How do people talk decades later about their crisis that we call psychosis? : A qualitative study of the personal meaning-making process

Psychosis refers to a severe mental state that often significantly affects the individual’s life course. However, it remains unclear how people with the lived experiences themselves view these phenomena, as part of their life story. In order to evaluate this personal meaning-making process, we conducted in-depth life-story interviews with 20 people who had been diagnosed with non-affective psychosis 10 to 23 years previously in one catchment area. 35% of them were still receiving mental health treatment, and 55% of them were diagnosed with schizophrenia. Illnesses caused by a variety of micro- and macro- organisms can negatively affect individuals’ fitness, leading to the expectation that immunity is under positive selection. However, immune responses are costly and individuals must trade-off their immune response with other fitness components (e.g. survival or reproductive success) meaning that individuals with intermediate response may have the greatest overall fitness. Major life changes may cause an autobiographical rupture and a need to work on one’s narrative identity. This article introduces a new qualitative interview methodology originally developed to facilitate 10 prostate cancer patients and five spouses in the (re)creation of their life narratives in the context of a series of interventive interviews conducted over a timespan of several months. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli tutkia eroavatko lukivaikeustaustaiset aikuiset verrokkiryhmästä elämänkulun suhteen ja onko tässä huomattavissa sukupuolieroja lukivaikeustaustaisten miesten ja verrokkimiesten sekä lukivaikeustaustaisten naisten ja verrokkinaisten kesken. The focus of this study was to examine the constructions of the educable subject of the lifelong learning (LLL) narrative in the narrative life histories of adult students at general upper secondary school for adults (GUSSA). In this study lifelong learning has been defined as a cultural narrative on education, “a system of political thinking” that is not internally consistent, but has contradictory themes embedded within it (Billig et al., 1988). Terveystieteiden lisensiaatti Sirkka-Liisa Palomäki tutkii väitöskirjassaan vanhuutta ja vanhenemista iäkkäiden naisten kerronnan kautta. Lisäksi hän tulkitsee, millainen kuva välittyy tämän sukupolven naisen elämästä ja oman aikamme vanhuudesta.
