Evidence for molecular-cluster states in222Th

1983

The groundstate and a negative parity band of222Th have been observed in the208Pb (180, 4n)222Th reaction by conversion electron and γ-ray spectroscopy identifying the evaporation residues in a recoil separator. The de-excitation pattern is characterized by strong El transitions interconnecting the levels of alternating parity. The yrast levels may be interpreted as a molecularcluster band.

Polarizability effects in electronic and muonic atoms

1983

TheS state polarizability shifts are derived from the virtual forward Compton scattering in the unretarded dipole approximation. In the non-relativistic limit ω N /2m≪1, the shift is proportional to the photonuclear sum rule σ−3/2, while in the relativistic limit ω N /2m≫1 it is proportional to a logarithmically weighted σ−2 sum rule. In both cases, the characteristic momentum transfer is (2mω N )1/2. The non-locality from the intermediate lepton propagation removes the divergence typical of the static limit. Explicit formulas for the shifts are given for both the relativistic and non-relativistic limits.

Nuclear charge radii of the tin isotopes from muonic atoms.

1990

The muonic atom 2${\mathit{p}}_{1/2}$-1${\mathit{s}}_{1/2}$ and 2${\mathit{p}}_{3/2}$-1${\mathit{s}}_{1/2}$ transition energies were measured with an experimental accuracy of better than 20 ppm for the isotope chain $^{112,114,116,117,118,119,120,122,124}\mathrm{Sn}$. Precise values for the Barrett equivalent nuclear radii ${\mathit{R}}_{\mathit{k}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}$ and their differences as well as root-mean-square radii were deduced. The \ensuremath{\Delta}N=2 isotope shifts between the even Sn isotopes show a subshell effect at the neutron number N=64. Otherwise, there is a nearly linear decrease with increasing N, in accordance with the general systematics of nuclear charge r…

Longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A1p and spin-dependent structure function g1p of the proton at small values of x and Q2

2018

Abstract We present a precise measurement of the proton longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A 1 p and the proton spin-dependent structure function g 1 p at photon virtualities 0.006 ( GeV / c ) 2 Q 2 1 ( GeV / c ) 2 in the Bjorken x range of 4 × 10 − 5 x 4 × 10 − 2 . The results are based on data collected by the COMPASS Collaboration at CERN using muon beam energies of 160 GeV and 200 GeV . The statistical precision is more than tenfold better than that of the previous measurement in this region. In the whole range of x , the measured values of A 1 p and g 1 p are found to be positive. It is for the first time that spin effects are found at such low values of x .

Finite-size effects and collective vibrations in the inner crust of neutron stars

2010

We study the linear response of the inner crust of neutron stars within the Random Phase Approximation, employing a Skyrme-type interaction as effective interaction. We adopt the Wigner-Seitz approximation, and consider a single unit cell of the Coulomb lattice which constitutes the inner crust, with a nucleus at its center, surrounded by a sea of free neutrons. With the use of an appropriate operator, it is possible to analyze in detail the properties of the vibrations of the surface of the nucleus and their interaction with the modes of the sea of free neutrons, and to investigate the role of shell effects and of resonant states.

The g-factor of the J?=12+ isomeric state in188Hg

1983

Using the reaction175Lu(19F, 6n) theg-factor of the188Hg isomeric state (Jπ=12+,T1/2=135 ns) has been measured with the TDPAD method. The experimental value g=−0.168(10) supports the interpretation of an almost pure (vi13/2)−2 configuration for this isomer.

Measurements ofΛc+branching fractions of Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes involvingΛandΣ0

2007

We measure the branching ratios of the Cabibbo-suppressed decays $\Lambda^+_c$ $\to$ $\Lambda$ $K^+$ and $\Lambda^+_c$ $\to$ $\Sigma^{0}$ $K^+$ %(measured with improved accuracy). relative to the Cabibbo-favored decay modes $\Lambda^+_c$ $\to$ $\Lambda$ $\pi^+$ and $\Lambda^+_c$ $\to$ $\Sigma^{0}$ $\pi^+$ to be $ 0.044 \pm 0.004 ~(\textnormal{stat.})~ \pm ~0.003 \~(\textnormal{syst.})$ and $ 0.039~ \pm ~0.005 ~(\textnormal{stat.})~ \pm \~0.003 ~(\textnormal{syst.})$, respectively. We set an upper limit on the branching ratio at 90 % confidence level for $\Lambda^+_c$ $\to$ $\Lambda$ $K^+ \pi^+ \pi^-$ to be $ 4.1 \times ~10^{-2}$ relative to $\Lambda^+_c$ $\to$ $\Lambda$ $\pi^+$ and for $\La…

Study of the K±→π±γγ decay by the NA62 experiment

2014

Abstract A study of the dynamics of the rare decay K ± → π ± γ γ has been performed on a sample of 232 decay candidates, with an estimated background of 17.4 ± 1.1 events, collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2007. The results are combined with those from a measurement conducted by the NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN. The combined model-independent branching ratio in the kinematic range z = ( m γ γ / m K ) 2 > 0.2 is B MI ( z > 0.2 ) = ( 0.965 ± 0.063 ) × 10 − 6 , and the combined branching ratio in the full kinematic range assuming a Chiral Perturbation Theory description is B ( K π γ γ ) = ( 1.003 ± 0.056 ) × 10 − 6 . A detailed comparison of the results with the previous measurements…

Measurement of the cross section forW-boson production in association with jets inpp¯collisions ats=1.96  TeV

2008

We present a measurement of the cross section for W-boson production in association with jets in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV. The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 320 pb{sup -1} collected with the CDF II detector. W bosons are identified in their electron decay channel and jets are reconstructed using a cone algorithm. For each W + {ge} n-jet sample (n = 1-4) we measure {sigma}(p{bar p} {yields} W + {ge} n-jet) x {Beta}(W {yields} e{nu}) with respect to the transverse energy E{sub T} of the nth-highest E{sub T} jet above 20 GeV, for a restricted W {yields} e{nu} decay phase space. The cross sections, corrected for all detector effects…

Measurement of the ratio using event shape variables

1993

Abstract The branching fraction of Z → b b relative to all hadronic decays of the Z has been measured using event shape variables to preferentially select Z → b b events. The method chosen applies a combination of shape discriminators and the selection of high transverse momentum leptons to event hemispheres. From a sample of 440 000 hadronic Z decays collected with the ALEPH detector at LEP, the ration Γ b b Γ had = 0.228±0.005( stat. )±0.005( syst. ) is measured.
