Numerical experiments with a parallel fast direct elliptic solver on Cray T3E
1997
A parallel fast direct O(N log N) solver is shortly described for linear systems with separable block tridiagonal matrices. A good parallel scalability of the proposed method is demonstrated on a Cray T3E parallel computer using MPI in communication. Also, the sequential performance is compared with the well-known BLKTRI-implementation of the generalized. cyclic reduction method using a single processor of Cray T3E.
Performing transnational family with the affordances of mobile apps : a case study of Polish mothers living in Finland
2020
Affordances provided by digital technologies and mobile apps (WhatsApp, Skype, Messenger) help in maintaining familyhood. These mobile apps enable the creation of in-app family groups. They also afford image sharing, which is used for phatic purposes. Digital connectivity provides the illusions of togetherness and belonging, and allows for performing family in a transnational context (emotional transnationalism). However, it also generates the feelings of guilt through infrequent communication. In the auto-driven visual elicitation interviews, the study looks at family constellations and technologically mediated communication from the perspective of five Polish mothers living in Finland. Ap…
A battery and network usage model for smartphones
2012
Masteroppgave i informasjons- og kommunikasjonsteknologi IKT590 2012 – Universitetet i Agder, Grimstad Smartphones have emerged into platforms with powerful computational capabilities that generate large amount of data. Smartphones have become an important part of our daily life and we use smartphones more frequently than we used desktop computers to stay connected on internet, reading news, playing games, browsing, watching video and staying connected with friends through social networking websites like Facebook and Tweeter. On the other hand the smartphones have a strict energy budget and limited lifetime on a single charge. Thus it very important, for manufacturers and users, that smart …
The Effects of Banning Smartphone Use During Lectures in High Schools : An explanatory case study
2021
Master's thesis in Information systems (IS501) Research context–During the last decade, smartphonehas become an integral part of our lives. It is undeniable that the smartphone has impacted almost every aspect of our lives, and education is no exception. Banning smartphone use is one of the measures that has been implemented in high school to manage excessive smartphone use among students. Developing an appropriate policy to manage smartphone use during lectures can be a difficult task, because it can have a positive impact on their attention and academic performance, while also having a negative impact on their behavior and mentality. Purpose-This study addresses the issue regarding smartp…
The Impact of Smart City Initiatives on Human Rights
2020
Abstract: A smart city is a phenomenon where municipalities engage with stakeholders to use ICT for increasing efficiency, sustainability, and quality of life for its citizens and city operations. However, smart city initiatives can at times challenge human rights. While particular human rights such as privacy have been subject to analysis in the digital government field, a complete view on human rights in smart cities has so far been missing in our discipline. It is mainly studies from other disciplines that voice comprehensive concerns about potentially negative impacts of smart cities on human rights. However, they often lack the technological background. This paper reports on a pilot st…
Naturalistic driving study on the usage of smart phone applications while driving
2017
We present the first results from a study that tracked how Finnish drivers use their smart phones while driving. We monitored 30 heavy-user drivers in Finland in June-September 2016, and recorded the times when they used their phones, the application used at the time of touch, and the location and speed of the car. Touches were used as a proxy for estimating visual distraction due to visual-manual tasks. Our data set allows us to determine whether drivers use their phones differently on different road types (highway, main road, local rural road, urban road). We found that the road type has very little effect on phone use. The drivers produced more touches per hour on urban roads but the ins…
