Earth Bricks with Halloysite Nanoclay: Research and Experimentation for the Sustainability of Materials

2021

This paper illustrates the experimentation activities on rammed earth and nanotechnologies. The experimental research was carried out with the aim of improving the performance of rammed earth bricks with clay nanotubes, creating a ‘new material’ with reduced embodied energy and low CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. Specifically, the analysed performances are related to the compressive strength that expand their area of use as a building material.

Novel core–shell (TiO2@Silica) nanoparticles for scattering medium in a random laser: higher efficiency, lower laser threshold and lower photodegrada…

2013

There has been growing interest in scattering media in recent years, due to their potential applications as solar collectors, photocatalyzers, random lasers and other novel optical devices. Here, we have introduced a novel core-shell scattering medium for a random laser composed of TiO2@Silica nanoparticles. Higher efficiency, lower laser threshold and long photobleaching lifetime in random lasers were demonstrated. This has introduced a new method or parameter (fraction of absorbed pumping), which opens a new avenue to characterize and study the scattering media. Optical chemical and colloidal stabilities were combined by coating a suitable silica shell onto TiO2 nanoparticles.

Low-pressure synthesis and Bridgman growth of Hg1−xMnxTe

1999

To reduce Hg high pressure related to the high-temperature synthesis reaction between the components in elemental form, Hg 1-x Mn x Te bulk crystals were produced by a two-step procedure including (I) the alloy synthesis using HgTe crystals grown by the cold travelling heater method and elemental Mn and Te to complete the desired composition, followed by (II) the Bridgman growth. The growth was carried out at temperature in the range of 700-850°C and rate of 1 mm/h. The Hg 1-x Mn x Te crystals have been characterised by X-ray diffractometry, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy and Hall effect techniques. Although the distribution coefficient of Mn was…

Analysis of small-angle scattering patterns from a commercial Al-Li alloy by means of a model incorporating a repulsive step potential

1992

Abstract Small-angle X-ray scattering measurements are reported for a commercial Al-8·49%Li-51% Cu (atomic composition) alloy solution treated at 520°C and thermally aged for several times at several temperatures. Data have been analysed by means of a model of ellipsoidal precipitate particles previously proposed by some of us and by a modification of this model where, in the interparticle interference term, allowance is made for interactions between the precipitate particles at longer range than previously. This was achieved by the introduction, in addition to the hard-sphere interaction potential, of a potential step. Our fits indicate that the precipitate particles interact through a rep…

Growth of zircon and titanite during metamorphism in the granitoid-gneiss terrane south of the Barberton greenstone belt, South Africa

2005

AbstractSHRIMP U-Pb zircon and titanite dating have been used to constrain the timing of mid- to lower- crustal metamorphism (∼650—700°C and 8—11 kbar) and syn-kinematic melting in the granitoid gneiss- dominated terrane south of the Barberton greenstone belt, South Africa. This study is concentrated on a clastic metasedimentary unit exposed in one of several greenstone remnants and a late-kinematic trondhjemite intrusive into spatially associated mixed gneisses. Locally, the clastic metasediments show extensive replacement of garnet and plagioclase by epidote and titanite. The titanites yield an upper intercept date of 3229±9 Ma, and provide a minimum age for the peak of metamorphism. Zirc…

Local disequilibrium of plagioclase in high-temperature shear zones of the Ivrea Zone, Italy

1995

Microstructural and chemical analysis of plagioclase in 20 superficially similar amphibolite facies ductile shear zones in metagabbors and amphibolites of the Ivrea Zone in Italy reveals significant differences in An and Ba contents. Plagioclase, which was deformed at P-T conditions lower than those of the wall rocks, occurs in the following four different microstructural situations with different chemical compositions: (i) relatively undeformed porphyroclasts, (ii) dynamically recrystallized grains and subgrains rimming the porphyroclasts, (iii) infill of microcracks cross-cutting the porphyroclasts and (iv) fine-grained recrystallized grains in the matrix of the shear zones. The differenc…

Chemical variations in clay minerals of the Archaean Barberton Greenstone Belt (South Africa)

1996

Abstract Four rock profiles of shales, carbonates and greywacke-type sediments were sampled from the mafic compositional influenced sedimentary Fig Tree Group and from overlying, more felsic related, sedimentary Moodies Group of the Archaean Barberton Greenstone Belt in South Africa. Clay separates of forty sedimentary rocks were examined by XRD and SEM to study the mineralogical, chemical and morphological variations of the constitutive illite and chlorite. The clay minerals showed a significant K-enrichment in the illites and Mg- and Fe-depletions in the chlorites upwards the stratigraphic sequence. Three independent parameters influenced these variations: (1) a change in the origin of th…

Raman spectroscopic data were obtained for (Mg,Fe)2SiO4 samples during compression to 57 GPa. Single crystals of San Carlos olivine compressed hydrostatically above 41 GPa showed appearance of a new “defect” peak in the 820–840 cm−1 region associated with SiOSi linkages appearing between adjacent Embedded Image tetrahedra to result in five- or sixfold-coordinated silicate species. Appearance of this feature is accompanied by a broad amorphous background. The changes occur at lower pressure than metastable crystalline transitions of end-member Mg2SiO4 forsterite (Fo-I) into Fo-II and Fo-III phases described recently. We complemented our experimental study using density functional theory (DFT…
