The integrated school day: Improving the educational offering of schools in Finland

2012

The term Integrated School Day (ISD) refers to a school day in which extracurricular activities and children’s care are organized at the school before and after lessons, and sometimes between lessons. In a three year project, the extracurricular activities consisted of two types of activities for each child as selected by the parents and child: 1) adult-supervised, mostly self-organized recreation and indoor and outdoor activities in the morning before school hours and/or in the afternoon after school hours, and 2) hobby clubs available for children to attend a few times per week to enrich the activities offered in the morning and afternoon. Seven schools with students in grades 1 - 9 (from…

Burnout as an important factor in the psychophysiological responses to a work day in Teachers

2010

Burnout syndrome is an important psychosocial risk in the job context, especially in professions with a strong social interaction, as in the case of teaching. This study analyses the role of burnout in the psychophysiological responses to a work day in teachers. High burnout was related to worse mood, and higher perceived stress throughout the work day. Moreover, burnout is positively related to systolic blood pressure and negatively related to salivary cortisol levels at the beginning of the work day. Higher scores of burnout in teachers are also related to lower heart rate in the middle of the work day. The psychophysiological responses to a work day are specifically associated with the d…

Role Stress: Burnout Antecedent in Nursing Professionals

1993

Abstract Burnout syndrome has been described by different authors as a reaction to work stress. Hence both the role stress components–role ambiguity and role conflict–appear in the literature as burnout antecedent variables. The correlation between these variables is positive. On the other hand, the work social support (from supervisors and colleagues) is a variable with influence on both role stress and burnout, so the people who perceive higher work social support feel lower role stress and lower burnout than the people who perceive lower social support. In this study we present the results of a correlational study of role ambiguity, role conflict, burnout levels (tested with Maslach Burn…

"Me saatiin meidän laps takas" : äitien kokemuksia sairaalakoulujakson merkityksestä

2016

Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää, millainen merkitys sairaalaopetusinterventiolla oli ollut oppilaille äitien kokemusten mukaan. Tutkimus kartoittaa lisäksi, millaiset tapahtumat koulussa johtivat sairaalakoulujaksolle. Tutkimus toteutettiin laadullisena haastattelututkimuksena. Aineisto koostuu neljän sellaisen äidin syvähaastatteluista, joiden lapsi oli ollut sairaalakoulussa lukuvuonna 2013–2014 sosioemotionaalisten pulmien vuoksi. Aineisto analysoitiin käyttämällä aineistolähtöistä sisällönanalyysia. Tutkimus osoitti, että sairaalakoulujaksolle johtaneita tekijöitä lasten omissa kouluissa olivat tuen tarpeiden laiminlyönti ja pedagoginen tahdittomuus, lasta huomioimaton vuo…

The utility function and the emotional well-being function

2004

Behind the utility function, which is the basis for economic and finance theory, is a philosophical and ethical approach based essentially on the Utilitarian and Hedonistic schools. Once qualitative, the utility function’s approach shifted to a quantitative one based on the work of the mathematician, D. Bernoulli. This quantitative approach is normative and based on a maximizing agent. In this paper, the “emotional well-being” function is developed which mixes the ethics of a rational economic individual with those of a more complete individual who is simultaneously conditioned by economic, instinctive, social, religious, ethical, and esthetic values. This new utility function of emotional …

Time Unification on Local Binary Patterns Three Orthogonal Planes for Facial Expression Recognition

2019

International audience; Machine learning has known a tremendous growth within the last years, and lately, thanks to that, some computer vision algorithms started to access what is difficult or even impossible to perceive by the human eye. While deep learning based computer vision algorithms have made themselves more and more present in the recent years, more classical feature extraction methods, such as the ones based on Local Binary Patterns (LBP), still present a non negligible interest, especially when dealing with small datasets. Furthermore, this operator has proven to be quite useful for facial emotions and human gestures recognition in general. Micro-Expression (ME) classification is…

The impacts of legitimacy appraisal of defeat on supporters’ identity management strategies: Testing the role of emotions

2022

Emotion is a central feature of many competitive sports. In this regard, re- search revealed that defeats have powerful impacts on athletes who can feel deep- ly distressed or annoyed. Comparatively, relatively few studies have directly ad- dressed the emotional experience of supporters associated with losing teams. This is surprising when taking into account the negative consequences of emotions on intergroup relations (i.e., fans riots). To fill this gap, it is crucial to identify to whom these emotions are addressed. In this study, we proposed that the ob- ject of specific emotions would trigger the use of specific identity management strategies depending on the legitimacy appraisal of t…

Cross-Subject Emotion Recognition Using Fused Entropy Features of EEG.

2022

Emotion recognition based on electroencephalography (EEG) has attracted high interest in fields such as health care, user experience evaluation, and human–computer interaction (HCI), as it plays an important role in human daily life. Although various approaches have been proposed to detect emotion states in previous studies, there is still a need to further study the dynamic changes of EEG in different emotions to detect emotion states accurately. Entropy-based features have been proved to be effective in mining the complexity information in EEG in many areas. However, different entropy features vary in revealing the implicit information of EEG. To improve system reliability, in this paper,…

Vanhuusiän yksinäisyys : seuruututkimus emotionaalista ja sosiaalista yksinäisyyttä määrittävistä tekijöistä

2006

The first purpose of this study was to examine perceived loneliness among elderly persons aged 80 at the baseline and stability and changes in loneliness over a 5-year follow-up. In addition, the extent to which different factors are associated with and predict loneliness was explored. The second purpose was to study the structure and stability and the predictors of perceived togetherness in men and women over the 5-year period. The overall aim was to identify the determinants of loneliness in old age. The target population of this study comprised all persons born in 1910 and 1914 and living in Jyväskylä. At age 80, 91.1 % (n = 512) of those eligible participated in the home-interviews and …

Structural factors in preschool children's emotional expression in music

2011

Recent studies have substantiated that preschool children are able to perceive the emotional meaning in music. However, to date, research has not paid enough attention to children’s emotional expression in music. The current study investigated 3- (N=18) and 5- (N=19) year-old children’s ability to express emotion with music by manipulating musical factors (pitch, loudness and tempo) to indicate one of three basic emotions (happiness, sadness or angriness). In order to facilitate the recognition of emotions three images of faces were presented representing target emotions. Three musical pieces differing in terms of emotional quality were presented in random order and participants were asked …
