Revised periodic boundary conditions: Fundamentals, electrostatics, and the tight-binding approximation

2011

Many nanostructures today are low-dimensional and flimsy, and therefore get easily distorted. Distortion-induced symmetry-breaking makes conventional, translation-periodic simulations invalid, which has triggered developments for new methods. Revised periodic boundary conditions (RPBC) is a simple method that enables simulations of complex material distortions, either classically or quantum-mechanically. The mathematical details of this easy-to-implement approach, however, have not been discussed before. Therefore, in this paper we summarize the underlying theory, present the practical details of RPBC, especially related to a non-orthogonal tight-binding formulation, discuss selected featur…

Multipolar expansion of the electrostatic interaction between charged colloids at interfaces

2007

The general form of the electrostatic potential around an arbitrarily charged colloid at an interface between a dielectric and a screening phase (such as air and water, respectively) is analyzed in terms of a multipole expansion. The leading term is isotropic in the interfacial plane and varies with $d^{-3}$ where $d$ is the in--plane distance from the colloid. The electrostatic interaction potential between two arbitrarily charged colloids is likewise isotropic and $\propto d^{-3}$, corresponding to the dipole--dipole interaction first found for point charges at water interfaces. Anisotropic interaction terms arise only for higher powers $d^{-n}$ with $n \ge 4$.

A combination intermediate-image magnetic plus Si(Li) electron spectrometer for in-beam experiments

1979

Abstract A magnetic lens plus Si(Li) combination in-beam beta spectrometer with focusing properties and field shape similar to those of an intermediate-image spectrometer is described. A high transmission and a large momentum band-width are achieved by placing both the target and the detector in a high magnetic field inside the lens. The beam enters the lens axially, and the Faraday cup is placed inside the lens. The spectrometer is well suited to singles conversion-electron spectroscopy, to electron-heavy particle coincidence measurements, to lifetime measurements and to studies of internal-pair transitions.

Search for an electric charge of the neutron

2018

The electrical neutrality of the neutron is linked to the electric charge quantization. It is not understood yet if the electric charge is quantized or not. Since the discovery of the neutron, many attempts have been made to measure its electric charge ${q}_{n}$ directly and indirectly. We present a method to search for a possible ${q}_{n}$ by means of an optical setup using ultracold neutrons. In a first run, a statistical sensitivity of $\ensuremath{\delta}{q}_{n}=2.4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}20}\text{ }\text{ }e/\sqrt{\mathrm{day}}$ is achieved. Possible improvements to increase this sensitivity down to $\ensuremath{\delta}{q}_{n}\ensuremath{\approx}1\ifmmode\…

Effect of reactant spatial distribution in theA+B→0reaction kinetics in one dimension with Coulomb interaction

1996

The effect of nonequilibrium charge screening in the kinetics of the one-dimensional, diffusion-controlled $A+B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ reaction between charged reactants in solids and liquids is studied. The incorrectness of the static, Debye-H\"uckel theory is shown. Our microscopic formalism is based on the Kirkwood superposition approximation for three-particle densities and the self-consistent treatment of the electrostatic interactions defined by the nonuniform spatial distribution of similar and dissimilar reactants treated in terms of the relevant joint correlation functions. Special attention is paid to the pattern formation due to a reaction-induced non-Poissonian fluctuation sp…
