Explicit Kutta Condition for Unsteady Two-Dimensional High-Order Potential Boundary Element Method

1997

An explicit unsteady pressure Kutta condition is discribed that was directly and efficiently implemented in a time domain high-order potential panel method so as to ensure the pressure equality on the upper and lower surfaces at the trailing edge of the airfoil at each time step.

Selective recovery of phosphorus as AlPO4 from silicon-free CFB-derived fly ash leachate

2018

The prospect of phosphorus (P) recovery from siliceous fly ash was investigated. The phosphorus content in the pristine fly ash was 1.21%. Obtaining pure phosphorus products from fly ash is very challenging because of high concentration of other elements, silicon (Si) at 17.3% being the major contaminant. The fly ash was fractionated with sieve size of 125 μm to concentrate the phosphorus in the small-size fraction, which also facilitated the removal of 78% of silica (Si) in the solid phase. The fractionated fly ash was treated with 8 M HCl in order to remove 98% of Si by aging (5 h) of leachate until precipitation of Si-gel, and a phosphorus-rich solution is obtained. Iron (Fe) is also con…

ESR response to gamma-rays of alanine pellets containing B(OH)3 or Gd2O3.

2007

ESR response to gamma-irradiation (1-50 Gy) of blends containing alanine and either B(OH)(3) or Gd(2)O(3) is reported. The sensitivity of the alanine--B(OH)(3) blend is comparable to the sensitivity of pure alanine, although its lowest detectable dose, LDD, is smaller ( approximately 1.3 Gy) than that of pure alanine ( approximately 2.9 Gy). Alanine with Gd(2)O(3) is about two times more sensitive than pure alanine, and its LDD is 0.8 Gy. The better sensitivity and LDD are probably due to the high atomic number (Z=64) of gadolinium, which enhances the interaction probability with photons and, consequently, the radical yield. This study suggests that other high-Z atoms may be useful for incr…

Comparison of EPR response of alanine and Gd2O3-alanine dosimeters exposed to TRIGA Mainz reactor.

2015

In this work we report some preliminary results regarding the analysis of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) response of alanine pellets and alanine pellets added with gadolinium used for dosimetry at the TRIGA research reactor in Mainz, Germany. Two set-ups were evaluated: irradiation inside PMMA phantom and irradiation inside boric acid phantom. We observed that the presence of Gd2O3 inside alanine pellets increases the EPR signal by a factor of 3.45 and 1.24 in case of PMMA and boric acid phantoms, respectively. We can conclude that in the case of neutron beam with a predominant thermal neutron component the addition of gadolinium oxide can significantly improve neutron sensitivity of…

Sometimes less is more—the impact of the number of His residues on the stability of Zn(ii)–SmtB and BigR4 α-5 domain complexes

2021

The increasing number of antibiotic-resistant pathogens has become one of the major health problems of modern times, including infections caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. One of the possible mammalian immune system responses to mycobacterial infection is the increase of the zinc(II) concentration in phagosomes to a toxic level. The mycobacterial SmtB protein belongs to the family of ArsR/SmtB transcription regulators. In the presence of high concentrations of metals, SmtB dissociates from DNA and activates the expression of metal efflux proteins. In this work, we focus on the α5 zinc(II) binding domains of SmtB/BigR4 proteins (the latter being the SmtB homolog from non-pathogenic M. sm…

Arithmetical Analysis of Biomolecular Finite Automaton

2013

In the paper we present a theoretical analysis of extension of the finite automaton built on DNA (introduced by the Shapiro team) to an arbitrary number of states and symbols. In the implementation we use a new idea of several restriction enzymes instead of one. We give arithmetical conditions for the existence of such extensions in terms of ingredients used in the implementation.

Conditioning on MV-algebras and additive measures —I

1997

Abstract We present a lattice-ordered semigroup approach for the foundation of conditional events which covers the special situations where the underlying (unconditional) events are Boolean or fuzzy, respectively. Our proposal is quite different from other, ring theoretical, approaches. The problem of extending additivity of uncertainty measures from unconditional to conditional events will be discussed.
