A wide analytical study of South African chromite ore, material with high interest in ceramic industry, has been carried out. With this purpose, an accurate chemical identification and mineralogical characterization of the mineral and the gangue have been performed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), voltammetry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), light microscopy (LM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDX). The elemental composition of the sample (ore and gangue) has been obtained by XRF. The voltammetric analysis has allowed to demonstrate that iron in the sample was as Fe(II). Influence of pH and temperature on the early stage of mica alteration

Mineral dissolution and precipitation reactions actively participate in controlling fluid chemistry during water–rock interaction. In this study, the changes in the biotite and muscovite basal surface nano-morphology were evaluated during interaction with fluids of different pH (pH = 1.1, 3.3 and 5.7) at different temperatures (T =2 5, 120, and 200 C). Results show that at the nanometre scale resolution of the atomic force microscope (AFM), dissolution generates etch pits with a stair-shaped pattern over the (0 0 1) surface. The a-x relations recently presented in White et al. (, Journal of Metamorphic Geology, 32, 261-286) are extended to include MnO. This provides a set of internally consistent a-x relations for metapelitic rocks in the MnO-Na2O-CaO-K2O-FeO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O-TiO2-O2 (MnNCKFMASHTO) system. The mixing parameters for the Mn-bearing minerals were estimated using the micro-ϕ{symbol} approach of Powell et al. (, Journal of Metamorphic Geology, 32, 245-260). Abstract The concentrations of minerals and trace elements in the Lokpanta oil shale from the Lower Benue Trough, Nigeria have been determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), respectively. X-ray diffraction data were evaluated using the SIROQUANT™ interactive data processing system based on Rietveld interpretation methods. A variety of pre-Variscan granitoids and two Variscan monzogranites occurring in the central and western parts of the Lusatian Granodiorite Complex (LGC), Saxonia were dated by the single zircon evaporation method, complemented by whole rock Nd isotopic data and Rb —Sr whole rock and mineral ages. The virtually undeformed pre-Variscan granitoids constitute a genetically related, mostly peraluminous magmatic suite, ranging in composition from two-mica granodiorite, muscovite-bearing biotite quartz diorite (tonalite) and granodiorite to biotite granodiorite and monozogranite.

In the middle part of the Cevennes, situated at the south-eastern border of the Massif Central, there are outcrops of micaschists, gneisses and granites in which the increase of metamorphic grade was investigated along the river Beaume. This paper presents the results of the petrographic-geochemical analysis of the micaschists of the greenschist facies. Chemical analyses of the micaschist-samples examined petrographically show their nearly constant composition, a fact which e.g., is expressed by similar CaO/Na2O- and MgO/FeO-proportions. Cordierite-orthoamphibole gneisses and rocks of similar composition commonly contain low-variance mineral assemblages that can provide useful information about the metamorphic evolution of a terrane. New calculated petrogenetic grids and pseudosections are presented in the FeO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O (FMASH), Na2O-CaO-K2O-FeO-MgO-Al2 O3- SiO2-H2O (NCKFMASH) and Na2O-CaO-K2O-FeO-MgO-Al2O3- SiO2-H2O-TiO2-Fe2 O3 (NCKFMASHTO) chemical systems to investigate quantitatively the phase relations in these rocks. New activity–composition (a–x) relations for minerals commonly occurring in metapelites are presented for use with the internally consistent thermodynamic dataset of Holland & Powell (2011, Journal of Metamorphic Geology, 29, 333–383). The a–x relations include a broader consideration of Fe2O3 in minerals, changes to the formalism of several phases and order–disorder in all ferromagnesian minerals where Fe–Mg mixing occurs on multiple sites. Using calculated chemical potential relationships to account for replacement of kyanite by symplectite in high pressure granulites

Calculated mineral equilibria are used to account for the formation of sapphirine-plagioclase, spinel-plagioclase and corundum-plagioclase symplectites replacing kyanite in quartz-plagioclase-garnet-kyanite granulite facies gneisses from the Southern Domain of the Athabasca granulite terrane, a segment of the Snowbird tectonic zone in northern Saskatchewan, Canada. Metamorphic conditions of >14 kbar and 800 °C are established for the high pressure, garnet-kyanite assemblage using constraints from P-T pseudosections and Zr-in-rutile thermometry. Spectroscopic 2D-tomography: Residual pressure and strain around mineral inclusions in diamonds

We have studied high-pressure inclusions (Ca-silicates, coesite, graphite) in three large diamonds, one from the Kankan district, Guinea, and the other two from the Panda kimberlite, Ekati diamond mines, Canada. Using the in situ point-by-point mapping technique with a confocal Raman system, the mineralogy of the inclusions, as well as their area distribution pattern ( e.g. , of different Ca-silicate phases) and their order-disorder distribution pattern (shown for graphite/disordered carbon), were determined.
