The self-couplings of vector bosons: does LEP-1 obviate LEP-2?

Abstract Theories beyond the standard model (“meta-theories”) are severely constrained by the current body of data and must necessarily respect the standard gauge symmetry. We analyze the constraints on two generic types of meta-theory, in which fundamental scalar do or do not exist. The novel low-energy effects can be comprehensively described by grafting onto the standard lagrangian new operators that - in the sense of a Taylor expansion - form a complete set. Completeness calls for consideration of previously discarded operators, and for a thorough exploitation of the equations of motion. A precise measurement of ΓZ→bb/ΓZ→hadrons

A measurement of the partial width ratio Γbb/Γhad using a method which tags the Z --> bb decays through the lif etime of the produced heavy hadrons is presented. This method relies on the tracking precision afforded by a double-sided silicon vertex detector. The tag algorithm makes a probabilistic interpretation of three-dimensional track impact parameters, using the data to measure the resolution. By tagging the two b hadrons separately, both Γbb/Γhad and the tag efficiency can be determined from the data. For a 26% efficiency of tagging a single b hadron within the vertex detector solid angle coverage, a purity of 96% is achieved. A value of Γbb/Γhad = 0.2192+/-0.0026(stat.)+/-0.0016(Γcc/…

Solar neutrinos as probes of neutrino–matter interactions

Data from solar neutrino and KamLAND experiments have led to a discovery of nonzero neutrino masses. Here we investigate what these data can tell us about neutrino interactions with matter, including the poorly constrained flavor-changing nu_e-nu_tau interactions. We give examples of the interaction parameters that are excluded by the solar/KamLAND data and are beyond the reach of other experiments. We also demonstrate that flavor-changing interactions, at the allowed level, may profoundly modify the conversion probability for neutrinos of energy <~ 6 MeV and the values of the mass parameter inferred from the data. The implications for future experiments are discussed.

Can OPERA help in constraining neutrino non-standard interactions?

We study how much the unique ability of the OPERA experiment to directly detect \nu_\tau can help in probing new, non-standard contact interactions of the third family of neutrinos. We perform a combined analysis of future, high-statistics MINOS and OPERA data. For the case of non-standard interactions in \nu_\mu to \nu_e transitions we also include the impact of possible DoubleCHOOZ data. In all cases we find that the \nu_\tau sample of OPERA is too small to be statistically significant, even if one doubles the nominal exposure of OPERA to 4.5E20 pot. OPERA's real benefit for this measurement lies in its very high neutrino energy and hence very different L/E compared to MINOS.

The strong CP problem and the solar neutrino puzzle: Are they related?

We discuss the possibility that a solution of the strong CP problem via the introduction of a chiral U(1), a la Peccei-Quinn, may also provide a natural scenario for explaining the apparent depletion of the solar neutrino flux through matter enhanced neutrino oscillations. The smallness of the neutrino masses is related to the scale at which the U(1)PQ symmetry is spontaneously broken, without introducing right-handed neutrino fields and invoking the see-saw mechanism. The model is consistent with all present experimental results. A modified born term model for π± Δ electroproduction

An electric Born type model is used to describeπ±Δ electroproduction at high energies. The electric pion form factor is taken from VDM; the contact term form factor and theΔ form factor are set equal to the proton form factor (or equal to zero) which is left as an arbitrary parameter, and is determined by a fit of the model to the recentπ+δ0 andπ−Δ++ electroproduction data.

Transverse momentum dependence ofηmeson suppression in Au+Au collisions atsNN=200GeV

New measurements by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider for. production at midrapidity as a function of transverse momentum ((PT)) and collision centrality in root s(NN) = 200 GeV Au + Au and p + p collisions are presented. They indicate nuclear modification factors (R-AA) which are similar in both magnitude and trend to those found in earlier pi(0) measurements. Linear fits to R-AA as a function of (PT) in 5-20 GeV/c show that the slope is consistent with zero within two standard deviations at all centralities, although a slow rise cannot be excluded. Constraints on Coupling Constants through Charged $\Sigma$ Photoproduction

The few available data for the reactions $\gamma p \rightarrow K^{0} \Sigma^{+}$ and $\gamma n \rightarrow K^{+} \Sigma^{-}$ are compared to models developed for the processes $\gamma p \rightarrow K^{+} \Sigma^{0}$ and $\gamma p \rightarrow K^{+} \Lambda$. It is found that some of these phenomenological models overpredict the measurements by up to a factor of 100. Fitting the data for all of these reactions leads to drastically reduced Born coupling constants.

Measurement of neutrino oscillation by the K2K experiment

We present measurements of nu_mu disappearance in K2K, the KEK to Kamioka long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. One hundred and twelve beam-originated neutrino events are observed in the fiducial volume of Super-Kamiokande with an expectation of 158.1^{+9.2}_{-8.6} events without oscillation. A distortion of the energy spectrum is also seen in 58 single-ring muon-like events with reconstructed energies. The probability that the observations are explained by the expectation for no neutrino oscillation is 0.0015% (4.3sigma). In a two flavor oscillation scenario, the allowed Delta m^2 region at sin^2(2theta) is between 1.9 and 3.5 x 10^{-3} eV^2 at the 90% C.L. with a best-fit value o…
