Influence of Drawing on the Antimicrobial and Physical Properties of Chlorhexidine-Compounded Poly(caprolactone) Monofilaments

2015

In this work, we prepared poly(caprolactone) (PCL) monofilaments incorporating different amounts of the antiseptic chlorhexidine diacetate (CHX) and evaluated the effect of “online” drawing during the melt spinning or of an “offline” cold drawing on the antimicrobial and physical properties of PCL/CHX monofilaments. The results showed that the drawing conditions strongly affected the properties of the threads. In particular, the filaments exhibited antimicrobial activity for all the draw ratios (DR) adopted, but on increasing DR the antibacterial efficiency reduced. These results were correlated with the CHX surface concentration and with the release kinetics.

Investigation of absorber and heterojunction in the pure sulphide kesterite

2021

This paper aims to study the properties of the absorber layer and the heterojunction in kesterite solar cells. The Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) thin films were layered on a glass substrate from a colloidal solution of metal salts and thiourea dissolved in a mixture of water and ethanol and deposited by spin coating technique. The samples were then heat treated in a furnace, in the presence of sulphur powder and under a nitrogen gas flow. The results revealed the formation of homogeneous layers of a pure kesterite phase of CZTS crystallites after heat treatment with correct stoichiometry and oxidation states. The optical transmission measurements indicate an energy band-gap of 1.4 eV and an absorption c…

Effect of finishing and polishing systems on the surface roughness and color change of composite resins

2020

Background This study is to examine the surface roughness and color changes occurring on composite resins following the application of different finishing and polishing systems. Material and Methods In our study, a total of 200 samples were prepared from composites resin (6×2 mm) containing supra-nano, submicron hybrid, nanohybrid, nano-ceramic and microhybrid filler. They were polished with diamond, aluminum oxide, silicon carbide finishing and polishing systems. The initial color values of composite samples were measured with a spectrophotometer and surface roughness values with a profilometer. After that, samples were immersed of coffee solution and color measurements were repeated on th…

Spin polarized tunneling at room temperature in a Heusler compound-a non-oxide material with a large negative magnetoresistance effect in low magneti…

2003

Summary form only given. Materials which display large changes in resistivity in response to an applied magnetic field (magnetoresistance) are currently of great interest due to their potential for applications in magnetic sensors, magnetic random access memories, and spintronics-a new kind of electronics based on spin instead of charge. Although ferromagnetic manganites show colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effects around their Curie temperature, the low field and nearly temperature independent magnetoresistance properties important for spintronics are found only at low temperatures. Guided by striking features in the electronic structure of several magnetic compounds, we prepared the Heus…

Masonry columns confined with fabric reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) systems: A round robin test

2021

Abstract The conservation and the preservation of existing masonry buildings, most of them recognized as cultural heritage, require retrofitting techniques that should reduce the invasiveness and assure reversibility and compatibility with the substrate. In this perspective, the strengthening system should be able to improve the bearing capacity of the structural member and, at the same time, to assure mechanical and material compatibility. The use of Fabric Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) composites is now recognized to be suitable for these purposes. Indeed, the inorganic matrix has comparable properties with respect to the existing historical mortars while the fabric has relevant t…

Microstructural, mechanical and tribological properties of suspension plasma sprayed YSZ/h-BN composite coating

2018

Abstract Brittleness, relative high friction coefficient and wear rate limit the applications of ceramic coatings as wear-resistant layers. However, because embedding additives with ceramic matrix has demonstrated to be an effective way to improve coating performances, different contents and size of h-BN were added into an YSZ suspension. Afterwards, the YSZ/h-BN composite coatings were manufactured by suspension plasma spray and their tribological analysis indicated that: i) the reduction of the friction coefficient and wear rate can be achieved by incorporating h-BN into YSZ coating. ii) finer h-BN particle is more helpful to enhance the tribological properties of the coating. iii) the op…

STRUCTURAL FEATURES AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF PLLA/PEARL POWDER SCAFFOLDS

2013

In order to improve the mechanical properties of scaffolds for bone tissue engineering, the present study aims to bring calcium carbonate (CaCO3) with signaling molecules, namely pearl powder, into poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA). PLLA/aragonite and PLLA/vaterite scaffolds were successfully fabricated by the freeze-drying method. Both composite scaffolds had a similar porous structure but a different saturated content of pearl powders. For both scaffolds, the porosity decreases and yield strength increases as pearl powder content increases. Introducing pearl powders into PLLA can improve the mechanical properties of the scaffolds. The porous structure plays a crucial role in the yield strength …

Studies of Mechanical Treatment on Surface Charge of Bioactive Composites

2008

Composite materials containing a bioactive phase (sol-gel-derived bioglass) and a mechanical strength phase (aluminum oxide-porous corundum) are promising materials for repair of living tissues. The influence of mechanical treatment of composite structure containing sintered corundum and CaOSiO2-P2O5 glass system was examined by exoelectron emission and electrokinetic’s potential method. The microstructure of the biocomposite material, its mechanical properties and the processing techniques used are all very strongly interrelated.. The charge layer generated on the surface of the composite biomaterials upon deformation and the type of the electrical charge in implants plays significant role…

Synthesis of nanostructured amorphous carbon-copper composite films by plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition

2016

Abstract Nanostructured amorphous carbon-copper composite films were formed by plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition. The formation was done on copper-silicon substrates at 25 °C, 300 °C, 520 °C, and 700 °C temperatures using an acetylene gas at 40–70 Pa pressure. The heating of the Cu Si substrate induced formation of Cu nanospheres with 50–500 nm size depending on the substrate temperature. The microstructure and composition of nanostructured carbon-copper composite films were investigated. The SEM views showed formation of amorphous carbon films with the randomly distributed nanostructures. The oxygen concentration in the composite films decreased with the increased heating temperat…

Functional characterisation of powders consisting of mixtures of glyceryl behenate and a non-ionic surfactant applied by hot-melt coating: lubricant …

2013

Solid-phase lubricants are routinely used in tablet manufacturing to reduce friction during the densification and ejection phases. However, two main challenges are commonly observed: a) poor blending of the lubricant with the other components; b) increased hydrophobicity of the mix. Hot-melt coating, wherein the substrate is coated with a composite lubricant consisting of glyceryl behenate and a non-ionic surfactant (polyethylene glycol behenate), offers a solution to these challenges. Comparative studies were undertaken using the composite lubricant in a hot-melt coating process and in a ‘standard’ physical blending method. This study shows that the addition of a surfactant to glyceryl beh…
