Involvement of putative glutamate receptors in plant defence signaling and NO production

2011

International audience; Ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs) are non-selective cation channels permeable to calcium, present in animals and plants. In mammals, glutamate is a well-known neurotransmitter and recently has been recognized as an immunomodulator. As animals and plants share common mechanisms that govern innate immunity with calcium playing a key role in plant defence activation, we have checked the involvement of putative iGluRs in plant defence signaling. Using tobacco cells, we first provide evidence supporting the activity of iGluRs as calcium channels and their involvement in NO production as reported in animals. Thereafter, iGluRs were shown to be activated in response t…

Characterization of grapevine defense reactions and identification of elicitors : the endopolygalacturonase 1 from Botrytis cinerea, an avirulence fu…

2002

The fight against grapevine pathogens is mainly carried out by pesticides, the continued use of which is harmful to the environment and the health of users and consumers. The main organizations in charge of viticulture set as a priority the research and use of alternatives to chemical control. However, the genetic improvement of the vine is prohibited in AOC vineyards to preserve the varietal typicity, partly responsible for the quality of the wines. In addition, research undertaken some fifteen years ago reveals that plants have their own immune defenses, which they activate on contact with the microorganisms they recognize via molecules called elicitors. In this context, the objective of …

Impact of biostimulants on the resistance induction level of grapevine to downy mildew by elicitors

2018

The protection of vineyards against cryptogamic diseases such as downy mildew is mainly ensured by synthetic fungicides, which cause serious environmental and health problems. The induction of resistance by elicitors could allow to reduce their use. However, even if their efficacy is demonstrated in greenhouse conditions, it remains quite variable in field conditions. Indeed, the efficacy of an elicitor depends on the plant’s ability to respond, or more generally, on the latter’s physiological status. In this context, part of the FUI project IRIS+, the aim of this present work is to evaluate whether biostimulants, through their effect on the plant’s physiology, would be able to increase the…

Membrane dynamics of sugar transports in tobacco-microbe interactions

2017

SPEINRAUBIPM DOCT; Plants can influence microorganism population through exudation of sugars notably as carbon source. Indeed, the type of plant-microorganism interaction (PMI) is linked to the trophic exchanges between plant and microorganism. Microorganisms are thus able to “manipulate” the host to modify sugar fluxes. In mycorrhizal symbiosis, the plant has a supply of nutrients by the fungal partner, which in return receives sugars. In pathogenic relationship, the microorganism will divert sugars provided by the plant without compensation. Despite identification of sugar transporters at biotrophic interfaces, molecular and cellular mechanisms by which microorganisms operate the distribu…

Impact of stresses associated to climate changes on natural and induced grapevine resistance to pathogens

2013

France is a worldwide leader in grape production and has to face global changes including climate evolution and transitions towards sustainable systems of production. One major problem in viticulture is indeed the high susceptibility of most of the grown cultivars to cryptogamic diseases, such as downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola). Maintaining a satisfactory health status of grapevine currently requires numerous fungicide treatments. However, in an objective of sustainable viticulture, there is increasing societal request, winegrower awareness, and political incitation to reduce this use of pesticides. For these reasons, alternative strategies of protection are currently investigated at the…

Grapevine vocs emissions triggered by elicitation –assessment of two french vineyards

2022

International audience; Grapevine foliar volatile organic compounds (VOCs) releases are induced by elicitor applications.Their emissions have been followed along the growing season on two geographically separatedBurgundy and Bordeaux (Chardonnay and Cabernet franc cultivars, respectively) French vineyards. Inyear 2019, fortunately lacking of endogenous disease, VOCs were collected under non-destructivemode, in four hours with SBSE sensors entrapped into a confinement Teflon bag. Then the monitoringof VOCs enables to distinguish between weak (COS-OGA (Bastid©) and CuSO4) and strong elicitors(MeJA).Although monoterpene Ocimenes are constitutively present among the scent of the twovineyards, t…

Activation of Grapevine Defense Mechanisms: Theoretical and Applied Approaches

2011

part 4.; International audience; Grapevine, as other plants, possesses an innate immune system that usually prevents infection by pathogens. General elicitors are compounds of different biochemical families capable of inducing plant defense reactions. In grapevine, the cascade of defense events induced by elicitors has been studied among others in cell suspensions. The perception of the elicitor triggers signaling events that allow the activation of defense genes encoding PR proteins and other proteins involved in phytoalexin production and cell wall reinforcement. The grapevine phytoalexins resveratrol and derivated compounds have been largely studied. In addition to their antimicrobial ac…
