Hypocalcemia is a common disorder in the elderly, affecting 10% of the elderly population as a whole, 18% of those in hospital and 36% of those in long-term care [1, 2]. Many conditions can lead to hypocalcemia in adults young and old, e.g. primary hypoparathyroidism, chronic renal failure, gastrointestinal diseases (such as celiac disease or Crohn’s disease), drugs (particularly diuretics, bisphosphonates and antiepileptics), acute pancreatitis and thyroid surgery. The case of a 54-year-old male with a compression fracture of the T 12 vertebral body and a bilateral anterior column fracture of the acetabulum is presented. The origin of this rare combination of fractures is explained by the action of the patient's own muscle force on bone of very poor quality. The treatment of these lesions is comparable to the treatment of similar fractures in bone of normal quality.

Total hip replacement is often recommended for the treatment of femoral neck fractures in elderly patients. A less invasive approach with shorter operating time is the replacement of the femoral head only, leaving the acetabular cartilage in situ. Hemiarthroplastic hip replacement using a metallic head prosthesis was not successful in the past, because the majority of patients developed protrusio acetabuli after surgery. We compared the proportion of patients with adverse events associated with gastrointestinal endoscopy identified with direct patient contact to the proportion identified through our current infrastructure using the chi-square statistic.
