Mechanism of co-pyrolysis of coal-tar pitch with polyacrylonitrile

2003

Abstract Co-pyrolysis of coal-tar pitch with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and PAN oxidized in air at 300 °C was studied as a possible way of manufacturing of carbonaceous materials enriched in nitrogen. The thermal behaviour of components and blends was evaluated by thermogravimetry and optical microscopy of solid residues. The transformation of nitrogen functional groups on co-treatment was monitored using elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Oxidized polymer behaved as an inert during co-pyrolysis. In contrast, strong interactions of unoxidized PAN with pitch could be deduced from enhanced residue yield and extensive deterioration of the optical textu…

Physical chemistry of the powder metallurgy of beryllium: Chemical characterization of the powder in relation to its granularity

1996

Combining the systematic quantitative chemical analysis of the light impurities H, C, N, and O, the quantitative thermal desorption of molecular H2O and H2, and X ray diffractometry of various size fractions of a commercial Be powder (SP-65 grade from Brush-Wellman) allowed the precise de-termination of the mean composition and equivalent mean thickness of the surface impurity phases in the passivation-contamination layer on the surface of the particles. The overall surface stoichi-ometry is as follows: 0.2 BeOcrystallized, 0.8 [BeO - 0.59 H2O]amorphous, 0.14 H2Oads The result of the elemental analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of the unetched surface of a powder pellet is compare…

Missions to Mars: Characterization of Mars analogue rocks for the International Space Analogue Rockstore (ISAR)

2013

International audience; Instruments for surface missions to extraterrestrial bodies should be cross-calibrated using a common suite of relevant materials. Such work is necessary to improve instrument performance and aids in the interpretation of in-situ measurements. At the CNRS campus in Orléans, the Observatoire des Sciences de l'Univers en région Centre (OSUC) has created a collection of well-characterised rocks and minerals for testing and calibrating instruments to be flown in space missions. The characteristics of the analogue materials are documented in an accompanying online database. In view of the recent and upcoming rover missions to Mars (NASA's 2011 Mars Science Laboratory (MSL…

Bond strength and elemental analysis of oxidized dentin bonded to resin modified glass ionomer based restorative material

2019

Background This study aimed to investigate the influence of hesperidin application on the bonding of resin-modified glass ionomer-based restorative material to dentin treated with oxygen-induced endodontic irrigants. Material and Methods One hundred human permanent molars were categorized into five groups (n= 20/group), treated with various irrigants as follows: Group C; distilled water (control group), Group SH; 5.25% NaOCl, Group SH+H; 5.25% NaOCl + 5 % hesperidin, Group HP; 10% H2O2, Group HP+H; 10% H2O2 + 5 % hesperidin. Specimens were bonded with RMGI based restorative material. For each group, half of the specimens were evaluated for µSBS by a universal testing machine and the other h…

The miniaturised Mössbauer spectrometer MIMOS IIA: Increased sensitivity and new capability for elemental analysis

2010

The Miniaturised Mossbauer Spectrometers MIMOS II on board the two Mars Exploration Rovers (MER) have now been collecting valuable scientific data for more than five years. Mossbauer Spectrometers are part of two future missions: Phobos Grunt (Russian Space Agency) and a joint ESA—NASA Rover in 2018. The new advanced MIMOS IIA instrument described in this paper uses Silicon Drift Detectors (SDD) allowing also X-ray fluorescence chemical analysis (XRF) simultaneously to Mossbauer acquisitions. This paper highlights the features and technological improvements of the new spectrometer MIMOS IIA.

An Active X-Ray Spectrometer for the SELENE-2 Rover

2014

The Active X-ray Spectrometer (AXS) for the Japanese SELENE-2 rover has been proposed for elemental analysis on the lunar surface to measure the major elements: Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, and Fe; the minor elements, Na, K, P, S, Cl, Cr, and Mn and the trace element Ni, all depending on their concentrations at a landing site. The elemental data of the AXS allow us to not only classification but also quantification of surface rocks on the Moon. The AXS is a compact low-weight instrument for elemental analysis based on the principle of X-ray fluorescence spectrometry using an X-ray spectrometer and two (four) pyroelectric crystals as X-Ray Generators (XRG). This paper introduces the current status of…

A practical ethylene polymerization for vinyl-polyethylenes: synthesis, characterization and catalytic behavior of α,α’-bisimino-2,3:5,6- bis(pentame…

2016

A series of α,α′-bis(arylimino)-2,3:5,6-bis(pentamethylene)pyridyliron chlorides was synthesized in a one-pot reaction and characterized by FT-IR and elemental analysis as well as X-ray crystallography for one representative iron complex, where the Fe center adopts a distorted square pyramidal geometry with three coordinating nitrogen and two chlorine atoms. The iron precatalysts, upon treatment with either methylaluminoxane (MAO) or modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO), exhibit high activities in the range of 107 g of PE per mol of Fe per h toward ethylene polymerization, yielding highly linear and, more importantly, vinyl-polyethylenes. The correlation between the structural features of iron…

Estuarine sediment quality assessment by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy

2010

Partial least squares Fourier-transform infrared (PLS-FTIR) models were developed for the quality assessment of estuarine sediments through the evaluation of several physico-chemical parameters. Models were based on the chemometric treatment of attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectra directly obtained from samples previously lyophilized and sieved through a lower than 63 μm grid. Spectra were scanned from 3997 to 523 cm-1, averaging 36 scans per spectrum with a nominal resolution of 8 cm-1. Models were built using reference data obtained for sediment samples collected from Ria de Arousa estuary. Hierarchical cluster classification of sediment ATR spectra was employed for the establishment…
