Social Computing: A Classification of Existing Paradigms

In less than three decades, several paradigms of social computing have emerged. Among them, groupware, social software and mobile social software (MoSoSo) are the most widely known. Although all significant, it is challenging to recognize the function and unique features of each single paradigm. This situation represents an obstacle for a coherent development of social computing, a research domain that is highly fragmented and with relevant literature spread across several disciplines. In this paper, a classification of existing social computing paradigms is introduced as an initial effort to combine the lines of discourse concerning social computing.

Patent infringement detection usually implies research among documents in different forms, in both natural and unstructured language, often involving a lot of human resources and time. In order to ease this patent check process, we previously presented a visual tool to be used by designers themselves at any stage of the design process, providing them with useful and reliable information for deciding whether to steer their design away from potential patent infringements. On the design of pervasive computing applications based on Bluetooth and a P2P concept

As an example of implementing the pervasive computing, we developed an application framework to deploy an easy, spontaneous, and infrastructureless network. We selected the Bluetooth technology with the peer-to-peer (P2P) concept to develop an experimental application which enables peers to exchange their resources. Overall network architecture and the prototype application are presented. We selected a small test-bed and simulation to evaluate the overall performance and system behaviour. We measured and present our findings in term of the duration of inquiry procedure and the throughput, according to various experimental parameters such as physical distance between nodes and their speeds.
