This paper discusses empathic understanding, what it means, and how it can be acquired. After an overview of some theories and models from the existing literature, two experiments are presented, where participants were assessing graffiti works. From the results of these experiments, it can be concluded that empathic understanding involves both embodied processes and abstract inferences. Furthermore, understanding can be based on perceived, mechanistic bodily similarities and movements or on folk-psychological inferences mentalized between the observer/empathizer and an object/empathized. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin luokanopettajien itsearvioinneissaan ilmaisemaa empaattisuuden tasoa ja sitä, eroavatko naiset ja miehet toisistaan empatian suhteen. Lisäksi tutkittiin opettajien työssään kokemaa myötätuntouupumusta, joka tässä tutkimuksessa koostuu työuupumuksesta ja sekundaarista traumaattisesta stressistä, sekä myötätuntotyytyväisyyttä. Music listening is a great resource for mental well-being, pleasure, and self-regulation, but it may also be maladaptive. Depression, for instance, has been shown to relate to music use that is characterized by rumination, avoidance, and mood worsening. However, we know little of the role of individual differences in such maladaptive music use. Hence, this study focused on examining the role of personality, empathic traits, emotional contagion, and the types of musical reward as predictors of maladaptive music listening. Music preference has been related to individual differences like social identity, cognitive style, and personality, but quantifying music preference can be a challenge. Self-report measures may be too presumptive of shared genre definitions between listeners, while listener ratings of expert-selected music may fail to reflect typical listeners’ genre boundaries.
