Altered cellular calcium responsiveness to insulin in normal and hypertensive pregnancy.

Objective To investigate the glucose-independent calcium-related effects of insulin from subjects with normal and hypertensive pregnancies. Method We used lndo-l fluorescence spectroscopy to measure cytosolic free calcium levels (Cai) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBM) from 17 women (aged 20-40 years), six nonpregnant controls (NPC), five pregnant normotensive (PNT) women and six pregnant hypertensive (PHT) women, before and 5, 30, 60, 120 and 180 min after in vitro incubation with 200 microU/ml insulin. Effect of biomass features on oxygen transfer in conventional activated sludge and membrane bioreactor systems

Abstract The aim of the present study was to compare the oxygen transfer efficiency in a conventional activated sludge and a membrane bioreactor system. The oxygen transfer was evaluated by means of the oxygen transfer coefficient and α-factor calculation, under different total suspended solids concentration, extracellular polymeric substances, sludge apparent viscosity and size of the flocs. Aerobic reaction of a hexadentate redox-active o-aminophenol-based ligand, H4L(3) = N,N'-bis(2-hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)-2,2'-diamino(diphenyldithio)-ethane, in CH3OH with Ni(II)(O2CCH3)2·4H2O and Et3N afforded isolation of a reddish-brown crystalline solid [Ni(L(3))] 1. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiment exhibits two oxidative responses at E1/2 = 0.09 and 0.53 V vs SCE (saturated calomel electrode). In this paper, we present an online coupling of gel electrophoresis (GE) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for the determination of iodine species (iodide and iodate) in liquid (seawater) and aerosol samples. For the first time, this approach is applied to the analysis of small molecules, and initial systematic investigations revealed that the migration behavior as well as the detection sensitivity strongly depends on the matrix (e.g., high concentrations of chloride). Enhanced Role of Transition Metal Ion Catalysis During In-Cloud Oxidation of SO2

Global sulfate production plays a key role in aerosol radiative forcing; more than half of this production occurs in clouds. We found that sulfur dioxide oxidation catalyzed by natural transition metal ions is the dominant in-cloud oxidation pathway. The pathway was observed to occur primarily on coarse mineral dust, so the sulfate produced will have a short lifetime and little direct or indirect climatic effect. Taking this into account will lead to large changes in estimates of the magnitude and spatial distribution of aerosol forcing. Aggressive behavior towards football referees is becoming increasingly common, and as a result we are getting used to it and coming to see it as an inevitable and intrinsic element of football matches. Spectators, players and coaches are all prone to take this view. Abstract Modification of aluminium alloy substrates microstructure and morphology by depositing new oxide layers on top of the metal surface has been investigated, with the aim of improving adhesion. The effect of treating the metal with boiling water or immersing it in a cerate bath has been studied by means of electron microscopy, contact angle measurements and peeling tests. Repetitive DNA sequences represent about half of the human genome. They have a central role in human biology, especially neurobiology, but are notoriously difficult to study. The purpose of this study was to quantify the transcription from repetitive sequences in a progerin-expressing cellular model of neuronal aging. Progerin is a nuclear protein causative of the Hutchinson–Gilford progeria syndrome that is also incrementally expressed during the normal aging process.
