A magnetostrictive generator for sensors network
2017
In this paper we present a vibration harvesting electric power generator based on magnetostrictive effect for sensors network in hazardous area and we validate it experimentally. The generator has been designed by using Dynamic Preisach hysteresis Model (DPM). DPM is a development of classical Preisach Model which is able to include dynamical features in the mathematical model of hysteresis. We measure the output power capability of the generator and we estimate its power density generation capability.
Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators for Pico Hydropower Application: A Parametrical Study
2022
A pico hydropower plant is an energy harvesting system that allows energy production using the power of the water flowing in small watercourses, and in water distribution network. Axial Flow Flux Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (AFPMSG) are particularly suitable for this application, being efficient machines that achieve high power with small dimensions. This paper presents a parametrical study of several configurations and topologies of three-phase and single-phase AFPMSG, for pico hydropower application, to assess the most suitable dimensional characteristics for the most energy production using a safe voltage of 25 V. The AFPMSGs here considered has a simple single stator and roto…
A multi-input, single-inductor power system for multisource energy harvesting
2013
Today, energy harvesting is drawing a great deal of attention due to modern trends in energy saving and sustainable development purposes. Among renewable energy sources fuel cells and photovoltaic arrays are the most promising for a wide variety of applications, ranging from few mWatts of wireless sensor networks to kWatts for household appliances. Coupling several harvesters and renewable sources is the winning strategy to ensure a proper supply overcoming the uncertainty and limited availability of common harvesters and renewable sources. Multisource energy harvesting is actually an open research topic involving several pressing and often conflicting requirements. System cost, complexity,…
Speed detection of battery-free nodes based on RF Wireless Power Transfer
2020
In the Internet of Things (IoT) era, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are rapidly increasing in terms of relevance and pervasiveness thanks to their notable real-time monitoring performance across several fields, including industrial, domestic, military, biomedical, commercial, environmental, and other sectors. A highly attractive implementation of WSNs is asset tracking with accurate data regarding the location and transportation conditions of goods, equipment, and the like. One highly promising application of WSNs along these lines is the remote speed monitoring of goods, ideally with battery-free sensor nodes that do not require any maintenance. This, however, represents a major challenge…
Hybrid Energy Storage Modeling And Innovative Solutions For Energy Storage Management Systems
2022
Voltage source inverters: An easy approach for fast fault detection
2013
Fault-tolerant converters have been widely investigated for years and nowadays an extensive technical literature on this field exists. This paper presents a novel fault detection algorithm based on a simple geometrical approach. In the algorithm analysis both the case of faults in single device and the loss of an entire inverter leg have been considered. The proposed methodology is characterized by simplicity, low computational and implementation effort with a consequent fast execution and easy control integration. The suggested algorithm is verified by means of experimental tests and reveals a valid and suitable alternative to the existing state of the art in the field of inverter fault de…
Reliability Analysis of Three Homogeneous Fault-tolerant Inverter Topologies
2016
Abstract—In this article, non-redundant fault-tolerant inverter topologies are addressed. A novel fault-tolerant control strategy which enhances performances during post-fault operation is proposed. Benefits from the proposed strategy over conventional fault-tolerant topologies are investigated in terms of system reliability. Cost, post-fault performances, and system reliability of the proposed solution are compared with both a conventional triac-based fault-tolerant inverter and a T-type inverter. The reliability analysis of each selected configuration is carried out by means of Markov chains. The analysis is validated through a comparison of reliability and sensitivity curves. As shown by…
Protection of Trees against Lightning Strikes as a Measure to Prevent Fires and Loss of Human Life
2021
Lighting strikes have been the catalyst of massive uncontrolled fires in areas of combustible vegetation. In some regions, lightning strikes may be a relatively unusual occurrence (e.g., California), but instead they seem to have become a major contributor to the propagation of wildfires, as a byproduct of climate change. Given such unusual weather, wildfires originating from lightning are an increasing threat. In this paper, the authors discuss the withstand capability of trees against lightning and introduce a proactive approach to prevent wildfires by the deployment of tree lighting protection systems (TLPS) to protect forested areas, where deemed necessary by the tree risk assessment.

A Simulation Analysis for Assessing the Reliability of AC/DC Hybrid Microgrids - Part II: Port Area and Residential Area
2021
This paper reports the second part of a simulation study with the aim of evaluating the ability of two portions of a hybrid AC/DC MV/LV network in maintaining their operation in off-grid mode during the loss of the main AC grid due to a failure. In particular, this paper follows a dual purpose: first, it analysis two microgrids in a residential area and a port zone capability of operating in islanded mode, applying a probabilistic approach, while there is different energy use cases, and second is to evaluate some reliability indicators.
