Bryophyte Species Richness on Retention Aspens Recovers in Time but Community Structure Does Not
2014
Green-tree retention is a forest management method in which some living trees are left on a logged area. The aim is to offer ‘lifeboats’ to support species immediately after logging and to provide microhabitats during and after forest re-establishment. Several studies have shown immediate decline in bryophyte diversity after retention logging and thus questioned the effectiveness of this method, but longer term studies are lacking. Here we studied the epiphytic bryophytes on European aspen (Populus tremula L.) retention trees along a 30-year chronosequence. We compared the bryophyte flora of 102 ‘retention aspens’ on 14 differently aged retention sites with 102 ‘conservation aspens’ on 14 d…

Indigenous language education in Russia: current issues and challenges
2021
Despite the high number of recognised Indigenous groups who are struggling to maintain their languages, cultures, and identities in Russia, there is little research done on the matters of cultural and linguistic revitalisation. This study sought to address this gap by exploring the views of two Indigenous groups, Karelian and Mari, on the development of their Indigenous languages and educational strategies to protect and revive their languages. The study relied on in-depth one-on-one interviews with 20 participants, ten from each Indigenous group. The findings show that despite older generations’ relative proficiency and interest in their respective Indigenous languages, motivation to maste…
Romanikielen elvyttäminen edellyttää uskoa demokratiaan
2020
Romanikieli on mainittu Unescon maailman uhanalaisten kielten luettelossa. Romanien lukumääräksi on maailmanlaajuisesti arvioitu noin 20 miljoonaa, joista romanikieltä puhuu noin 10 miljoonaa ihmistä. Operaatio romanikielen elvytys on Suomessa käynnistynyt. nonPeerReviewed

“I sámifize it...” : Preschool in the Centre of South Sámi Language and Culture Learning in Norway
2022
For an Indigenous population, there is a need for an inclusive educational space from the language and culture srevitalisation perspective. This is especially important during the early years when the basics of the language are formed alongside cultural knowledge. This paper takes a closer look at a South Sami preschool language learning environment through the lenses of teachers. The South Sami (South Saami) is the southernmost Sami population, frequently described as a minority within the minority. The estimation for South Sami speakers in Norway is around 300, making the language severely endangered This paper aims to take a closer look at how early childhood education teachers describe …

Building the Corpus of Finland-Swedish Sign Language : Acknowledging the Language History and Future Revitalization
2022
This paper presents the first steps in the process of creating a multimedia corpus for the severely endangered Finland-Swedish Sign Language (FinSSL). In the paper, we will first outline the history and current situation of FinSSL and then move on to describe some of the foundational choices which we have made both in the earlier data collection and at the start of the currently ongoing annotation work. Finally, we will bring up challenges related to the corpus data processing and discuss the future uses of the corpus, especially from the point of view of the FinSSL revitalization process. peerReviewed
”Paljon on tehty, mutta paljon on vielä kehitettävää” : saamen kielten etäyhteyksiä hyödyntävän opetuspilotin arviointi 2022
2023
Oppilaita on esikouluikäisistä lukiolaisiin. Oppilaiden määrä on kasvanut 50:stä 150:een etäopetuspilotin aikana. Arvioinnilla …
