Notwithstanding his well known behaviorism, Quine connects language learning to the ability of understanding others by means of empathy, namely perceiving what an other is perceiving. The paper discusses and resolves the prima facie oddity between this thesis and Quine's criticism of propositional attitudes. It analyzes the notion of empathy and the cognitive mechanism underlying it. It explains also the role of empathy and of mindreading abilities in language learning and understanding others. Tutkin suomalaisten mielisairaalamuistoja Muistoihin kaivertuneet tilat ‐hankkeessa. Muistelukeruuseen lähetetyt potilaiden muistot ovat suurelta osin häpeän ja traumantäyteisiä, vaikka positiivisiakin kokemuksia mahtuu joukkoon. Luovien terapioiden kannalta ilahduttavaa on se, että niiden osalta kenelläkään muistojaan lähettäneellä potilaalla ei ollut pahaa sanottavaa. Luovia terapioita olen käyttänyt myös muisteluaineiston hyödyntämisessä. Emotional modulation of the attentional blink and the relation to interpersonal reactivity

The extent of the attentional blink effect on detection rates in rapid serial visual presentations is modulated by the emotionality of the stimuli. Emotionally salient stimuli are detected more often, even if presented in the attentional blink period, and elicit an enlarged P3 response, which has been interpreted as enhanced consolidation. This effect correlates with individual differences in trait affectivity such as anxiety or dysphoria. Purpose This research paper aims to discover the elements of good physician leadership as perceived by physicians and to find out how the findings connect to the leadership theory. Design/methodology/approach The subjects (n = 50) of this qualitative study are physicians from four hierarchical levels (residents/specialising physicians, specialists, heads of departments and chief physicians). Empathy in Technology Design and Graffiti

This paper discusses empathic understanding, what it means, and how it can be acquired. After an overview of some theories and models from the existing literature, two experiments are presented, where participants were assessing graffiti works. From the results of these experiments, it can be concluded that empathic understanding involves both embodied processes and abstract inferences. Furthermore, understanding can be based on perceived, mechanistic bodily similarities and movements or on folk-psychological inferences mentalized between the observer/empathizer and an object/empathized.
